Step 5: Reconnect your Kindle with your Bluetooth device and check if the problem is solved.

Another reason the VoiceView Screen Reader is not working might be the low battery levels on your Kindle. We suggest charging it and checking back later to see if the problem is solved. Refer to our post if your Kindle is not charging .

If the problem continues, you might have to install a new Kindle software update. Here’s how to check for one.

Step 1: Tap the down arrow at the top of the Kindle screen to reveal more options. Then, select All Settings.

Step 2: Tap the three vertical dots in the top-right corner and select Update Your Kindle .

If the option is greyed out, your Kindle is already running on the latest software version.

You can also refer to our post if your Kindle is not allowing you to save your highlights while reading ebooks.

Amazon Kindle (2022) review: The e-reader for most

The amazon kindle (2022) gets a refresh worth every penny.

Amazon Kindle (2022) held close to the camera to show the login screen

Tom's Guide Verdict

The Amazon Kindle (2022) gets an upgraded 300 ppi display and USB-C charging while staying below $100. While it’d be nice if it was waterproof, this is now the e-reader most readers should choose.

Lightweight, comfortable design

Bright, crisp display

Incredible battery life

Not waterproof

Lacks warm display light options

Why you can trust Tom's Guide Our writers and editors spend hours analyzing and reviewing products, services, and apps to help find what's best for you. Find out more about how we test, analyze, and rate.

Price: $99 Display size: 6-inch Resolution (pixels per inch): 300 ppi Storage: 16GB Battery life: 6 weeks (claimed) Dimensions: 6.2 x 4.3 x 0.32 inches Weight: 5.56 ounces Ports: USB-C

Amazon didn’t need to reinvent the wheel with the Kindle 2022 ($99). E-readers can have all the bells and whistles they want, but in the end they have one job: to allow you to read. Well, more accurately, allow you to read a collection of books comfortably, all on one device.

So it was a pleasant surprise when Amazon decided to refresh the Kindle in a noticeable way. This latest version’s e-ink display got upgraded to a 300 pixels per inch (PPI) resolution and Amazon swapped the old micro-USB charging input for USB-C.

There are still enough differences to make the Kindle Paperwhite the superior choice. The new Kindle 2022 is still not waterproof and it lacks the softer display lighting options of its more expensive counterpart. It’s also smaller, but whether or not that is better or worse is subjective. If you want a Kindle and don’t care about it being waterproof, the $40 cheaper price point makes the Kindle 2022 the better value for most readers.

Amazon Kindle (2022): Price and configurations

Amazon Kindle (2022) held in hand at a desk while open to an ebook page of text

If you’re someone who gets overwhelmed by choices, then I have good news. The Amazon Kindle 2022 comes in just a single 16GB model for $99. There are two color options though: Black or Denim. So if you want a little choice you’re covered there too. I tested the Black model and it was nice, though fingerprints did show up on the Kindle where I handled it.

Amazon Kindle (2022)

Some may complain that the price went up $10 versus the $89 price point of the Amazon Kindle (2019), but at least you get something for that price increase. Between the upgraded resolution and the switch to USB-C, Amazon did at least make some improvements that could justify a price hike.

Amazon Kindle (2022): Design

The Amazon Kindle has always had a relatively simple design, and that has not changed with this latest iteration. The 6.2 x 4.3 x 0.32-inch Kindle (2022) is slightly smaller than the Kindle (2019), but you probably wouldn't notice. It remains comfortable to hold, and at 5.56 ounces it’s even easier to bring with you anywhere.

Amazon Kindle (2022)

It also remains a no-frills device in terms of extra physical features. Aside from a power button and the USB-C charging port, there’s nothing else. To be fair, there isn’t really a need for anything else. Some people like to have physical page-turn buttons, but personally, I don’t view the lack of those as a negative.

The only design change I would advocate for is upgrading the chassis for the Kindle to be IPX8 waterproof resistance rated. I think that Amazon could accomplish this without undercutting the more expensive Amazon Kindle Paperwhite, which still offers improved lighting options and a larger size than the base 2022 Kindle.

Amazon Kindle (2022): Display

One of the biggest complaints about the previous iteration of the Kindle in our review was the mediocre display resolution. While the Amazon Kindle 2019 upgraded the display by adding four front lights, which allow for a better and more energy-efficient reading experience, it still featured a relatively low resolution at just 167 ppi. That's fine for reading, but noticeably below the resolution of the rest of the Kindle lineup.

