My Best Friend Essay 100 Words

I always thank God that he sent Rahul into my life as my best friend, and I also wish that everyone has a friend like Rahul. Rahul and I met on the first day of school after the summer vacation when we were studying in the 5th standard.

I also remember an incident when our class teacher asked him about his previous school and the place from where he came. He is a good speaker, and he gave an interesting answer to everyone in his introduction in class.

He is good at studies and also a good athlete. He loves running and singing too, and his handwriting is also very neat and clean. I feel happy to become his friend, and he also loves my company, and we spend most of our time together.

My Best Friend Essay 200 Words

I have had a lot of friends since childhood, but Raghav is one of the kindest and most trustworthy friends for me. I must say that Rohan has been my best friend since childhood. He is a very good person and a true friend because he has a good manner that he never lies to anyone, and hates people who lie to him. He is a kind boy and also a sincere student. We both live in the same building, and our apartments are also in front of each other.

My parents also met my friend in the school at the parents-teachers meeting, and they also like Raghav and his sincerity. We both have been in the same class from the 3rd standard until now. We are in the 10th standard now, and we both help each other in the preparation for Board exams, which will be held in the month of March.

He always invites me to his house to play video games with him. Every Sunday, we both enjoy playing video games with popcorn and juice together. Sometimes, our school teachers also wonder about our true friendship and the strong bond between us. He has a set of badminton rackets and a shuttle, and we also play together in the evening near our building. We both love each other’s company.

My Best Friend Essay 300 Words

Everyone has at least a single friend who is more than just a friend to them. Getting a friend is common, but getting a true friend is very rare and a bit special. It is like a big achievement for people to get a trustworthy and lifelong best friend. I also had a best friend in my life too since childhood. His name is Ganaraj, and his mother is Telugu. We are neighbors too and also classmates. We always sit together in school and also spend most of the time together.

He is a very talented person and always supports me in my studies. We both like mathematics, and also we love to solve maths numerical problems. I like to play games, and we both always play games together and participate in the sports that are held in school. Our favorite sport is Cricket, and we both are good all-rounders on our school cricket team. Our class teacher always suggests and supports us to play cricket even better and also helps in education to achieve success in life.

He is very valuable to me, and I always value his friendship as I value my parents. He is like my family, as a brother from another mother. Whenever I need his help and support, my best friend is there for me to hold me. We both live in the precious moment and create memories that will stay with me forever. Our friendship is a kind of beautiful relationship, and I hope any kind will never break these mistakes. Every Sunday, we go together to a playground near our locality, and we spend most of our time there. My parents also like Ganaraj to be my friend. Everyone is happy with our friendship and has a strong bond that never goes down in any situation.

My Best Friend Essay 500 Words

My best friend’s name is Siddhart Jadhav. We have been friends since class 7th A in Alfred Nobel High School. We both studied in the same school in childhood but not in the same class as our sections are different. Later that time, all the students from all the sections are sorted according to the previous academics’ percentages and grades and separated into four different sections. Due to this separation, I met Siddhart in the 7th A, and we became friends at that time. Later, time goes by, and our friendship bond becomes stronger, and we become best friends with each other and spend most of our time together in school, tuition, and extra classes. We also sit on the same bench in the classroom.

Our likes and dislikes are also common, and we also love to dance and sing. In every annual gathering and other function that is held in our school, we both participate and give our best performances. We never wanted to win the competitions, our intention was to enjoy the gathering. Some of our school teachers don’t like our togetherness and friendship, but some of them loved and always blessed our strong bonded friendship to stay longer and longer. Siddharth and I always talked in the running classroom, and most of the time, our teacher also punished both of us by standing outside the classroom. We always tried to irritate the lecturer in the chemistry lectures by asking tons of doubts and questions. We eat tiffin boxes sitting on the last benches.

Apart from this naughtiness, Siddharth is very punctual, and he is never late for coming to school and attending classes. He always completes his homework at a given time and being with him, I also start studying very well and completing my homework on time. He keeps his books and copies very clean. His writing is very nice and encourages me to write cleanly and clearly for better understanding. My parents also compliment my friend that being with him, I also become responsible and a good student.

Siddharth and I are both excellent football players and athletes. When we both start playing the football game, the opponent team never wins. Our sports teacher always motivates us and tells us that we will become good football players one day. My parents also know Siddharth very much, and they like his pleasant behavior. Feel free when Siddharth and I stay together, whether for playing games, video games, study, or for going out to have fun with other classmates. Siddharth is my best friend, my first friend. He is the one who offers me help in my studies when I need it, supports me and always shows love to me, defends me, and stands by my side in any situation no matter what.

In academics, my best friend, Siddharth, is chosen to be awarded the best student of the year in the 10th class. He is one of the brilliant students of our school and also won many of the competitions that were held in school. He is like a well-wisher, and I always enjoyed his company. He, too, feels secure and relieved by spending time with me as well. He is like a problem-solving friend to me. I never wanted to lose him in my life.

How To Write a My Best Friend Essay

' data-src=

Definition: What Is a My Best Friend Essay?

Write about what you know is sage advice often given to fledgling writers. And what do many of our young students know more about than their trusty sidekick, who is a constant presence through thick and thin?

A My Best Friend Essay is precisely what it sounds like; an essay the student writes that is focused on their closest pal’s endearing attributes (and otherwise).

However, the My Best Friend Essay is more than just a chance for students to wax lyrical about their BFFs. It is an authentic opportunity for students to hone their composition skills and exercise their creative flair.

All this while talking about one of their best mate – not bad!

STRUCTURING a My Best Friend Essay

This is an essay. It says so right there in the title! Just how complex the structure of a student’s essay is will depend on essential factors such as age and ability. However, the 5-paragraph essay structure is a perfect framework for this type of composition.

One of the most beautiful aspects of the 5-paragraph essay is that it is easily modified to differentiate between lower or higher ability students by simply adjusting the number of paragraphs. The essay will still contain the same essential elements of an introduction, a body, and a conclusion, regardless of how long it is.

The 5-paragraph (or hamburger) essay is a craft in itself and much too broad a topic to go into at length. Check out our complete guide here if you want more detail on this handy essay template.

Briefly though, in essence, the 5-paragraph essay comprises three parts:

  • The Introduction : The opening paragraph will orient the reader to the topic of the essay, in this case, by introducing the show’s star, the best friend .
  • The Body : In the traditional 5-paragraph essay, this makes up three of the five paragraphs. In this type of essay, the student will use these paragraphs to flesh out the main reasons they value their friend, or (at a more advanced level) they will tell a story about them that illustrates why they are the student’s best friend.
  • The Conclusion : In the conclusion, the student can sum up why their friend holds the hallowed title of ‘best’. Or, at a higher level, the student can use the final paragraph of their essay to look forward to the future of their relationship with their best friend.

My Best Friend Essay Story

While we are teaching a short essay on my best friend’, it can also be approached from another angle, i.e., as a nonfiction story.

While the clearcut essay format may be eminently suitable for younger students, you may wish to revisit this genre with older students, this time emphasising storytelling.

In this creative nonfiction approach, students can merge the essay format with storytelling elements such as character, setting, central conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.

Constructing their best friend composition in this manner allows students to work on structuring a nonfiction text. Simultaneously, it offers them a chance to develop their creative flair.

My Best Friend in 10 Lines

Another approach particularly well-suited to younger students is the my best friend essay 10 lines format.

This helps younger students get writing by giving them a clear target to aim for, which makes planning easy.

However, you can still introduce the three elements of the 5-paragraph essay here. As students list the points they want to make in their 10 lines, they can be encouraged to group these into introduction, body, and conclusion sections.

For example, a plan might look like this:

A ‘My Best Friend in 10 Lines’ Plan

Introduction

Line 1: My friend’s name.

Line 2: What she looks like.

Line 3: Where she is from/her family.

Line 4: What friendship means to me.

Line 5: How we met.

Line 6: The kindest thing she has ever done.

Line 7: The funniest thing she has ever done.

Line 8: My absolute favorite thing about her.

Line 9: Restate why she is my best friend.

Line 10: How I see our future together.

To complete their 10-line ode to their friend, the student simply builds proper sentences around each of these (or similar) ideas.

More on Planning a My Best Friend Composition

As we can see in the sample plan above, the planning process is relatively straightforward when the 5-paragraph essay structure serves as a framework. However, we may want to take things up a notch for students of a higher ability.

A good, old-fashioned brainstorming session is an excellent starting point for the student. They can list their favorite memories and their friend’s best features.

While younger students may inevitably write something of a hagiography (a biography of a saint!), older students may want to present a more realistic portrait of their ever-present amigo.

Likewise, if the student is undertaking their composition in a narrative nonfiction form, they’ll need to map out the narrative arc of their story at the planning stage.

As with any story, the conflict will serve as the engine of the narrative. However, this conflict does not have to take the form of a problem between the writer and the best friend. After all, this text is more likely to be something of a love letter than a letter of complaint. Instead, the conflict is more likely to take the form of a problem or a challenge faced by the writer and their pal together.

