Georgia Speech Pathology State License Guide

A speech pathology state license in Georgia requires candidates to have a master’s degree. They will also need to follow the guidelines from the Georgia Board of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology. 1

Summary of Georgia Speech Pathology State License Requirements

Georgia speech pathology licensure requires a master’s in speech pathology or its equivalent. Candidates must also complete clinical observation hours, complete a professional experience and pass a national exam. A Georgia speech pathology license now has a 20% increase in demand with licensees working in schools as well as health care facilities. 2

Speech Pathology Initial Licensure for Georgia

According to ASHA 1 , qualifying for Georgia speech pathology licensure requires candidates meet certain criteria. For speech pathology license verification, candidates must:

• Obtain a speech pathology master’s or higher degree from an accredited program. The program should incorporate the 75 credit hours of classwork with 36 hours earned at the graduate level. 1
• Complete a supervised clinical practicum in a variety of areas working with adults and children with any communication disorder. The experience must be with an accredited program and amount to 375 clock hours of direct supervision and 25 clock hours of observation. At least 325 of the 400 hours must be completed at the graduate level. 1
• Complete a required nine-month professional experience in a part-time or full-time setting. 1
• Pass a national examination approved by the Board. 1
• Show continuation of study via two CEUs within two years preceding application. 1

Speech Language Pathology Licensure Exemptions for Georgia

The following individuals are exempt from Georgia speech language pathology licensure: certified SLPs who are employees of an educational institution as well as students, interns and clinical fellows. 1

Reciprocity for Speech Therapists in Georgia

Applicants seeking Georgia speech pathology licensure who are licensed in another state may be verified if their state criteria is equivalent.  SLP applicants who hold a CCC , or a  Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association , may also receive a Georgia speech pathology license. 1

Interim Practice for Aspiring Speech Pathologists in Georgia

An interim license is required for the paid clinical experience/required professional experience fellowship. The supervisors must hold a speech pathology license in Georgia and may supervise only two fellows at a time. The license is valid for one year and may be renewed once. 1

Continuing Education for Speech Language Pathologists in Georgia

Maintaining your Georgia license requires completion of continuing education hours; 20 clock hours or 2.0 CEUs are required per biennium. A dual license holder must complete 2.0 CEUs per biennium in each field to maintain their Georgia license. 1

Are you an analytical but creative thinker? Do you have great communication and problem-solving skills? Has speech pathology always been an area of interest to you? If you’ve answered yes to these questions, then you should consider becoming a licensed speech language pathologist (SLP) in Georgia.

SLP’s make a significant impact in the lives of their patients as they compassionately work to help clients with communicative disorders. Communication is vital to our interaction with fellow human beings, and when it’s ineffective we can be left feeling frustrated. Social, work, and family lives can become difficult overtime for those with communication disabilities.

Fortunately, a qualified and experienced SLP can drastically improve a patient’s quality of life. SLPs identify and diagnose speech and language disorders and develop individualized treatment plans. They can work with individuals of all ages from infants to older adults, or they can choose to work with a special population, specific disorder, or a combination of both.

You’ll also find SLPs in a variety of work settings including schools, hospitals, residential care facilities, and more. The profession is dynamic and fast-paced oftentimes with no two days being the same. Once you are licensed you can even choose to go into occupational therapy or become an interpreter or translator.

The Peach State is a wonderful place to begin your career as an SLP. The in-state universities offer highly ranked SLP programs, as well as top-notch facilities where you’ll gain clinical experience. If you already live in Georgia or plan or moving to the area soon, keep reading to find out the steps you need to take to become a licensed SLP.

Georgia Speech-Language Pathologist Licensure Process

The Georgia State Board of Speech Language Pathology/Audiology grants licensure for speech-language pathologists (SLPs) within the state. One of the rules and regulations set by the Board is that these licenses are to be renewed biennially.

SLPs need at least a master’s degree from an accredited speech-language pathology program to qualify for licensure. Before entering the master’s level program, you should have taken foundational courses during your undergraduate experience if your bachelor’s degree is in Communicative Sciences and Disorders.

If your degree is in another discipline, you’ll need to take the foundational courses before applying to an SLP program in order to meet the prerequisite requirements. Once in the program you will cover the following subjects:

• Language Disorders
• Swallowing Disorders
• Motor Speech Disorders
• Communication Neuroscience
• Clinical Practice
• Medical and Clinical Internships

The program should be accredited by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s (ASHA’s) accrediting organization, the Council of Academic Accreditation (CAA). This will ensure the education you receive meets the standards set forth by ASHA, the national scientific and credentialing agency for SLPs. Here you will find listed all Georgia speech pathology degree programs .