Amazon Kindle (2022)

Now, Amazon is fixing that with the Kindle (2022). This Kindle has an upgraded 300 ppi 6-inch display that felt incredibly comfortable for this former Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (3rd generation) user. The e-ink grayscale display looked fantastic and was easy to read.

The biggest complaint I had was that I found the light to be a bit harsher than the warmer tones you can get on the Paperwhite. However, I found with a little tinkering — and turning on the Kindle 2022’s dark mode — I was able to land on an enjoyable display experience.

Amazon Kindle (2022): User experience and features

The Kindle user experience is pretty simple, and I found it easy to use and intuitive. When the Kindle boots up, you’re presented with a home page that displays some selections from your library and recommendations from Amazon. There’s also a search bar to allow you to just search for content directly from the home page.

At the bottom there’s also a “Library” tab that shows everything you have in your Kindle library. You can filter this library by using the filters icon located directly under the search bar, which is great if you’re in the mood for something you haven’t read yet or searching for an Audible audiobook.

Amazon Kindle (2022)

Speaking of Audible, you can listen to your Audible audiobooks on the Kindle using Bluetooth. I found it easy to connect my headphones to the Kindle, but be warned — it may be loud at first. Make sure to set your volume using the Settings pull-down menu (drag your finger down from the top of the screen to access) once you’re connected. The volume slider only appears with Bluetooth connected.

Finally, our past reviews have spoken at length about the awfulness that is Goodreads, Amazon’s widely-disliked social network for recommending books. Unfortunately, it hasn’t entirely gone away. While I’ve had a largely Goodreads-free experience, when you open a new book there is an annoying “About this book” pop-up that appears. While technically not a Goodreads feature, it’s still an annoying distraction that the Kindle could do without. Still, overall Amazon largely didn’t overwhelm me with distractions, so it's a vast improvement over some of the previous Kindles in that regard.

Amazon Kindle (2022): Battery life

While the 6-week battery life of the Amazon Kindle 2022 is less than the Kindle Paperwhite’s 10-week, it’s more than enough. Amazon claims that the Kindle can hit six weeks on a single charge based on 30 minutes of reading a day with Wi-Fi off and the brightness set at 13. Using the Audible audiobook streaming feature over Bluetooth will reduce battery life below this figure.

Amazon Kindle (2022)

While I have not tested the battery life of the Kindle as rigorously as Amazon has (I haven’t even had 6 weeks to try and drain the battery) I can tell you so far I’ve been impressed. I’ve been using it for a while now and still have not had to charge it. While it may fall short of the six weeks Amazon promises, it won’t be by much.

Amazon Kindle (2022): Content

Content is both a major advantage and disadvantage of the Kindle ecosystem. Amazon Kindles, of course, have access to the massive Kindle Store and its millions of books. You also get access to Audible audiobooks, which as mentioned you can listen to using Bluetooth. If you have an Amazon Prime account, you can even download a free eBook a month from a selection of new books curated by Amazon. You even get free cloud storage for all Amazon content.

Amazon Kindle (2022)

Unfortunately, alongside offering this wealth of content Amazon does everything it can to lock you out of other ecosystems. The Kindle can download eBooks from your public library through the Overdrive service, but other services (like Hoopla, which works on Kindle Fire tablets) don’t work on the Kindle 2022. And if you have Google Books eBooks, those won’t work either.

Amazon Kindle (2022): Verdict

The Amazon Kindle (2022) is nearly a perfect device for what it is, and some of its flaws are more down to Amazon than the device itself. Being locked into Amazon’s ecosystem is a drag, but you can’t really knock the Kindle for that.

That’s not to say there aren’t improvements that could be made. The fact that the Kindle 2022 isn’t waterproof is probably the biggest reason that I couldn’t rate it above four stars, and the ability to adjust the warmth of the display light is something I sorely miss from the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (2021) — though if you’re fine with using dark mode it’s easy to move past that shortcoming. Admittedly, if Amazon fixed those things there would be no reason to get the Paperwhite, so while I’m disappointed, I’m not shocked.

Ultimately though, the Kindle 2022 is probably the best Kindle for most people, dethroning the Paperwhite when both are at full price. It’s lightweight and comfortable to hold, the display is bright and crisp — a massive improvement — and the battery lasts for ages. Unless you really need a waterproof Kindle, it’s tough to advocate spending more than the $99.99 for the Amazon Kindle 2022.