Whether or not the student’s text will take a full-blown story form, true-to-life anecdotes will bring life to the student’s writing. The planning process is the perfect time to dump these onto paper, even if they don’t all make it into the final draft.

How to Start a MY Best Friend Essay

As with most text types, fiction or nonfiction, the writer will want to grab the reader’s attention from the outset. An effective way of doing this is by using a hook.

How to Hook The Reader

The student writer has many methods available to grasp the reader’s attention. While some of these will only be suitable for more advanced students, most can be adapted with a bit of effort for our younger writers.

  • Start in the Middle of the Action

Technically known as, In Medias Res , this technique involves opening the story in the middle of a moment of dramatic tension with the exposition filled in later. This type of wizardry is probably best reserved for the more skilled student writer.

  • Make a Bold Promise at the Outset

The promise of a big payoff can undoubtedly catch a reader’s eye and draw them in, but the student-writer must follow through later in the text. For less experienced students, you may want to offer a writing prompt to help out here. For example,

My best friend Jack is truly one of a kind, but just how special he is wasn’t clear to me until the day a fire broke out in our school.

Students can quickly adapt such prompts by changing the event mentioned to their own circumstances.

  • Create a Sense of Intimacy

Another way to grasp the reader’s interest is to create a sense of intimacy right from the start. This can be achieved by addressing the reader directly in a conversational tone. Students should use informal language and approach writing their text as if they were speaking to a close friend – this is perfect for this writing style.

  • Open with an Anecdote

Another way to create interest (and a sense of intimacy) is to open up with an interesting anecdote about the friend. Students can select an interesting or humorous story to use as a carrot to entice the reader in. The student could substitute an exciting or amusing fact in shorter pieces for a full-blown anecdote.

  • Begin with a Quotation

Quotes are a great way to garner attention. There are many online repositories of inspirational quotes on every topic under the sun where students can find a golden nugget of friendship-based wisdom to open their masterpieces. They must simply type in keywords such as ‘famous’, ‘quotes’, and ‘friendship’ to uncover a smorgasbord of well-articulated wisdom for students to choose from. However, students should ensure the sentiment expressed in their selected quote ties into the type of friendship described in their work.

Working the Body

As we stated earlier in this article, the 5-paragraph essay structure, or the narrative writing arc, lays out a suitable template for the student-writer to work their way through the body of their text. However, it’s worth pointing out five areas where a little attention can significantly impact.

  • Get Specific

The devil’s in the details. The more specific the student is in their writing, the more effectively they will communicate with the reader.

Encourage students to be as precise as possible in their descriptions. A thesaurus is an excellent tool to help students find just the right word for the job.

  • Vary Sentence Length

Often, emergent writers rely on the same couple of simple sentence structures in their writing. This soon makes the writing monotonous for the reader; if they continue to read, it is only with effort that they will finish the student’s work.

Variety is not only the spice of life but also the spice of good writing. Encourage students to vary their sentence structures and alternate between long and short sentences to diversify the rhythm of their writing and evoke interest on the reader’s part.

  • Use Dialogue

Weaving dialogue into a my best friend essay text is a great way to bring colour and variety to a student’s writing. It also allows the student to practice punctuating dialogue – an essential skill!

Students will need to learn to listen carefully if they are to be able to write how people actually speak. Encouraging them to read their dialogue aloud is an effective way to check if it rings true.

  • Incorporate Literary Devices

Though this is undoubtedly a nonfiction text, it has firm roots in creative writing too. Students should incorporate some of the literary techniques and devices that we’d more commonly associate with poetry and fiction writing to add colour, creativity, and imagination to their writing.

For example, for younger students, physical descriptions of their BFF provide the perfect opportunity to introduce similes and hyperbole. Don’t be afraid to get comical here; writing should be fun, after all.

Does their friend have a big nose? How big? As big as an elephant’s trunk, perhaps?

Just make sure students avoid being too mean or poking fun at areas too sensitive for their friends.

It is easy to differentiate different abilities by challenging stronger students to use more complex literary devices in their work. Zoomorphism anyone?

  • Evoke the Five Senses

Emergent writers often display a bias towards only using the sense of sight in their descriptions. To bring their writing up a notch, encourage your students to employ all five senses in their writing.

By evoking the sense of hearing, smell, taste, and touch in their work, students will help their writing to come alive in the reader’s imagination.

WRAPPING THINGS Up

In a regular 5-paragraph essay, the concluding paragraph is usually the time to summarize the main arguments and drive home the thesis statement one more time. Obviously, things are a little bit different in a “my best friend essay.”

Of course, students can take the opportunity to revisit and restate the main reasons why their best friend holds the best-friend-championship belt. Still, there is a more artistic way to use their composition’s final paragraph.

Ask students to think about their friendship and where they see it in five, ten, twenty, or even forty years.

Undoubtedly, for younger students, in particular, this may be a bit of a challenge, but it can be a fun thought experiment too. Students can pose themselves questions to help, such as:

  • Will we be neighbours?
  • Will we work together?
  • Will our children go to school together? Etc.

Taking a tentative step into the possibilities of the future can make for an impactful ending.

My Best Friend Essay: 500 Words

Introduction.

‘A man is known by the company he keeps’, Says a proverb. Hence one needs to be very careful in selecting friends. As Shakespeare has pointed out in his play ‘As You Like It’, ‘Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly’. Fair-weather friends are plenty; true and reliable friends are few and far between.

My Best Friend

I have many friends in my school , but most of them are only so-called friends. They are not dependable. Out of them, only Arvind is my true and sincere friend. He is my best friend. I am, indeed, proud of his friendship.

Arvind is the only son of a district court judge. Even then he is very humble and modest. His financial position is sound and enviable. Yet prosperity has not turned him proud and rude. He is not puffed with pride.

His Qualities

Arvind has all the fine qualities of head and heart. He is tall, healthy, and handsome. He is affectionate, kind, sociable, and extremely helpful. He is a good sportsman on the playground and an inviable scholar in the classroom.  All praise, honour, and admiration sit lightly on him. He is not swollen-headed. He is all the more modest and polite because of them.

He is a hard-working boy. He is kind and compassionate. His heart melts at the sight of poverty, sickness and human suffering of any kind. In order to serve the suffering humanity selflessly, he has decided to become a doctor and set up his medical practice in some rural Adivasi area. He often says that the selfless service of the poor is the true service of God.

Our Friendship

I am so proud that I have such an ideal friend like Arvind. Because of his company and rare friendship, my outlook, attitude, and behaviour have been positively influenced. His friendship has given a new, healthy dimension to my life and I, now, look forward to a happy and bright future.

Arvind is indeed, the architect of my life and the moulder of my destiny in the right direction. He is my friend, guide, and philosopher. I envy myself for having such an ideal friend.

If you’re writing an essay and want to put your best friend in the spotlight, check out these essay examples on essays about best friends.

Best friends are those with whom we have formed a deep and unique bond. What makes them remarkably special is that we chose them unlike with family. For this, some even consider their best friends to be extensions of themselves.

We all trust our best friends wholeheartedly; that’s why they are the best people to confide in. And many of the lasting memories in our lives are those that we create with them. These memories could be filled with waves of boisterous laughter or even the most piercing pain when your friendship is tested.

Read on and find essay examples and prompts that could motivate you to write about best friends.

5 Essay Examples

1. how friendships change in adulthood by julie beck, 2. diamonds are not this girl’s best friend by courtney carver, 3. how to tell your best friend you’re in love with them – by those who have taken the plunge by sirin kale, 4. my best friend died: a real-life guide to coping by gabrielle applebury, 5. is it normal to not have a best friend by viktor sander, 7 helpful writing prompts on essays about best friends, 1. describe your best friend, 2. hanging out with your best friend , 3. long distance friendship, 4. cutting off toxic best friends, 5. falling in love with your best friend, 6. famous literary friendships, 7. a dog is a man’s best friend.

“Hanging out with a set of lifelong best friends can be annoying, because the years of inside jokes and references often make their communication unintelligible to outsiders. But this sort of shared language is part of what makes friendships last.”

The above essay delves into the evolution of friendship throughout the different stages of our lives, from childhood and teen years to family life and retirement. While we have all deferred a meetup with friends several times to attend to family and work, many people still treat their friendship as stable and continuous, even in long lapses in communication.

You might also find these essays about camping trips helpful.

“My best friend is a magical, rooftop sunrise. My best friend is the ocean. My best friend is a hike in the mountains. My best friend is a peaceful afternoon. My best friend is a really good book. My best friend is laughter. My best friend is seeing the world. My best friend is time with people I love.”

This essay takes on a broader definition of a “best friend,” deriving from Marilyn Monroe’s famous quote: “Diamond are a girl’s best friend.” From having excessive material wants for every occasion, the author realizes that the greatest “friends” in life are not material things but the simple joys that nature and love can bring.