During your graduate program you’ll gain 300 hours of hands-on experience at clinical sites via practicums. If you earned a bachelor’s degree in Communicative Sciences and Disorders, you would enter the master’s program having already completed some practicum hours.

However, if you majored in another field, you’ll need to complete all 300 hours while in the graduate program. The time is broken down as follows:

• At least 25 hours spent with adults (18 years old and up)
• At least 25 hours spent with children under (under the age of 18)

After the clinical practicum is over and you’ve graduated, a Paid Clinical Experience ( PCE ) is the next step to licensure. The experience is nine months of full-time clinical experience. To be considered full-time you must work a minimum of 30 hours each week. You’ll have up to 24 months to finish after submitting the application.

The half-time experience is at least 15 hours weekly to be completed in 18 months, but you are given 36 months to from the initial application date to finish.

During the PCE your performance is monitored by a licensed SLP supervisor. They will observe, evaluate, write reports, and discuss your clinical work on a regular and structured basis. Fourteen calendar days after the completion of the PCE you and the supervisor must notify the Board by sending the appropriate notarized form .

To meet the testing requirement for licensure you will have to pass Praxis Exam 5331 for Speech-Language Pathology. The test is made up of 132 multiple-choice questions and graded on a scale of 100-200. A score of 162 is needed to pass.

The test is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) on behalf of ASHA. The exam assesses your knowledge and skills to ensure you are ready for active practice. Registration can be completed one of three ways: by phone, by mail, and online . Online registration is recommended for an easy and quick turnaround time.

Call (800) 772-9476 to register to take the test at a U.S. test center. There is a $35 surcharge that must be paid at least four days before your scheduled test date. When mailing the registration first fill out the Test Authorization Voucher Request Form and send it to ETS:

A voucher number will then be sent three weeks later with registration instructions.

Should you need to reschedule after registering you can do so through your Praxis account or by calling ETS Customer Service at least three days before the test. Cancelling within that timeframe may make you eligible for 50% of your test fees. The remaining payment is kept to cover processing expenses and for holding your space at the test center.

If you don’t cancel using the above steps and cannot take the test due to an absence or lateness, you are not eligible for a refund. To retake the test, you will have to pay the standard exam fee of $146 fee again. You will have to wait 28 days from the last date before you can reschedule.

Because this is a computer-based test you also have the option of taking it at home. You’ll be monitored by a live proctor for the duration of the exam. Be sure your equipment and environment meet the requirements outlined by the exam administrators.

Your score is sent to your Praxis account and any institutions you requested receive the information during the registration process, bringing you one step closer to licensure.

SLPs work with some of the most vulnerable members of our population. Many of their patients lack the ability to communicate and therefore anyone working with them must consent to a background check to keep the patients safe and protected.

After submitting your application for licensure to the Board you can register for the fingerprint background check. Fingerprints can be captured electronically or manually depending on your preference.

If using a manual fingerprint card, first visit Cogent Systems online and select the Applicant Registration tab. Choose the Secretary of State tab and then the GA Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology tab. Continue to follow the instructions and make the required payment. Print and take a coy of the receipt with you to the fingerprinting location.

To have your fingerprints captured electronically enter the Helpful Links header and select Find a Fingerprint Location. Visit the site location with the following documents:

• Registration receipt with confirmation number
• Valid picture ID

The results are then transferred to the Board for review.

There is also a Name-Based Criminal History Record Information Consent/Inquiry Form that is part of your application packet. Signing the form gives entities like the Board, permission to periodically perform a criminal history background check for the duration of your SLP licensure.

Before applying for a permanent license, you’ll first need a Paid Clinical Experience temporary permit. You are given 14 calendar days after your PCE begins to apply for this permit to the Board. It allows you to begin the post-graduate work experience required for licensure.

The temporary permit is valid for one year and can only be renewed once if the PCE period is extended.

• Secure & Verifiable Document
• Affidavit of Citizenship
• Immigration Documents (if applicable)
• $40 license fee (includes $10 processing fee)

After completing the PCE you are eligible to apply for a permanent SLP license by examination.