The new entry-level Kindle is the one to buy

Amazon’s new kindle shares many of the features that make the kindle paperwhite terrific, including a sharp screen and usb-c support, but for $40 less.

I almost feel tempted to call Amazon’s latest base-model Kindle “the mini Paperwhite” — that’s how much of a major upgrade it represents over its predecessor. After all, it has a screen as sharp as the Paperwhite’s, USB-C charging, a dark mode, and even a fully adjustable front light. At 16GB, the base model even offers more storage than the Kindle Paperwhite, which starts at 8GB. And yet, starting at $99.99 for the ad-supported model and $119.99 for the ad-free version , it’s about $40 less. While it doesn’t boast all the features that make the Kindle Paperwhite so great — like waterproofing or an adjustable color temperature for its front light — it’s an otherwise terrific entry-level e-reader.

It’s the screen that first caught my eye. Whereas on the previous base-model Kindle, the display was so disappointing our complaints took up half of the review , this time, it is one of its best features. At 300dpi, the new Kindle’s display offers nearly twice the pixel density as its predecessor’s 167ppi resolution. For somebody who dons glasses, that sharper display made reading for longer periods of time easier. It helped, as well, that you can adjust the layout so you can, say, increase space between lines or margins in addition to text size, font, and more.

A hand holding the Kindle and displaying a menu with options to change the orientation, alignment, spacing, and margins.

You can also quite comfortably read the new Kindle in all kinds of lighting. Amazon claims the Kindle is glare-free, and for the most part, the display is clear enough to read even while directly under the sun. While there was some reduction in contrast and sharpness levels, it doesn’t significantly interfere with the reading experience. Unfortunately, the Kindle lacks the Kindle Paperwhite’s adjustable warm light, which makes pages look a little more like real paper, and is front-lit with only four LEDs as opposed to 17. Nevertheless, that was bright enough for my needs, and while it would have been nice to adjust the screen’s warmth at night, the dark mode was still helpful in reducing the strain on my eye.

A big part of an e-reader’s magic lies in the fact that it’s a small, thin, and lightweight device that allows you to carry an entire library of books in your purse. The new Kindle does a fantastic job of performing that magic and even outshines the Kindle Paperwhite in this respect. At just 6.2 inches tall, it’s easy to slide the Kindle into your purse or pocket, whereas it’s more challenging to do that with the 6.8-inch Kindle Paperwhite. Weighing just 5.6 ounces (159 grams), it’s also light enough to forget it’s there and easy to hold with just one hand, which was something we found hard to do with the Kindle Paperwhite. It’s even lighter than some of the latest smartphones, like the iPhone 14 (6.07 ounces or 172 grams) and Google’s Pixel 7 (6.95 ounces or 197 grams), making it easy to hold for long reading sessions.

A hand holding the Kindle, which is turned on and in dark mode.

Strangely, the Kindle also starts at 16GB of storage, which is double what the base Kindle Paperwhite offers — in fact, you’d have to pay $10 extra for that amount of storage. Given ebooks barely take up much space, that gives you room for a ton of audiobooks and other content as well, so you can truly carry around an entire library of content.

You probably won’t need to worry too much about scratching the screen while carrying it about, either. So far, I have found no scratches on the display, even when I accidentally dropped the Kindle onto the tiled kitchen floor. Unfortunately, though, the bezels framing the screen have not remained free of scratches and fingerprints. It’s not something that directly interferes with the reading experience, but you’ll likely want a case to protect the Kindle. That’s especially true given it’s not waterproof like the Kindle Paperwhite, nor does it offer the $249.99 Kindle Oasis’ physical page turn buttons you can turn to in the event the screen gets damaged.

  • Amazon’s Kindle Scribe is an E Ink tablet for reading and writing

Battery life and USB-C support are other areas where the new Kindle outperforms its predecessor. The new Kindle’s USB-C makes it easy to charge faster than its predecessor, which only offered micro USB support. Amazon claims you should be able to charge it in four hours from your computer with the USB capable or within two hours if you use a 9-watt USB power adapter. I was able to charge the Kindle from my laptop from 55 percent to 100 percent within slightly less than two hours, which is actually slightly better than Amazon’s estimates.