“It was supposed to go the way things do in the movies. Nora would tell her best friend that she loved him, he would feel the same way and then they would kiss – preferably in the rain. So when the 30-year-old arts manager declared her love for her best friend when they were still teenagers, she expected a happy ending.”

The essay by Srirn Kale treats its readers to compelling stories of best friends ending up in marriage and those parting ways because of unrequited love. But, before taking the bold step of declaring your love for your best friend, a relationship guru advises lovers first to read the signs that signal any reciprocity of these deep feelings.

“Losing a best friend may be one of the most difficult and heartbreaking experiences you have in your lifetime. If you aren’t sure how to process that your best friend died, know that there are many healthy options when it comes to coping with this type of loss.”

Coping with losing a best friend could lead to depression or even suicidal thoughts, especially if your best friend means the world to you. Some coping tips include journaling your grieving process to understand your emotions and confusion better and doing things that can relive your best friend’s memories.

“If you are happy with the friends you currently have, there’s no need to try making a best friend for the sake of it. You might have friends but no best friend; that’s perfectly OK. It’s not necessary to have a BFF.”

Not everyone has a best friend. Some would find this fact hard to believe, but a YouGov survey has shown that 1 in 5 of the US population claims to have no close friends. The essay, therefore, explores the reasons for this friendlessness and gives tips on building a bond with potential best friends, starting with your existing circle of acquaintances.

Essays About Best Friends: Describe your best friend

Begin this essay by describing what your best friend looks like and what traits you like most about them. Then, given these qualities, would you consider your best friend a role model? Your essay can also answer how similar you and your best friend are and what things you both agree on. But if you have more differences than similarities, write how you deal with them or put them aside.

In this essay, describe your favorite ways to hang out with your best friend. What do you like doing together? Describe what a day spent with your best friend looks like and which part you like most about your dates. If your conversations draw your mutual admiration for each other, then talk about what topics make you talk for hours on end and their perspectives on things that you find fascinating.

Do different time zones make friends grow apart? Or does distance make the heart grow fonder? First, interview two to three people whose best friends moved to a different country or city. Next, learn how frequently they communicate with each other. Finally, compile these stories and make a smooth transition to each one such that the structure highlights the challenges of long-distance friendships and how each set of friends gets by.

Discarding best friends is a hard decision. But it is also brave if you feel they are dragging you down. For this prompt, you can pose a list of questions readers can ask themselves to grasp the situation better. For example, is your friend doing you more harm than good? Have you set boundaries that they find hard to respect? Then, explain how reflecting on each question can help one determine when it is time to cut some ties loose.

Falling in love with your best friend can only end in two scenarios: a happy ever after or an end of a beautiful relationship. Expanding on our essay prompt above, list down more tips to know when it is best to confront your best friend about your feelings or work hard to quash your emotions for the continuity of the relationship.

Pick out best friends from novels that formed friendships that touched you the most. They could be Harry, Ron, Hermoine of Harry Potter, Frodo, Sam of the Lord Of The Rings, or even Sherlock and Watson From The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes. First, describe what it is in their friendship that you find most riveting. Then, narrate events that served as the biggest tests to their friendships and how they conquered these challenges.

What about dogs that some people find more lovable than others? Answer this in your essay by outlining the traits that make a dog the ideal best friend. For one, their loyalty makes us confident that they will not betray us. If you have a dog, write about the qualities that make your dog a reliable and fun companion. Then, narrate events when your dog proved to be your best friend.

📝 Friendship Essay Structure

🏆 best friendship topic ideas & essay examples, 💡 good essay topics on friendship, 🎓 simple & easy friendship essay titles, 📌 most interesting friendship topics to write about, ❓ research questions about friendship.

Describing a friend, talking about your relationship and life experiences can be quite fun! So, take a look at our topics on friendship in the list below. Our experts have gathered numerous ideas that can be extremely helpful for you. And don’t forget to check our friendship essay examples via the links.

Writing a friendship essay is an excellent way to reflect on your relationships with other people, show your appreciation for your friends, and explore what friendship means to you. What you include in your paper is entirely up to you, but this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t structure it properly. Here is our advice on structuring an essay on friendship:

  • Begin by selecting the right topic. It should be focused and creative so that you can earn a high mark. Think about what friendship means to you and write down your thoughts. Reflect on your relationship with your best friend and see if you can write an essay that incorporates these themes. If these steps didn’t help – don’t worry! Fortunately, there are many web resources that can help you choose. Browse samples of friendship essays online to see if there are any topics that interest you.
  • Create a title that reflects your focus. Paper titles are important because they grasp the reader’s attention and make them want to read further. However, many people find it challenging to name their work, so you can search for friendship essay titles online if you need to.
  • Once you get the first two steps right, you can start developing the structure of your essay. An outline is a great tool because it presents your ideas in a clear and concise manner and ensures that there are no gaps or irrelevant points. The most basic essay outline has three components: introduction, body, and conclusion. Type these out and move to the next step. Compose an introduction. Your introduction should include a hook, some background information, and a thesis. A friendship essay hook is the first sentence in the introduction, where you draw the reader’s attention. For instance, if you are creating an essay on value of friendship, include a brief description of a situation where your friends helped you or something else that comes to mind. A hook should make the reader want to read the rest of the essay. After the hook, include some background information on your chosen theme and write down a thesis. A thesis statement is the final sentence of the first paragraph that consists of your main argument.
  • Write well-structured body paragraphs. Each body paragraph should start with one key point, which is then developed through examples, references to resources, or other content. Make sure that each of the key points relates to your thesis. It might be useful to write out all of your key points first before you write the main body of the paper. This will help you to see if any of them are irrelevant or need to be swapped to establish a logical sequence. If you are composing an essay on the importance of friendship, each point should show how a good friend can make life better and more enjoyable. End each paragraph with a concluding sentence that links it to the next part of the paper.
  • Finally, compose a conclusion. A friendship essay conclusion should tie together all your points and show how they support your thesis. For this purpose, you should restate your thesis statement at the beginning of the final paragraph. This will offer your reader a nice, well-balanced closure, leaving a good impression of your work.

We hope that this post has assisted you in understanding the basic structure of a friendship paper. Don’t forget to browse our website for sample papers, essay titles, and other resources!

Definition of a Good Friend: There are so many friends but everyone is not good. If you want to understand a friend good or bad, we need to follow a few rules. Today I will share these here. A good friend will never guide you to do a bad thing.

He will always forbid you to do any types of negative work. If he becomes fails to control you, he will leave you, but never support your bad thing. On the other hand, a bad friend will help you to do bad things. As an example, if any of your friends smoke and ask you to do smoking then, he is not a good friend.

A good friend will keep you away from bad habits. There are so many ways to understand someone’s friendship. So we all need to find good friends and need to spend time with them. This will keep us away from obstacles and problems.

Who Deserve to Be Your Best Friend?: Before considering someone as a best friend, you have to understand a thing that deserves to become a best friend? A friend who is trusted and you can trust him easily. They will have your faith with their behavior.

So before considering a best friend, understand if he is trusted or not. Anyone won’t allow a guy as a friend who lies a lot. Being a good student is also important. If your friend is a good student, you have a chance to do study better and improvise. Good students are better friends.

My Best Friend: My best friend’s name is Ritika. We are studying together in class three. She is a really attractive girl. She is very popular in school, because of her dancing skill. She is an amazing dancer and won the district championship last year.

Everyone in the school loves and respects her. I really feel proud because of her success. She is a good student also. She never misses the class and helps me a lot to do my homework. She lives in my neighborhood. Her family is our family friend. They visit our house on every occasion and we also visit their house. We love spending time together and she is really funny. She has a good sense of humor. She shares lots of interesting stories with me.

Conclusion: Having a best friend is really important in life. I have got Ritika and she will remain as a best friend forever. We have lots of common things between us that are the strength of our friendship.

Essay on My Best Friend (600 Words)

Essay on My Best Friend in 600 Words

Introduction: Friendship is a really good relationship between two humans. We all have friends and we understand the importance of friendship very well. We need to respect this relationship and need to work making our friendship better with our friends. But in most of the case, we have a special friend who is totally different from the others, who are so much similar to me and who understand me very well. Yes, we all have that friend. We call him ‘best friend’. Today I will share lots of things about my best friend.

My Best Friend: My best friend is Rajib, he is my classmate. We are studying together in primary school. We are childhood friends and spend most of our time together. After school, we meet and play in the nearest playground or spend time in the house.

Rajib’s father is an Engineer and his mother is a housewife. He has been raised in a really good family with a good manner. He presents himself very politely in the school with everyone. He respects every single teacher and all the teachers like him a lot. Not only the teacher but also the students love him a lot.

Rajib’s hobby is gardening. He has a very small garden in front of his house. Actually one of her elder cousins suggested he start gardening , from that time we together worked hard to make that plan true. Finally, now his garden is full of several flower trees. We are planning to seed some vegetables in the garden. I think he will be able to make the garden larger.

His family is really supportive. They care about him and give support to his works. His mother attends the class in every project or exam time. She is very aware of his study. As a result, he has been the top student in this class. I hope he will keep his performance continue in the near future.