Here is a list of documents that should be submitted for licensure:

• Completed application
• Completed Paid Clinical Experience Form
• Praxis score
• $120 fee (includes $10 processing fee)
• Affidavit of Citizenship or applicable Secure and Verifiable Documents

Send the application packets with the document pages unfolded in a 9×12 envelope to:

Answer each question on the form as if any information is missing or incorrect your application will not be reviewed. If the incomplete application is not corrected within 60 days, the application is withdrawn and a new one must be submitted. Enter your current email address on the form as it is how the Board will communicate the acknowledgement of the application. If further documentation is required a notification will be sent to the same email address.

It takes the Board about 20 business days to process applications. Keep up with your application’s status by checking online . Completed applications should be received by the Board 15 days prior to its scheduled meeting to be added to the agenda. If not, the application won’t be reviewed until the next meeting convenes. Complete the leveling courses required for application to master’s programs in speech language pathology with the online Graduate Certificate in Pre-Professional Speech Language Pathology.

This certificate is designed for students who finished a bachelor’s degree in another area and are now interested in pursuing graduate work in speech-language pathology.  It is well suited to professionals who are seeking to change careers, recent graduates, and other potential students. Completion of the certificate will prepare you to apply to most master’s degree programs in speech language pathology, including the University of Georgia’s master’s program.  

The certificate requires seven online courses totaling 18 semester hours of graduate-level coursework. Students may complete all seven courses, or they may enroll only in those courses that are required to gain entrance into the master’s program of their choice.

Accreditations

The University of Georgia is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award baccalaureate, master’s, specialist, and doctoral degrees. The University of Georgia also may offer credentials such as certificates and diplomas at approved degree levels. Admissions Requirements:

Students applying to The University of Georgia for the Online Certificate in Pre-Professional Speech-Language Pathology must be accepted by the Graduate School. To be considered for admission to this program, students meet the following minimum requirements:

• Hold a bachelor’s degree from any institution accredited by the proper regional accrediting association
• Minimum overall GPA of 2.80

Students who are not currently enrolled at UGA should apply to the graduate school for the Graduate Certificate program in Pre-Professional Speech-Language Pathology and are not required to take entrance exams and submit letters of recommendation.

Program Structure

The certificate requires the following seven fully online courses, with no electives or other options, totaling 18 semester hours of required graduate-level coursework. Classes available in any one semester will vary, and will be determined through program advisement.

Students intending to pursue ASHA certification, state licensure, or state teacher certification/credentialing in speech-language pathology may need to complete courses other than those required for this certificate, depending on their own previous educational background.

To remain in the program after the first semester, students must maintain a 2.75 GPA in the program’s courses and meet basic expectations for professional and ethical behavior.  Completion of the certificate requires earning a grade of “B-” or better in each course.

The Master of Health Science in Speech-Language Pathology {residential} at Augusta University is an applicant for accreditation by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, 2200 Research Boulevard, #310, Rockville, MD 20850, 800-498-2071.

As an applicant for accreditation by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) in Speech-Language Pathology, graduates from the Augusta University Master of Health Science in Speech-Language Pathology are eligible to sit for the Praxis Examination in Speech-Language Pathology (5331). The Praxis Examination in Speech-Language Pathology (5331) is an integral component of ASHA (American Speech-Language Hearing Association) national certification standards and a requirement for state professional licensure. Individuals are eligible to apply for national certification once they have completed all graduate-level academic course work and clinical practicum and been judged by the graduate program as having acquired all of the knowledge and skills mandated by current CAA and CFCC (Council for Clinical Certification in Speech-Language Pathology) standards.  When an earned passing score on the Praxis exam is achieved, the dept has determined a speech-language pathologist is eligible to apply for licensure to practice in any state or territory within the United States.

Program Overview

• Only USG program affiliated with an academic health center, Wellstar MCG Health .
• Intended to provide experiential learning opportunities to keep pace with the increase of medical SLP service delivery needs.
• One-of-a-kind curriculum to include SLPP 6600 Head and Neck Cancer and SLPP 6000 Anatomy of the Head and Neck, a lecture/cadaver lab course for reflective hands-on learning.
• Lab training opportunities using professional grade Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) and Voice Lab equipment.
• Experiential learning to practice clinical skills at the state-of-the-art 40,000 square foot Interdisciplinary Simulation Center (ISC).
• Interprofessional Education (IPE) opportunities with occupational therapy, physical therapy, respiratory therapy, physician assistant, dietician, and medical students.
• Study Abroad opportunity in Jamaica providing therapeutic services to the residents of Mustard Seed Communities.
• One-of-a-kind opportunities to experience clinical rotations at inpatient and outpatient AUMC, Georgia Cancer Center, Children’s Hospital of Georgia, Charlie Norwood VA Hospital, and Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home, local school districts, outpatient pediatric and adult therapy facilities, etc.
• One-of-a-kind opportunities to participate in on-campus specialty clinics - Interdisciplinary Equality Clinic , Clinica Latina, Costa Layman , Healthy Grandparents and Parkinson's Support Group .
• White coat ceremony to officially mark a student’s transition into the world of healthcare.