According to Amazon, the Kindle’s battery life is better and should last up to six weeks based on 30 minutes of reading an ebook a day, Wi-Fi off, and the light setting at 13. That’s not as long as the Kindle Paperwhite’s, but it’s still good. I haven’t used the Kindle for six weeks, but I did notice the battery dropped roughly by about 5 percent after every 30-minute reading session with Wi-Fi on the light setting at about 18 (which was the setting I found the easiest to read at night or in low-light areas). When I turned the Wi-Fi off and lowered the light setting to 14, it dropped by about 2 percent. By that calculation, I estimate the battery would last close to three weeks at half brightness with Wi-Fi on and a higher brightness level and around six weeks with Wi-Fi off and a lower light setting.

A hand holding the Kindle and displaying the main menu of the device.

Often, navigating an e-reader’s interface is a frustrating endeavor that takes more patience than I have. The Kindle isn’t exactly fast, but I didn’t feel like pulling out my hair while downloading books and turning pages, as the touchscreen was relatively quick to respond. Software updates from last year also mean the new Kindle is easy to quickly set up, which is a definite perk. Typing up credentials on an E-ink display typically takes a while, but Amazon lets you quickly share your login information from your smartphone’s Kindle app so you don’t have to. Combined with the high-resolution display, all of this made for a quick and easy setup and a better reading experience.

However, there is one downside I must remind you of when you buy a Kindle: only the ad-supported model starts at $99.99. I used the ad-free version, which costs $20 more, so I didn’t have to deal with ads on the lock screen. However, I imagine I would find constantly being bombarded by Amazon ads annoying and wonder if it would make the device more sluggish, so this is something to consider before making a purchase. After all, the Kindle exists in a market where there’s also the ad-free $99.99 Kobo Nia — though it lacks support for both Bluetooth and audiobooks and offers a lower 212dpi resolution.

Even without ads on the lockscreen, though, keep in mind Amazon will still try to sell you ebooks and audiobooks — and not discretely. The interface is fairly intuitive to navigate, and your library is easy to access from the homescreen as it’s right up at the top. Having said that, so are a bunch of other books, magazines, and other content Amazon’s constantly recommending you buy. In fact, most of the screen was cluttered with books I didn’t own, something that was confusing and made scrolling down take a little longer than I’d like. Some of these were Kindle Unlimited books, which both new and existing subscribers get four months free of when purchasing the Kindle — which admittedly is a very nice perk. But others are books you’ll have to buy from Amazon.

Amazon has finally made it easier to read books purchased from outside its store on the Kindle

Thankfully, at least, it’s much easier to read books outside of Amazon’s bookstore if you don’t want to. While purchasing Amazon books is still much faster and more intuitive, accessing ePub and a host of other files is simpler now, thanks to the new Send-to-Kindle email feature. After emailing my ePub files to the supplied Kindle email address, Amazon converted it into an Amazon-specific digital book film format the Kindle could read that quickly popped up on my device. I did have to wait about three minutes before the ebook showed up, but it’s still an incredibly welcome change, given you previously had to endure a long, complicated process involving the Calibre desktop app to read ePub files on the Kindle.

Amazon’s done a great job of improving on all of the base Kindle’s weaknesses while adding extra perks that make it even easier to read books outside of the Amazon ecosystem. As long as you don’t need a waterproof e-reader you can enjoy in the bath or a larger screen, the entry-level model offers good value for your money. For $40 less, you’ll get most of the features that made the Kindle Paperwhite terrific, like a sharp screen, USB-C support, and double the storage. Having said that, I would recommend forking over $20 for the ad-free model. It’ll still be cheaper than the Paperwhite, and given Amazon often offers discounts on its devices, it’s very possible you may be able to get it for a little less.

Agree to Continue: Amazon Kindle (2022)

Like many e-readers, Amazon’s Kindle requires you to agree to a series of terms and conditions before you can use it — contracts that no one actually reads. It’s impossible for us to read and analyze every single one of these agreements. But we started counting exactly how many times you have to hit “agree” to use devices when we review them since these are agreements most people don’t read and definitely can’t negotiate.