His Special Skill: Rajib has a really amazing singing skill. We didn’t know anything about this. But in an annual function, he planned to sing a song. I was thinking to listen to something ordinary. But in the day, he sang ‘Amaro Porano Jaha Chay’, a Rabindranath song with amazing tune and voice. The entire school was silent while he was singing. I was really impressed. I loved his skill. I requested him to keep continue singing. And he is very positive about this. I hope one day, he will be a very famous singer.

Our Common Interests: We have so many common things, especially in hobbies and general interests. As I said before he has got a garden and it’s his hobby , I am also the same. Gardening is also my hobby. I am thinking to start my own garden. Except for gardening, he loves reading books like me. He has a family library in their house. When I visit their house I spend lots of time in the library. Sometimes I borrow a few books and send them back after reading.

Our Different Career Thinking: Besides singing he wants to become a doctor. And he is studying really hard for this. We have so much difference in thinking in this case. I always wanted to become a school teacher. I love teaching and I enjoy that profession. That’s the only and biggest difference between our interests.

Conclusion: Overall, he is the best friend of mine. We love spending time together. He is very helpful and kind-hearted. He loves to help people. If anyone face a problem, he never refuses to help them.

To truly understand who I am and how my best friend changed my life, I feel the need to share my story. Throughout my life, my mom has always said that my theme song should be 'Miss Independent' by Kelly Clarkson. I've always been someone who did things on my own. It's not that I didn't have any friends; I did. However, I found it much easier to take matters into my own hands. In middle school, my independence both defined and terrified me. I used to believe that because I was so independent, people didn't want to hang out with me. But I soon realized that wasn't true. My independence sometimes held me back from making more friends. Once I acknowledged this, I began to discover who I truly was. I realized that I had been changing myself depending on who I was with, until I met someone who genuinely brought out the best in me.

'Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned'?

Going into my freshman year of high school I had a solid group of friends. We did everything together, but around Christmas, I began to notice a change. My so-called friends were doing a lot of things without me, and eventually, my best friend turned everyone against me. Halfway through my first year of high school, I lost all of my friends. I never felt so lost and betrayed before. However, I am now so elated because I have some of the best friends in the entire world. They are all freshmen in college, but they treat me like family. When I was alone they took me in and made me feel wanted again. They helped to shape and show me who I am. I am quirky, shy yet outgoing, responsible, independent, caring, brutally honest, secluded, strong, impulsive, realistic, and much more, but I never would’ve realized this without my friends.

Now at this point you may have either decided that this is just like any other college essay, not what you were looking for, or you actually feel like you are starting to understand who I am. If you couldn’t tell my friends are one of the most important aspects of my life. I don’t have many super close friends, but that doesn’t bother me like it did before. I’m ridiculously self conscious, but before it was a lot worse. I had it set in my mind that because I wasn’t like everyone else I wasn’t normal. I was so hard on myself and it nearly destroyed me. My best friend, Erin, helped me get over this. She is my rock. Our friendship is just so effortless and easy. We know exactly what to do to help the other out, we know everything about the other, and at this point, we might as well be sisters. The prompt essentially stated, “write about something that you think your application would be incomplete without”. My application would be incomplete without Erin. She has been such a large part of my life. She has helped to shape me into the person I am today. She showed me that it’s okay that I am such an honest person. I used to hold my tongue when people said or did something that was morally wrong because I was afraid of the confrontation, but now I’m not as afraid.

So you see for me it wasn’t necessarily a personality trait, specific event, or interest that had an impact on me, but people. Throughout my whole high school career Erin has been by my side, and now that she’s at college herself, it is only fitting that she be a part of my application.

Compare and Contrast Essay: My Best Friend

My best friend is called Kelvin. I’ve always considered him my best friend since I met him because he had a certain aura about him. In this essay, I will compare and contrast some of the main aspects of his character with those of my second best friend Amber to craft a clear argument as to why I consider him my best friend.

To start with, Kelvin has an open mind. He’s unlike Amber because she will only tolerate certain views. If Kelvin doesn’t like something he will be completely honest about it, but he won’t show it in a negative fashion. Amber, on the other hand, will do so and won’t be able to hide her boredom. I admire someone who can be as open minded as Kelvin.

Kelvin is also not afraid of showing off his opinions in the right way. In the event he disagrees with something I’ve done, he will make it clear that he disagrees. Amber also does this, and this is why I also value her presence in my life. I don’t like the proverbial yes men. I want real opinions, and that’s why we all get along so well.

One aspect where Kelvin contrasts with Amber is in the way he’ll happily try out new things. Amber is set in her ways and prefers to stick with what she knows. I’m similar to Amber, but I prefer Kelvin’s way of looking at things because he’s brought me out of my shell. Through my friendship with him, I’ve managed to experience things I would have never discovered without him.

Both Kelvin and Amber genuinely care about me and my affairs, though. They’re always interested in what I’m doing and how I am. They aren’t simply using me for their own ends. This is what I value in a best friend the most. On one occasion, I was having a hard time with the death of a loved one and I wanted to hide it. They were convinced something was wrong and they encouraged me to talk about it. Being able to talk about such matters with them helped me to get through the worst of it.

Another area where Kelvin stands out for me is the fact we have so much in common. Even if he wasn’t so open-minded, we would always get along because of our shared interests. We like the same type of music and can appreciate the same type of literature. This influences our conversations. It means we never get tired of speaking with each other.

On the other hand, Amber does have a lot of interests that I don’t share in. At times, this can mean we have little to talk about. Sometimes, we go through periods where we rarely speak. I’ve yet to run into this scenario with Kelvin.

Overall, Kelvin is my best friend because we have so many similarities. This is a relationship of mutual convenience. It’s not one-sided and we’re both equal partners. Whilst I value Amber in my life, we do have differences, and these differences can divide us on occasion.

My friends are my sounding board; I can always open up and share whatever is on my mind, from silly secrets to life-changing dreams. They pick me up when things get tough and cheer for me even louder than I do whenever I reach a milestone! With them by my side, every day of life becomes an adventure full of joys big or small.

an essay about my friends

My friends are a beautiful bouquet of uniqueness – a diverse array of personalities, passions and capabilities. But the most precious petals in this bunch have to be their kindness, loyalty and unwavering support for me through thick and thin!

Spending quality time with my friends is an absolute blast! From playing sports, to watching movies and discovering new places, it’s never a dull moment. Even when we don’t agree 100%, our friendship always manages to pull us through whatever challenge comes its way.

I’m continually blessed with the most remarkable friends who constantly encourage and support me through thick and thin. They lift my spirits, help make me a better version of myself, as well as motivate me to really reach for all that life has to offer, it’s truly priceless! For this beautiful friendship we share, I am forever thankful- cherished moments together are something no one can ever take away from us.

So let’s take this moment to appreciate our connections with each other; it is these relationships that bring us such immense happiness.

Essay 2: Unforgettable Experience with My Friends

My friends are the greatest blessing I’ve ever received! Last summer, we decided to take a break from everyday life and sneak away into nature. We all loaded up on camping supplies – tents, food you name it – before setting off for our adventure in the woods. It was an unforgettable experience that none of us will soon forget!

After a long day of fun and exploration, our group found ourselves huddled around the campfire. We swapped stories and shared plenty of laughs as we cooked marshmallows to perfection over the crackling flames! Plus, who can resist hot chocolate on a chilly evening? Needless to say, it was one for the books – an unforgettable night that I’ll cherish forever.

We kicked off the morning with a plunge into icy lake waters, but nothing could dampen our enthusiasm for this special adventure. With sun-kissed faces and hearts full of happy memories, we departed – each one looking forward to many more days just like this!

Essay 3: The Last Time I Saw My Friends

It was an unforgettable party night with my crew! We celebrated the occasion with dinner and karaoke. All of a sudden there was a pandemic. Dinner is forever etched in our memory as a special time that we all share.

Then everything changed. A pandemic hit and we were all stuck at home. We had to cancel all plans and meetings. It was hard not being able to see my friends, but I kept in touch with them through social media and video calls.

We will meet again when the situation improves. I can’t wait to see my friends and catch up on everything that has happened to her this past year. I miss her.

Essay 4: An Adventure Trip with My Friends

Last summer, I went on an adventure trip with my friends. We decided to take a road trip to explore the countryside. We rented a van and packed up. We were so excited to start our journey.

I had a great time hiking, exploring new places, and enjoying the beauty of nature. It was the perfect mix of adventure, fun and friendship. We clicked lots of pictures, played games, and sang songs around the campfire in the evenings.

On the last day, we exchanged presents and thanked each other for making wonderful friends in our lives. Traveling was not just about having fun. It was about creating memories to cherish for a lifetime.

In summary, an adventure trip with friends is one of life’s most beautiful experiences. It helps you relax, reconnect with nature, and strengthen your bond with your friends. I am blessed to have wonderful friends who always inspire me to explore new horizons and make the most of life.