Program Goals

• Prepare graduates with the required knowledge and clinical skillset needed for entry level professional practice and employment in a range of education and health-related work settings and be recognized for their competence, leadership, ethics, and commitment to service and life-long learning.
• Transform graduates to become independent clinicians to deliver effective, culturally sensitive, and evidenced-based clinical services to individuals with differences or disorders in communication and swallowing. 
• Provide graduates with a well-rounded, high-quality academic and clinical experience that is directed by certified SLP faculty and clinical supervisors promoting transformational learning, mentorship, and service-learning through critical thinking and evidence-based clinical practices. 
• Offer an innovative and well-rounded curriculum of study to promote the development of interprofessional educational practice to guide clinical decision-making via interdisciplinary collaboration with on-campus academic programs to include occupational therapy, physical therapy, respiratory therapy, physician assistant, dietician, nursing and medical students.

Applicant Information

An undergraduate degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders, Speech Language Pathology or Speech and Hearing Science is preferred, but not required for application to the program.

Requirements

• Applicants will submit an official transcript verifying an earned undergraduate degree from an accredited institution AND official transcripts from an accredited institution(s) of the following FIVE prerequisite courses with an earned grade of B or better within the past FIVE years prior to applying to the program. All FIVE prerequisites MUST be approved by program admissions as equivalent/accepted prerequisite courses from an accredited institution.

• Documentation of a minimum 25 hours of guided clinical observation hours of professionals who hold the CCC-SLP. In-person observations are encouraged across a variety of settings and disorders. Documentation must include CCC-SLP signature AND ASHA # of each observed CCC-SLP.
• Minimum 3.0 GPA average of last 60 credit hours
• CASPer (online, open response situational judgement test)

• GRE is not required

English proficiency exam scores are required for applicants whose first language is not English and who do not qualify for an English proficiency exam waiver per the criteria listed below. Augusta University will accept official  Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)  or  International English Language Test (IELTS) exam scores. TOEFL Minimum Overall Score is 79 internet based or 213 computer based. The IELTS Minimum Overall Band Score: 6.5.  Official exam scores must be taken within 2 years of the date of application. The Augusta University institution code for submission of TOEFL or IELTS scores is 5406. Please do not select a department code. 

• The program will utilize the Communication Sciences & Disorders Centralized Application Service (CSDCAS) , a centralized application service for graduate level speech-language pathology academic programs. The CSDCAS application fee is $125 for the first graduate program applied to and $50 for each additional graduate program. All information must be submitted directly to CSDCAS to complete your application. CSDCAS requires 4-6 weeks to process your information and verify your transcripts, so start early! As part of the online CSDCAS application, you will need to submit all of the program application required documents directly to CSDCAS. Go to Applicant Login  

Graduate Information

• Graduates will obtain a minimum of 400 clinical clock hours required for graduation supervised by American Speech & Hearing Association (ASHA) certified clinical supervisors, a requirement for full eligibility to complete the Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY).
• Graduates will be well prepared for the Praxis Exam in Speech-Language Pathology required for state licensure.
• Graduates will demonstrate professional practice competencies leading to the ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP), a nationally recognized certification required for employment.
• Graduates will be eligible for professional state licensure by the Georgia Board of Speech-Language Pathology and the Georgia Educator Certificate in the field of speech-language pathology by the Georgia Board of Education.
• SLP graduates will improve community health by increasing the provision of highly qualified SLP graduates to fill the state and nationwide critical shortage.

Speech pathologists explain practice for National Speech-Language-Hearing Month Dynamic Therapy is offering free screenings exclusively for Atlanta News First and PeachtreeTV viewers through June.

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Did you know May is National Speech-Language-Hearing Month?

Darius Thomas, founder and CEO of Dynamic Therapy, and Brian McDaniel, a licensed speech-language pathologist at the practice, came to Atlanta News First to talk about speech pathology. They explained what speech pathology is and discussed the services their practice offers, as well as what parents should look out for as their child begins to speak.