When you first use your Kindle, you’ll be asked to connect or create an Amazon account. When you set up or connect your Amazon account, Amazon will receive your email and billing address as well as your credit card number so you can buy and download content. You must also agree to the following terms :

  • Amazon’s Kindle Store Terms of Use
  • Amazon’s Amazon.com Conditions of Use
  • Amazon’s Amazon.com Privacy Notice
  • Amazon’s Amazon Device Terms of Use

  • Amazon’s Alexa Terms of Use
  • Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited Terms of Use (if you purchase Kindle Unlimited)

kindle paperwhite 2022 text to speech

The Big Tech Question

Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition review: is it worth the extra money?

Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition

Alongside the most recent Kindle Paperwhite, Amazon released a new model: the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition. What does the Signature Edition offer that the regular Paperwhite doesn’t? Is it worth the extra cost? Find out here in our Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition review.

Kindle Paperwhite 11th Generation: What’s new or updated?

Before we get to the Signature Edition, let’s see what’s new in this generation of the Paperwhite.

The latest 11th Generation of Kindle is also known as the Paperwhite 5 or Paperwhite 2021 (yes, yes, it’s confusing) and is the first update to this device for three years. It was a necessary refresh, as the standard Kindle had advanced to a point where there was little difference between that and the Paperwhite.

So what’s changed from the previous Paperwhite?

  • The 6in 1,072 × 1,448 pixel screen has been increased to a 6.8in 1,236 x 1,648 display
  • The screen is 10% brighter at its maximum setting
  • You can manually adjust the shade of the display from a white light to a warm amber, or schedule when the light changes
  • The memory has doubled from 512MB to 1GB
  • Battery capacity has increased from 1,500mAh to 1,700mAh. This gives up to 10 weeks of battery life, according to Amazon
  • The weight has increased 14%, from 180g to 205g
  • There is only a Wi-Fi version available, no 3G option
  • The processor has changed from NXP i.MX6 to NXP i.MX7D, which gives a 20% increase in page-turn speed
  • Finally, finally, it has a USB-C port for charging and data transfer

What’s stayed the same?

  • It remains IPX8 rated, so you can drop it in the bath or a swimming pool
  • The screen is 200dpi – despite a higher resolution, the increase in physical size means that the dpi is identical
  • Wi-Fi connectivity is still stuck firmly at Wi-Fi 4

What’s the difference between the Kindle Paperwhite and the Paperwhite Signature Edition?

There are really only four differences between the two models:

  • The 8GB of storage increases to 32GB
  • There is Qi wireless charging available
  • A light sensor automatically adjusts the light brightness
  • The weight increases by a further 5g

Are these changes worth another £50, though? The RRP of the standard Paperwhite is a penny under £130, whereas the Signature Edition is £180. Even when on sale, both usually drop by the same amount so the difference remains the same.

Unboxing the Paperwhite Signature Edition

Since the last time I bought a Kindle, Amazon has certainly scaled down the packaging – it’s much smaller and more environmentally considerate. From an outer cardboard case slides out another, this one holding the Kindle in place, along with the USB-C charging cable (a 1m USB-C to USB-A) and a small instructions booklet. The cable isn’t tied, which is great, but the Kindle itself does come in a plastic sleeve, which is disappointing.

Generally, the packaging is an improvement over past devices. I look forward to Amazon getting rid of the final piece of plastic wrap in future.

The Paperwhite 11th Generation: worth the upgrade?

Before we reach a conclusion about the Signature Edition, let’s see if the 11th Generation of Paperwhite that it’s based on is worth an upgrade from a previous model.

If you’re considering an upgrade from the previous generation, I’d say it’s not worth it. The stand-out features of the flush screen and IPX8 rating were all present before and I don’t think any of the new options are enough of a draw. The increased memory and improved processor speed isn’t noticeable (even from my previous Paperwhite, which was a few generations old). Yes, the battery life is longer but when something lasts for weeks without a recharge, a bump like this is unlikely to be a game-changer.

Which model of Kindle do you have?

The e-ink screen on the Kindle is a delight and it remains as simple to download and read a book as before. Essentially all the quintessential things that makes a Kindle a Kindle are still there.

The upgrade might be more tempting if you haven’t upgraded for a few years, when all those incremental updates will be more noticeable. Even so, my wife is using an even older version of the Paperwhite from 2015 and is more than happy to stick with it.

In my case, there was one feature of the new Paperwhite that I was grateful for – the bigger screen. In my giant hands, the older Kindles looked tiny and I struggled to find them comfortable. This new version is better, but still not great.