Essay 5: I Love My Friends Essay

Friends are the most important part of our lives. They are the ones who stand by us through thick and thin, and we can always count on them to be there for us. I am lucky to have such amazing friends in my life, and I am grateful for each and every one of them.

My friends are my support system, and they are always there to cheer me up when I am feeling down. We share many memories together, from fun nights out to heart-to-heart conversations over coffee. No matter what we are doing, we always have a great time together.

One of the reasons I love my friends so much is that they accept me for who I am. They never judge me, and they are always there to offer a listening ear or a shoulder to cry on. We may have our differences, but we always find a way to work through them.

Another reason I love my friends is that they make me a better person. They inspire me to be my best self, and they encourage me to pursue my dreams. I am constantly learning from them, and I know that I would not be where I am today without their love and support.

In conclusion, I love my friends more than words can express. They have brought so much joy and happiness into my life, and I am truly blessed to have them. I look forward to creating many more memories with them in the future and am grateful for the wonderful gift of their friendship.

Essay on How I Met My Best Friend

April 6, 2020 by Study Mentor 4 Comments

Best friend is a person who is like your family. A person with whom you can share anything without having the fear of being judged by that person and also that person will heal all your problems too. Best friends are like brother and sister who becomes a part of your family with time.

They are always there with you and also take part in all kind of activities with you including doing prank on someone and to share the blame with you. They become your lifeline without whom survival is going to be difficult for you. Best friend are a part of someone’s life.

That person is a part that cannot be separated so easily from you. A best friend always supports you and does crazy things with you. A best friend makes life more fun and fills it with happiness. There is no replacement of a best friend in one’s life.

I and my best friend go way back. She has become the main pillar in my life without which I will fall down. Both of us are absolutely crazy and follow each other blindly. We have become each other’s support for years now. I still laugh when I remember the first time I saw her and exactly how we become friends and then best friend.

It was around five years back that I met her. I had changed my school and went to join a new one. I was the late admission student. The first day I went to my classroom and saw that all the benches are full except for the last bench where one sit was open.

I went and sat there. Our class teacher came and after he saw me sitting in the last bench, made me get up and sit beside two other students in a bench that was too small for three students to sit. I didn’t want to sit there and neither the occupants of that bench wanted me to sit there.

But sir made me sit there. I could feel that they don’t want me there and they could feel that I didn’t want to sit there. But we weren’t given a choice in that matter.

The student beside whom I sat that day is my best friend now. That time we both mutually disliked each other and didn’t want to sit beside each other at any cost. So, after sir left I immediately changed my sit and went back to the last bench.

The next day, I went really early so that I can sit somewhere I like and can possibly make new friend and it did happen. I made a new friend and we became bench buddies. The bench that I chose to sit on happened to be the bench just before the bench in which she sat on.

Days passed and neither of us became friends or talk with each other. But both of us wanted one common thing and that is none of us wanted the other to sit anywhere else other than our respected benches because none of us liked the other girls in our class much other than our respective friend slash bench mates and boys was out of the question.

So, whichever of us went first, always kept the sit on the other bench so that no one can sit there except us. That is how we started talking.

After we started talking, we still didn’t hit it off. We still weren’t anything more than class mates but at least we were talking normally. But if we were given the chance, we wouldn’t even talk with the other willingly.

Then there were days when both of our partner’s were absent and during that time we used to sit by each other and that is something we chose to do. During that time we actually got interested in talking with each other and would talk with each other willingly.

Then came the time where we had to do a project and none of us had any idea how to do it. So, all of us were asking the other about it and the four of us decided that we will do the project together in her house. After I found out her address, I realised that she lives three minutes away from my house.

As I moved there that year only, none of us knew about each other. During that project only we hit it off and became friends. It was convenient for both of us as we are literally three minutes away from each other.

Then the winter came. Beside her house there was a small park and I used to visit that park frequently. During winter, we decided to play badminton with each other in that park. After our matches were over, we used to stay there till evening and used to talk about each other.

That is how we both bonded alone. After our talks, both of us realised that we are not that different from each other. There is a phrase that I remembered which was – same pole repel each other and at that particular winter, I realised that this is true not only for magnets but also in real life.

That winter five years ago, is the time when we actually bonded and became best of friends. There were many ups and downs in our life like board exam and then going to separate college and me moving away again but that did not affect our friendship at all.

We are still the same kind of best friends that we were before I moved away and we always will be like that. After all we consider each other as sisters.

Even today when we think about the first day we both saw each other, we laugh heartily. We can never forget how we met and how we became friends and then gradually best friends.

We proudly share this story while laughing at each other. I think because of how we become friends, our bond has gotten stronger and can withstand the test of time. Now if someone looks at us, they can never say that there was a time when we almost hated each other and will probably think that we are friends from childhood.

SOS! My Wedding Is 3 Months Away and I Still Don’t Have a Dress

By Nicole Kliest

Image may contain Audrey Hepburn Flower Flower Arrangement Flower Bouquet Plant Clothing Dress and Fashion

As I type this, it’s been four weeks and five days since I first developed an eyelid twitch. After misdiagnosing myself with Bell’s palsy and then a stroke, my friend’s husband, an actual optometrist, reported back that it was probably just Myokymia brought on by stress. (“Everyone in New York City is stressed—plus, you’re planning a wedding.”) So for the last 33 days, whenever I have a conversation that lasts longer than 60 seconds—the approximate cadence in between spasms—I abruptly look away or tap the corner of my eye as though I am deep in thought, when really I’m just tamping down my fluttering anxiety.

I never wanted to be the person who penned a personal essay about wedding stress. To toot my own horn here for a brief moment: the consistent piece of feedback I receive from friends and acquaintances that makes me feel good about myself is that I am a so-called ‘chill’ person. A trait that living in New York City for nearly a decade has surely started to chisel away at, but nonetheless a core component of my personality that I cling to. Right now, though, there is a question that sends me into an uncharacteristic, decidedly not chill panic: have you found a dress yet?

I’m aware—world’s tiniest violin—that finding a wedding dress can be stressful. I’m not winning any sympathy or novelty awards here. But when confronted with the pressure to encapsulate your entire essence into one single dress, how can one possibly choose? I want to express a multitude of emotions that somehow feel in conflict with each other when distilled into clothing form. Sexy but soft, whimsical but practical, sleek yet complex… buying a wedding dress feels like a torturous practice in self-expression, one in which you must pigeonhole yourself into what type of bride you are and are not. Am I a Cecilie Bahnsen ballerina bride? Perhaps a bow-bedecked Sandy Liang lady? An elegant Khaite woman? A bold Bernadette character? Maybe even a Molly Goddard muse? Honestly—all of the above!

At the risk of sounding hokey, I had hoped a dress that embodied the unique facets of my personality would emerge. A tendency to buck tradition, quietly creative, a little bit romantic, not too dramatic, and with a predilection for nostalgia. But as I continue my search, no garment hits all the marks.

Of course, I could just cease my whining, pick a dress, and be done with it. But there’s the rub—I haven’t. I can’t? I can’t! In waiting for the one to grace my laptop screen and sweep me off my feet, I’ve managed to find myself three months out from my wedding with absolutely nothing to wear. (Save for the pair of Neous strappy heels that I chose a month after getting engaged. No brainer there!)

Conventional bridal rule of thumb says you should purchase your wedding dress eight to nine months out from your wedding. I got engaged in March of 2023 and will wed in August of this year, which gave me ample time to sort it out. But as timeline markers came—and went—I began to realize there was an issue. At this point, if I even stepped foot inside a bridal salon, I presume my three-month deadline would give the team a conniption.

And this isn’t procrastination, dear reader, I’ve been looking consistently for over a year now to no avail. On one recent day when my bum eye was experiencing a particularly furious set of twitches and I had to return yet another dress to UPS that didn’t work out, I did something out of character: I took to Instagram. “Do I know any other brides who put off buying their dress til the last minute because they can’t find anything they like? Just me?” The responses flooded in almost immediately.

“Literally me. Didn’t have my dress until two weeks before the day.”

“Omg yes and then everything was like ‘you need to order three months in advance’ and I was like my wedding is in 30 days…”

“I picked my shoes the night before.”

“I got something cheap and ended up tailoring it to my needs because I couldn’t find what I wanted.”

“I ordered a dress four days before my wedding that a friend picked out for me.”

“Yes. Super overwhelming. Two weeks before my wedding I wound up getting a sundress for $65 at a little shop at the end of the street. I’m still fine with the decision and I still have the dress after 13 years of marriage.”

“That was me! I got mine the month before.”

Bella Hadid Wears the Naked Dress to End All Naked Dresses

I was not alone in my mercurial attitude toward wedding dresses, so it seemed. Through a haphazard Instagram poll, I had unearthed a community of individuals who experienced similar struggles, and in doing so, felt a wave of relief, albeit fleeting. (I still need something to wear, lest we forget.)

I wouldn’t blame you for writing this kind of conundrum off as vapid. I get it—if your main problem in life is that you cannot find a wedding dress, you’ve got it pretty good. But it isn’t my main problem. It’s just one I didn’t expect I’d be dealing with. And one that, truly, very few brides talk about. I’ve heard countless tales of trying on that one mystical dress and bursting into tears because they just knew it was the one. I’m still tapping my foot for that epiphany to arrive.

Lamenting my lack of decisiveness over dinner with a friend the other evening, she responded succinctly: “It’s the dress you like in the moment.” A simple proverb, but profound enough. It’s the dress you like in the moment. Tastes evolve, silhouettes change, and as long as I like what I’m wearing in the moment, that’s fine enough.

If I look back at my wedding and look like a tulle cottagecore cupcake, so be it! The notion that a wedding dress must encapsulate who you are as a person feels antiquated. An appreciation for wearing a cute outfit surrounded by the people you love should be enough. (Something I never thought I’d need reminding of, but here we are.) Keeping this in mind, I’ll be self-imposing a deadline to choose a dress I like—in the moment—within the next few weeks. Wish me (and my eyelid) good luck.

An illustration of a mom swimming toward her daughters who are serenely floating in a lake.

Swimming with My Daughters

It was so reasonable—why couldn’t we want different things? Two could go into the water and one could stay on the shore. But I didn’t want to leave her there.

By Mary Grimm

I went swimming with my two daughters when they were both expecting babies. The three of us had gone away for the weekend, and were staying at a hotel in Port Clinton, Ohio, which was close to where we used to go on vacation when they were little. Val, the older one, had tried for a long time to get pregnant, taking somewhat heroic measures. I’d gone with her to one of her appointments to get hormone shots, which had felt strange; it reminded me of taking her to get shots when she was a kid.

Her younger sister, Sue, had got pregnant quite quickly, two months after Val. For a while, Val was annoyed by this. She didn’t say so outright, but we could tell. It had been so hard for her and so easy for her sister, and that took away some of the joy she’d felt when she and her husband found out that they had been successful.

But, by the time we went swimming, they were happy with each other again. We went to East Harbor, a long sand beach on Lake Erie. The water is always relatively shallow—you have to go some distance out to reach a swimmable depth. From there, you can see the length of the peninsula, divided half a mile away by a break wall. You get a sense of the lake as a great flat plain of water; it seems a little reckless to have set out into it. But, when you reach the point where you can’t touch the bottom with your toes, you feel brave.

The day we went swimming was a warmish summer day. Not cold, but not the kind of blistering-hot weather that makes you long for the water. The night before, we’d lounged in the frigid air-conditioning of our hotel, watching I don’t remember what on television. Maybe an ancient sitcom. Or maybe it was one of the movies we’d seen when my daughters were younger, when we used to go to the movies several times a month, because there was a cheap theatre near us. “Pretty in Pink” or “The Goonies.” Or maybe “Silver Bullet.” The trailer for that had seemed pretty funny, but then, in the first five minutes, someone was eviscerated in a blood-spattering rush—no, we wouldn’t have watched that again. We had gone to eat dinner at the restaurant next door to the hotel, an Italian place, where the sauce was so amazing that I persuaded the manager to sell me a couple of jars. The restaurant was old-fashioned, dark, with leather-upholstered booths and waitresses who called everyone “honey.”

We would have gone swimming on Saturday, with one more night together ahead of us. This was a kind of artificial togetherness, reaching back to when we’d been just the three of us. I got married at nineteen and then got pregnant immediately, and was often conscious of how much I didn’t know about being a mother. I’d never even babysat. The nurses at the Army hospital where Val was born had to show me how to put her cloth diaper on. (I was terrified that I’d stick her with the outsized safety pin.) Sometimes, when my daughters were little, I said things like “Stop that right now,” or “Apologize to your sister,” and the classic “I’m going to turn this car around”—as if they were lines in a play I’d found myself in. And sometimes I danced with them in the dining room while our record player boomed out Van Halen, the three of us moving like crazy things and jumping every time David Lee Roth sang out “Jump!,” so that the floor quaked under us.

There were people at East Harbor, but not many. It was that time in August when people get tired of the beach—been there, done that—so it was easy to find a place off by ourselves. We spread our blankets under the trees—this was for me, because I burn easily, whereas neither of them does. I don’t know what kind of tree they were—tall, a little raggedy, their leaves that dusty, depleted green of late summer. The wind was blowing and the leaves rustled. There were waves, but they were subdued, each with its delicate edge of foam. The sand was hot in the sun but cool in the shade. We must have had snacks, because we come from a family that firmly believes in snacks. Maybe we had a sleeve of Fig Newtons or Oreos. Possibly some grapes, for health, or small bags of chips.

We had our bathing suits on under our clothes. I took off my shirt and shorts right away, and so did Val. Sue said, “I don’t think I’ll go in.”

“Oh, no, you have to,” I said.

She said it was too cold, and it was so funny and endearing to hear her say this, something she’d said so many times before. She was the one who was always too cold, and Val was the one who never wanted to wear her winter coat. Once, when they were in high school, Val called and wanted me to pick them up from school, so that they wouldn’t have to wait for the bus in the subfreezing temperature. I said no, because I didn’t believe it was that cold, and maybe because I was doing the thing that parents sometimes do, protecting those last few minutes of private time before their beloved children burst in. And, anyway, I might have said to myself, Val never gets cold. She informed me later that she hadn’t been all that cold but that her sister’s knees were knocking together, her bare legs red with chill under her Catholic-high-school-uniform skirt. It had been Sue who was cold, not her.

And now, at the beach, Val was ready to go in, but Sue hadn’t taken off her sweatshirt. “You have to come in,” I said again.

She said that she’d wait for us on the beach.

“But you’ll be lonely,” I said.

“I’ll be fine.” She patted her hands on the sand, as if to show how content she’d be, how settled in on the biscuit-colored shore under the rustling trees, sitting on her red-and-white-striped beach towel. “I’ve got a book.”

It was so reasonable—why couldn’t we want different things? She was an adult. Two could go into the water and one could stay on the shore, two immersed, one lying on sand. But I didn’t want to leave her there.

Both of my daughters could be difficult to persuade. When they used to fight (by this time, they mostly didn’t), there was name-calling, sometimes minor violence. Val became cold and cutting, Sue hot and emotional. I navigated these altercations ineptly, just wanting to get to the place where everyone cooled down and things could go back to normal, to the place where we could dance in the dining room again or go to Honey Hut and have ice cream for dinner. I was not a skilled parental negotiator. “Say you’re sorry,” I’d say (or maybe yell). Val would always refuse. “But I’m not sorry,” she’d say. “It wouldn’t be honest.” Sue would always cry. She’d shut herself into her closet and put her feet up against the door so that I couldn’t get in to berate or console her.

I should have thought of all this turmoil as evidence that they were figuring out who they were, that they were growing up, becoming their own women. But I hated it so much when they fought. My sister and I had done the same (I had given her a black eye once, semi-accidentally), but those fights had seemed necessary and unavoidable to me. I’d had to assert myself; I’d had to oppose her. When Val and Sue fought, though, I couldn’t be rational. I wanted them to love each other as much as I loved them, all the time, forever.

But I could never get Val to say she was sorry, and I could never get Sue to come out of the closet. Could I get her to come into the water and swim?

“You have to,” I said again, as if repetition were the key, as if it would wear her down, out of boredom, if nothing else.

I didn’t stop to ask myself why it was so important.

I wasn’t ready to be a mother when I got pregnant, although probably no one is, really. But the girls’ father and I hadn’t planned it or even thought of it. We’d been together for about a year and a half and, for a lot of that time, had been in different cities, first because I left college (O.K.—I was kicked out) and he stayed, and then because he joined the Marines to avoid the draft (it made sense at the time). On the day of our wedding, in 1969, we hadn’t seen each other for two months because he’d been in boot camp. We got married in the morning and made love between the ceremony and the reception. I didn’t take off my wedding dress, because it was too complicated, and we didn’t even think of using protection, because (and I know this is shocking, not to mention stupid) we never had before. Don’t ask me to explain, because I can’t. It was as if I thought pregnancy couldn’t happen if you didn’t want it to. Or that it only happened to other people. In my defense, sex ed at the time wasn’t very informative, especially if you went to Catholic school.

Almost certainly I got pregnant on our honeymoon, maybe even on my wedding day, and nine months later Val was born to a pretty naïve and ill-informed twenty-year-old. We were then in Huntsville, Alabama, near Redstone Arsenal, where my husband was learning how to use radar technology. All of our friends were marines, and almost all of them were single. It was strange enough that we were married, but that I was pregnant and then produced a baby was exotic and maybe disturbing. None of our friends back home were married, either. We were outliers, and there was no one I could talk things over with.