What’s disappointing is Amazon’s reluctance to touch the network connectivity. The Wi-Fi remains stubbornly outdated on shorter range Wi-Fi 4 and Bluetooth is a black box, with little known about what is inside the device. But this is an issue across the range, even the top-end Kindle Oasis. I’d say this is indicative of a wider issue – the Kindle always appears to be given the lightest of touches when it comes to upgrades. The fact that Amazon’s only now adding USB-C reveals how little Amazon seems to care about being on the latest hardware.

Is the Signature Edition worth the extra money?

Well, as I’ve already spoilt this conclusion by saying the standard Paperwhite isn’t worth it, it’s unlikely that I’m going to suggest an extra £50 for some wireless charging is, right? And you’d be correct.

Okay, it’s more than the charging – you also get a four-fold increase in storage and a light sensor but, no, it’s difficult to justify a 40% increase in cost for these features. And it’s probably unfair for me to single out the wireless charging too as, in my opinion, it’s the least useful of the additions. When you measure a product’s battery life in weeks, how useful is this?

If you simply must have the best possible Kindle, this is now it. Due to the ad-hoc and rather confusing way that Amazon updates its Kindles, I’d say this is now better specified than their £230 Kindle Oasis. Apart from the Oasis’s slightly larger screen and the handle on the side, the specifications of the Paperwhite Signature Edition is the same or better than the Oasis. That still doesn’t make it worth buying over the standard Paperwhite, though.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition Verdict

The best specified Kindle yet, but it’s not worth the extra money over the latest Kindle Paperwhite

  • A bump in storage from 8 to 32GB
  • Adjustable light warmth
  • £50 extra is a lot to pay for the added features
  • Wireless charging adds little

Good, helpful review! One question can this edition read the book aloud?

Back in the days when Kindles had built-in speakers, they had an experimental text-to-speech option . Now, however, for those Kindles (such as this one) which have Bluetooth headphone capability, there is a way to do this, albeit it’s intended as an accessibility feature.

There are details on using it here .

So disappointed in the Kindle Paperwhite! It does not accept digital newspaper subscriptions any longer! I can’t read my paper on the Kindle I was looking forward to reading without the glare and light reflection of my phone and tablet.

How to Use Text-to-Speech on Kindle

follow

Text-to-Speech (TTS) is one of the enhanced features that Kindle books have. This function allows your Kindle to read books to you. To access this feature, getting a TTS-enabled book is the first thing, and the second is to get a device supporting TTS.

Not all Kindle books support TTS, yet most of them do. If TTS is available for your Kindle book, you'll see " Text-to-Speech: Enabled " under the "Product details" on the product description page.

Text to Speech Enabled

Updated: Besides use Text to Speech, there are many other better ways to listen to Kindle books. Here are all the best ways: How to Listen to Kindle Books: Turn Kindle Book into Audiobook .

Here in this post I'd like to clarify how to use Text-to-Speech on a variety of Kindle devices and apps.

Part 1. Use Text-to-Speech on Kindle e-reader (older model) Part 2. Use Text-to-Speech on Kindle e-reader via VoiceView Part 3. Use Text-to-Speech on Kindle Fire Part 4. Use Text-to-Speech on Kindle for PC Part 5. Use Text-to-Speech on Kindle for iOS/Android

Part 1. Use Text-to-Speech on Kindle e-reader (older model)

Text-to-Speech is accessible on those older model e-ink Kindles that Amazon has stopped producing, namely Kindle Touch, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle 2 and Kindle DX. If you don't have any of them, you can skip this part. If you do, then access the TTS as follows.

Step 1 Open the book you want Kindle to read.

Step 2 Press the " Text " key. This key is labeled with " Aa ". If you own a Kindle Touch, just tap the top of the screen to bring up the " Menu ".

Step 3 Navigate down to " Text-to-Speech ", then select " Turn On " next to it. Then your Kindle begins to read the text aloud. Alternatively, on the Kindle Touch, tap " Turn On Text-to-Speech ". Listen with your Kindle's speaker, or through wired headphones if you prefer.

Text-to-Speech on Kindle Keyboard

Part 2. Use Text-to-Speech on Kindle e-reader via VoiceView

Technically newer Kindles do support a form of Text-to-Speech. More accurately, Amazon has brought an accessibility feature called VoiceView to Kindle e-readers; Text-to-Speech just happens to be a by-product of this feature. You can access VoiceView over Bluetooth or through the Kindle Audio Adapter.