I remember being alone with Val in the double house we rented in Huntsville, in the room where the three of us slept. It was the middle of the day and my husband was gone, on the base being a marine. It wasn’t terribly hot yet, so it was probably May, a month after Val was born, her arrival announced by an Army doctor in blood-stained scrubs. The room was full of light, her little wooden crib against the back wall, where the head of our bed used to be. (We’d had to rearrange the furniture to accommodate all the baby paraphernalia.) I was sitting on the bed and Val was crying because, as I later found out, she had colic. Which was normal, but I didn’t know it. I had done all the things, but she wouldn’t stop, and then, finally, she did. She fell asleep and the silence was profound, almost frightening. My body was still torn and scarred from childbirth. My hair was long. I was still wearing maternity jeans. I realized, profoundly and for the first time, that I had no idea what I was doing. I could read Dr. Spock from cover to cover and I would still be in the dark.

The beach at East Harbor is part of a state park. My sister and I went there when we were kids, and I took Val and Sue when they were little. We’d been going long enough that we could say things like “The beach used to be wider” or “Remember when there was a big slide here?” It’s, for us, a homey beach. We know where to turn off the road, when to slow down to fifteen m.p.h. on the drive to the parking lot, where to look for water lilies. We can remember the old changing area, walled in but open to the sky; it was a particular pleasure when stepping out of your bathing suit to stand there in the sun, naked for a few seconds, then rush to get dressed before someone came in and saw you. One of us would always want to go a little farther along the beach and another would complain, “What’s wrong with right here?” We knew that it was shallow until you got almost to the breakwater. We knew the way the wave-made ridges of sand felt, hard against the soles of our feet.

The three of us were alone, but it was almost as if the rest of our family were there, too, the living and the dead. My mother and my aunts in their ancient, faded bathing suits. My father in the terry-cloth beach jacket that he wore over his trunks. Our cousin who could do cartwheels and our other cousins who used to live in South Africa. Our grandmother who wore a dress to the beach and never went into the water. Almost there, but not. It was just us three, plus the half children, started but not yet born.

“You have to come in the water,” I said again, and Sue said again that the water was too cold. “You have to,” I said.

And she said, “Why?”

I felt that it was important, although I couldn’t explain why. There was a little bit of teasing in it, Val and me teaming up against her, family harassment, which was something that happened with the three of us now and again. The two of them against me, Sue and me against Val—all the possible configurations of three women living together, with me, the mom, trying to keep fairness in mind. Equal portions, equal time spent. (Even now, as I write, I’m thinking about how to keep this piece equal, balanced between the two of them.) For a while, when we lived on the top of a ratty double house in Cleveland, I had back problems, and they took turns sleeping on my mattress on the floor while I slept in one of their beds. We’d been balancing and unbalancing one another all of their lives.

But, also, that Val and I would go into the water and leave Sue on her towel seemed unthinkable. When we looked at the horizon, she wouldn’t be seeing it with us. When one of us thought she saw a fish swimming in the murk of the lake water, Sue wouldn’t be there to shriek and splash. I didn’t want to watch her getting smaller and smaller as we went farther out, just a smudge on the sand, no way to tell if she was looking at us or not.

“Come on,” I said, and Val said to Sue, “You know she’s not going to let it go.”

Sue made a face at us. She was still wearing her T-shirt over her bathing suit, but she hadn’t opened her book, and I thought she might be close to giving in.

When Sue was little, I called her Baby instead of using her name. “Here are our kids,” I’d say, “Valerie and Baby,” until she started kindergarten and became known as Susan, named for my sister. Did she even know her name before then? It’s hard to say. Also, because she was born with very fine, almost invisible blond hair, strangers tended to think she was a boy. Nameless and wrong-gendered, she was the more cheerful and friendly of the two of them (and still is), but, if you pushed her too far, she could be very stubborn. She was also more prone to accidents than Val, some that were her own fault, as when she stuck a hard orange berry from one of the tree-lawn trees up her nose. (It had to be removed by a doctor.) When they were kids, she followed her sister around, followed her into grade school and then high school, and, later, she followed her down to southeast Ohio, where she worked for a while at a canoe livery that belonged to her sister and brother-in-law. Both sisters still live down there, across the street from each other on a country road in the shelter of a hill.

When Val first moved there, for school, I thought that it would be temporary, that eventually she’d move back to Cleveland. But she met her husband there and, before we knew it, Sue and I were down there for her wedding, Sue the maid of honor in a blue-flowered, mid-calf Laura Ashley dress. On the afternoon before the wedding, Sue and I were at the house Val was renting, and, for some reason now forgotten, we all three lay down on Val’s iron-bedstead bed and talked for a while. They both fell asleep, but I stayed awake. A few hours before, I had been cutting up watermelon for fruit salad—to be served at the wedding breakfast the next day—spooning up the juice, sipping bourbon, getting maudlin, while my daughters had gone off to borrow folding chairs from a funeral home whose owner was a friend of Val’s future father-in-law. My head felt soft and impressionable.

I lay there between the two of them, sweating a little in the July heat, worried about the poem I was supposed to recite in honor of the bride and groom at the ceremony. Typically, I wasn’t thinking about the consequences, how things would be after the wedding. How Sue and I would go home alone. How Val would never live with us again. How she would have her own home. From where I lay on the bed, I could see the house next door, its brick wall and white-shuttered window, which hid a bedroom like the one I was in but utterly unknown to me. I was hardly thinking at all. I was listening to my daughters breathe, just as I used to when they were babies and I’d open the door of their bedroom to see if they were asleep.

The next day, Val got married. The three of us, along with the girls’ cousin and half sister, fixed our hair in front of a triple mirror in the upstairs room of the Victorian house where the future in-laws lived. The mirrors reflected and refracted us, taking the sunlight and shooting it into the corners, Val looking unexpectedly fragile in her white and lace. The guests sat on the funeral chairs set out on the grass. It was the day before the Fourth of July, the sharp smell of early fireworks hanging in the air. I decorated the cake with fresh flowers, and a ten-year-old cousin got hold of the video camera, filming people’s feet and the dogs running away to hide in the garage. At one point, Sue and I sat on the back stairs of our motel and cried—something that we didn’t tell Val until years later.

“Just try it,” I said. “It’s not that cold.”

Val and I each pulled on one of Sue’s arms, and she rose reluctantly.

Val was barely showing. Her waist had thickened a little, that period of pregnancy when it looks as if you might have gained an extra five pounds. Sue didn’t show at all. They were still wearing their regular bathing suits. The sun was in and out of the clouds, so that the water sometimes gleamed and sometimes was dull.

There was a period of time, after I got divorced from their father, when we didn’t have much money. I was going to school on a patchwork of government money and what I made working part time at a convenience store. It was Christmas Eve, and they were asleep in the bedroom of our apartment at the top of the double house. We had almost no furniture, no appliances except an ancient, wheezing refrigerator, a hot plate, and a toaster oven. We had a couch that belonged to the landlord and a rocker, a vintage kitchen table, and three chairs. The windows rattled and shook when the wind blew.

I was wrapping presents in the dim light of the TV. It may have been the first Christmas after the divorce and I may have been feeling gloomy and lonely. The wrapping paper was stiff and crackly, and I didn’t have enough tape. I had to use tiny pieces so that I would have enough to wrap the gifts. The ribbon looped and spooled across the carpet. The movie that was on the TV was “A Christmas Carol,” an old version with a Scottish actor, Alastair Sim. He peered out of the TV screen with a look of cunning and fear, his white hair floating around his bald skull. I didn’t watch it to the end, because I didn’t want to see him being happy, sending the prize turkey to Bob Cratchit’s house, and then dancing the polka at his nephew’s Christmas party. I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to conjure up that happiness for the three of us, that I wouldn’t have enough to give.

I guess I wanted Sue to come into the water because I so wanted to give it to her, the experience of it, just as years before I’d held four-month-old Val up to the plane window to show her the Rocky Mountains, to give them to her. They had seemed close, close enough that we could see the green pine trees against the backdrop of ruffled layers of cloud. In the same way, I wanted to give Sue the lake, and also the three of us in it. Here is the lake, I wanted to say, and it is deep and murky. Its dark greenness stretches to where it meets the sky. It’s unknowable, but still we know it.

“Come on,” I said again. There was a frill of seaweed just above the waterline, and we stepped over it delicately. I went into the water to set a good example, standing ankle-deep while Val splashed out ahead. “See, it’s not cold,” I said, although, frankly, it was.

Sue walked in, frowning. She didn’t bother to answer me. We went into the lake, stepping quickly, for if we stood in one place too long our feet started to sink into the sand. Sue wrapped her arms around herself as if against a gale. She stopped when the water was just above her knees, looking stubborn, and I was afraid she was going to insist on going back.

Her stubbornness is one of the things I love about her, although it sometimes made things difficult when she was a child. It helped her survive a year of grade school with a teacher who bullied her. It has helped her weather disappointments and difficulties, those parts of life we all have, some of which were still in her future. Her stubbornness helped her stand up to Val’s big-sister tyranny and the benevolent oppression of my mothering. She got good at separating herself, just enough, in small ways, as when, after graduating from college, she brought back the towels she’d used in her campus apartment and was miffed when I put them in the linen closet: they were hers, not ours. I hadn’t realized there were some things that weren’t ours anymore.