2.1 Use VoiceView Over Bluetooth

You can use VoiceView with current e-reader models (Paperwhite 4, Oasis 2 and Kindle 8) when you connect to a Bluetooth audio device (like headphones).

Step 1 Turn on your Bluetooth device and set it to pairing mode.

Step 2 On your Kindle, navigate to " Settings ", " Accessibility " and then " VoiceView Screen Reader ".

Step 3 Toggle "VoiceView Screen Reader" on. Wait for a few seconds to hear audio VoiceView instructions to "Hold two fingers on the screen to use this audio device with VoiceView screen reader on Kindle." Once enabled, there's a tutorial and some settings become accessible.

VoiceView over Bluetooth

2.2 Use VoiceView through Kindle Audio Adapter

VoiceView also works with some old Kindle (Kindle Paperwhite 3, Kindle Oasis and Kindle Voyage), but you have to use the Kindle Audio Adapter since they don't have Bluetooth.

Step 1 Plug the Micro-USB end of the adapter into your Kindle.

Step 3 Get Started with the VoiceView tutorial.

Voyage requires one additional step to use the adapter, but it's quite simple. That is, you have to download the audio files .

Text-to-Speech on Kindle via VoiceView

To be frank, for regular folks who just want to have TTS support on their Kindles, VoiceView is really cumbersome to use. You have to navigate the Kindle with a series of swipes at double-taps. After all, VoiceView is really aimed at visually impaired users, not for regular TTS function.

Part 3. Use Text-to-Speech on Kindle Fire

Kindle Fire tablets get far better Text-to-Speech support than any e-ink Kindle has ever got, with surprisingly pleasant voices and more adjustable settings. Almost all Kindle Fire models support TTS, except the Kindle Fire 1st Generation. Here let me illustrate how to activate TTS on current models.

Step 1 Open the e-book you want to read to you.

Step 2 Tap the center of the screen, and then the menu icon in the top right corner.

Step 3 Tap " Additional Settings ", and then toggle " Text-to-Speech " on.

Step 4 In your Kindle book, tap the screen to show the progress bar, and then tap the " Play " icon to hear the content read aloud. You can also adjust reading speed by tapping the " Narration Speed " icon.

Tip : A number of extra voices can be installed to meet your preferences, including some foreign language voices. To get some of them, go to "Language" under "Settings".

Part 4. Use Text-to-Speech on Kindle for PC

Text-to-Speech is also accessible on Kindle app for Windows and Mac (OSX 10.10 or above). This can easily read out text from speech-enabled books.

Step 1 Click on the book you wish to read.

Step 2 Navigate to " Tools ", and " Start Text-to-Speech ". Then the voice begins to talk.

The Windows and Mac version of this app are similar, yet the screenshots below are taken from the former.

Part 5. Use Text-to-Speech on Kindle for iOS/Android

The native Kindle app for iOS or Android doesn't have Text-to-Speech feature normally. Still, you can use workarounds to read aloud the screen content.

5.1 Use Text-to-Speech on Kindle iOS

For an iOS device like iPhone or iPad, you can use a screen reading feature called Speak Screen, which works well with the Kindle app.

Step 1 Open " Settings " app.

Step 2 Select " General ", " Accessibility ", " Speech " and toggle " Speak Screen " on.

Step 3 Open the e-book you want read to you.

Step 4 Activate "Speak Screen" by swiping down with two fingers from the top of the screen. Once you device recognizes this gesture, it'll start reading.

Text-to-Speech Kindle iOS

5.2 Use Text-to-Speech on Kindle Android

With the Kindle app for Android, you can use Google Text-to-Speech designed to read the screen content aloud.

Step 1 Download and install the app.

Step 2 Navigate to " Settings ", "Language & Input" and then "Text-to-Speech output".

Step 3 Select " Google Text-to-Speech Engine " as your default engine.

Step 4 Open the e-book you want read to you.

Step 5 Press the " Menu " button, then select " Start Text-to-Speech ". Your device will start to read the text aloud.

Text-to-Speech Kindle Android

Though Text-to-Speech enables your Kindle to read to you, some users prefer to listen to audiobooks from Audible. Audible books brings a more immersive listening experience, for they are professionally narrated by actors, authors or well-known public figures. While Audible has its own file format with DRM protection, don't despair. Audible books can be converted to other common formats like MP3 with Audible Converter , then you can play them on almost any audio device.