I flopped into the water, full immersion, although my usual way is to mince in inch by inch, and splashed her, mostly accidentally, which made her shriek.

“You might as well get in all the way,” Val said. Her hair was wet and slicked away from her face. “You don’t want us to have to tell the baby that their mom was a wuss, do you?”

I ducked my head in the water and popped up between them. “Do you remember when the two of you wanted to swim to Mouse Island?” I said. “And when Sue lost her ring in the sand? Remember when those boys followed us back from the beach and wouldn’t leave? Remember how Aunt Millie used to pretend to swim when she was kneeling in shallow water?” Yes, I sounded desperate, but Sue wasn’t turning back, and maybe she was smiling a little.

I went hiking the day that Val was born and thought for quite some time that the labor pains were indigestion from eating too many potato pancakes. Her birth turned into an emergency, and she was cut from me in a flow of blood. Sue’s birth was planned, a date set. I packed a book for the hospital and read about continental drift the night before, imagining the slow movement of the Earth, its crust wrinkling and scarring. Both times, I thought I knew what I was doing, and both times I was surprised when things took their own way. When Val turned her judgmental stare on me for the first time, I was helpless, and, again, when Sue smiled as if I were the only thing she’d ever want to see.

On that sultry afternoon, half clouded, half sunlit, we moved out into the lake, finally, the deeper water by the stones of the breakwater, half floating, half swimming, and I was so happy that Sue had come out with us, so happy that we were together, that it could still sometimes be only the three of us. Just as when Val got married, I wasn’t thinking ahead, because of course it was more than the three of us—we were five, two of us swimming in their personal bodies of water, not big enough to kick, not ready yet to breathe. I didn’t quite realize that we were all three mothers now. I wasn’t prepared to know that yet, to know it in a tangible way. But it didn’t matter. The gulls flew over us screaming, and we inhabited the lake the way we always had. Our legs churned up a froth of bubbles, and we watched the sun track across the sky until we were water-tired, heavy-limbed, ready to go back to the shore, where we lay on the sand and ate Oreos, and where we caught sight of a water spout, over to the east, twisting and dancing by Marblehead Peninsula. ♦

me and my friend essay

I feel very blessed to have had a baby at my age, but something that has eluded me is female friendships.

I live in a rural area, but I know that’s not really the problem.

I long to have a trustworthy friend.

My only friend died over two years ago, and since then I’ve been fooled by women who later turned on me.

I’ve always had more guy friends than women friends, but most of those friendships with guys never worked out, as they had ulterior motives.

Are there any online sites I could look to for friends?

I’m warm, friendly, and caring.

I know social media glamorizes people’s lives, but I see women every day with loving and close friendships.

It makes me feel even more like an outsider.

Are some of us made to have few or zero friendships?

– Friendless

Dear Friendless: Modern media meant to celebrate women’s friendships tends to characterize gal pals as bonding over cocktails and sharing late-night confessionals, but most actual human beings do not behave in such tidy and agreeable ways. Friendship can be messy, but it is a relationship to treasure.

I don’t think you are “made to have zero friendships,” but you are the common denominator for all of your relationships. According to you, most men have ulterior motives; women fool you and then turn on you.

It would be useful for you to review your own past patterns of behavior to see if there are ways you could rewrite your friendship future. Your only friend has died. Your grief over this loss might be a factor in how you perceive others, now.

It is easier to use the internet to meet a stranger for a hookup than it is to find a friendship, but social media sites like Facebook and Instagram can be a good place to start, because you can find people who live near you and who might share common interests. You can also witness how people react to others. Are their comments kind and supportive? Are their interests or hobbies similar to yours? If so, they might be good friendship material.

You should also try to meet other women who have young children. Many of these women might be substantially younger than you, but your unique situation: “I have grandchildren who are older than my toddler!” is a potentially great conversation starter.

I have often recommended meetup.com as a great way to find things to do (and people to do these things with). Check within your ZIP code to see if you can join an activity or club. I hope you click with a new friend soon.

Dear Amy: I’ve been with my girlfriend for eight months. Most of the time, we’re really happy. I believe we are very well suited for each other. We have common interests and our values seem to be in sync.

Here’s the problem: It seems like any time we disagree, she very quickly says things like, “If you don’t want to be here, why don’t you just leave?”

In my opinion, this is completely disproportionate. I don’t ever know how to respond. I wonder if you can give me some ideas for how to deal with this.

– Lost Guy

Dear Lost: It sounds as if your girlfriend is displaying her deepest fear as a way to control the narrative. This might be as a result of how her family of origin deals with conflict (perhaps she feels abandoned by her father or another important family member).

She does not want to argue or disagree, because she doesn’t know how.

Learning how to engage in conflict is ultimately a path to greater intimacy.

You two can start this important work by reading the latest book by researchers Julie Schwartz Gottman and John Gottman: “Fight Right: How Successful Couples Turn Conflict Into Connection” (2024, Harmony).

Read this book together, and practice resolving your conflicts peacefully.

Dear Amy: I believe you might have missed something with your response to “No Longer Lonely in Long Island.” This guy said he had fallen in love with another woman, and now he resents his wife calling him an adulterer.

You called him out as an adulterer, but he never reported having sex with this other woman – only falling in love.

– Avid Reader

Dear Reader: Given that he was leaving and divorcing his wife to be with this other woman, I think I made a good call.

  • Abigail Van Buren

Dear Abby: My husband and I recently moved to a new city. I have made friends here, and we have great neighbors. I have become close with several of the women, but my husband has not made any buddies. When I try to create opportunities for him to get closer to the guys, he reacts by saying, “How dare you!” or “What makes you think I need help?”

When I want some girl time with my friends, he gets mad and accuses me of not wanting him around and excluding him from my life. I can’t seem to make him understand that women need girl time for our own mental health, and it is not about him. Help, please!

-- Sad and Trapped

Dear Sad: Most women need women friends, so please don’t isolate yourself in an attempt to placate your husband. If he thinks that by hanging around with you and your women friends he is filling what’s missing in his social life, he needs a wake-up call. Whether you want him around during those visits or not, the feelings of the other women should be considered.

Did your husband have male friends in your former town? I suspect not, which may be why he continues to be so dependent on you now. Unless he is willing to make the effort, you can’t fix his social problems. Encouraging him to develop hobbies and interests of his own may help, and volunteering in your new community might introduce him to other men he can bond with. Please suggest it.

Dear Abby: I think my husband is poisoning me

Dear Abby weighs in on a woman who believes her husband may be poisoning her.

DEAR ABBY: My husband and I have been married for 30 years but have never really been happy with each other. For years I have had painful skin infections on my face, which have required trips to multiple dermatologists. They have done biopsies, and they still can’t pinpoint the cause of my skin problems.

Recently, because one of my infections was spreading to my sinus cavity and my eye, I moved out of the master bedroom into one of the kids’ old rooms. My skin is clearing up now, and I’m pain-free.

I always suspected that my husband might have had something to do with this, plus I found a book he had about wild mushrooms. In it, he had underlined a part that said mushrooms are parasitic. What do you think, Abby? — SUSPICIOUS IN FLORIDA

DEAR SUSPICIOUS: I think you should discuss this with the doctors who have been trying to diagnose the cause of your repeated infections. If you are correct in your suspicions, you should talk to the police because your husband may be guilty of assault with intent to harm you. This may be your chance to end your long, unhappy marriage. Do not return to the master bedroom until this matter has been resolved to your satisfaction.

DEAR ABBY: I have been married for 42 years. Three months ago, I started seeing changes in my husband’s behavior. He had lost two good friends within two months, so I attributed it to that.

Then one day, he asked me to look up something on his phone and that’s when I saw text messages between him and a girl named “Ginger” who works for him, inviting her to come to the shop every night to have a beer. Of course she never said no. She also would text him looking for him if he couldn’t make it, telling him she would miss him.

My husband is 60; Ginger is 30. He also tells me he also has a woman friend (also 30) who works at a local business. He has confided personal family business to her that I know she has shared with other people.

I’m at a loss. I’m retired but I’m always ready to go and do anything with him. I have supper ready when he gets home after spending an extra hour with Ginger every night. What can I do to bring my husband home to me? I take care of myself, always look my best and listen when he talks. — WHAT TO DO IN THE EAST

DEAR WHAT TO DO: This may have nothing to do with you and everything to do with your husband’s fear of his own mortality. In light of the fact that he has just lost two close friends in the last three months, he may find the company of these young women to be a distraction. That said, what he’s doing is disrespectful to you and possibly a threat to your marriage.

Have you discussed how this has made you feel? If you haven’t, you should. You appear to be trying your best to do your part, but you can’t fix this alone. It may be time for you to start concentrating less on what pleases him and more on what is good for you. And while you’re at it, begin monitoring his/your financial records to see if there have been any “out of the ordinary” expenditures. If there have been, it may be time to consult a lawyer.