Amazon Kindle Scribe Review: The Jumbo E-Reader You've Been Waiting For

The Scribe lives up to being an e-reader you can use for taking notes, sketching and marking up docs, but it's not a total slam dunk.

CNET’s expert staff reviews and rates dozens of new products and services each month, building on more than a quarter century of expertise.

Stylus-equipped touchscreen E Ink digital notepads have been around for a while, but with the arrival of Amazon's Kindle Scribe, we're suddenly seeing a lot more interest in these types of devices. The 10.2-inch Scribe is not only the largest Kindle e-reader to date, it's the first time Amazon has brought precision pen input to the Kindle line.

To be clear, the Scribe is not cheap: It costs more than the Kindle Oasis or an entry-level iPad , starting at $340 with a standard "pen" or $370 with a premium pen and 32GB of storage.

But after using the Scribe for a week, I can say it's mostly an excellent tablet-style e-reader , though there's certainly room for improvement with software and feature updates, particularly on the note-taking side of things.

Amazon Kindle Scribe

  • Text and images appear sharp on large 10.2-inch, 300 ppi display
  • Writing feels smooth and natural
  • Adjustable warm light with 35 LEDs
  • Can mark up PDFs, other docs
  • Easy to send documents to device
  • Weeks of battery life
  • Pretty weighty and pricey
  • Needs a cover with a built-in stand
  • PDF browsing could be better
  • Can't mark up Kindle e-books (or DRM-free ePub ebooks)
  • Note-taking could be more robust

The first thing you'll notice about the Kindle Scribe is that it's big -- a lot bigger than the Kindle Paperwhite. It kind of looks and feels like a jumbo Kindle Oasis minus the physical page-turn buttons and waterproofing (both the Paperwhite and Oasis are waterproof, with an IPX8 rating).

Read more : Best E-Readers of 2022

Like the Oasis, it has a flush-front design and, according to Amazon, is made of recycled aluminum and is currently the only front-lit 10.2-inch e-reader with a high-resolution 300 pixels-per-inch E ink display. A mere 5.8mm thick (0.22 inch), it weighs in at 433 grams (0.95 pound). For comparison, the Kindle Paperwhite  weighs in at 205 grams and the new upgraded baseline  Kindle (2022)  is 158 grams.

The iPad (2022) weighs a touch over a pound (477 grams), and like the iPad, you can certainly hold the Scribe in your hand, whether it's your left or right hand (the screen flips according to whether you prefer a left- or right-hand orientation). However, you're probably not going to want to do that for long periods. You'll either want to set it down on a table and prop it up at an angle with some object or, ideally, buy a folio cover that converts into a stand.

The Kindle Scribe is a lot bigger than the Kindle Paperwhite

The Kindle Paperwhite (left) and the Kindle Scribe.

If you buy one of Amazon's covers, which the Scribe adheres to magnetically, it'll cost you an extra $60 for a fabric cover or $80 for a leather version (you can also buy a Scribe and case together with one of the Scribe Essentials bundles that start at $410 and include a premium pen and power adapter). Other third-party cases are available for less (they all tend to have some sort of loop to store the pen). But Amazon's cases are attractive, slim and allow you to prop up the device at a couple of angles. It's also worth noting that the pen adheres magnetically to the side of the Scribe, even if you have a cover on it (the side of the Scribe remains exposed with Amazon cases).

Both the standard stylus and premium pens don't require power or Bluetooth connectivity and use  electro-magnetic resonance technology , so you'll never need to worry about charging them. The premium pen has an eraser (you turn the pen over and press the erase button on top of the stylus against the screen just like you would a real pencil eraser) and a programmable button for $30 more.

Kindle Scribe cover options

Amazon sells a folio cover for the Scribe that converts into a kickstand.

The review sample I received included the premium pen, which worked quite smoothly for taking handwritten notes and drawing on the screen. There's virtually no lag and it felt natural -- pretty much like writing on a piece of paper with less friction. There are five pen thicknesses to choose from as well as five thicknesses for the highlighter. Some additional pen styles would be nice, and I did have to be a little careful with how I held the pen because I accidentally hit the programmable button on a few occasions as I was writing or doodling (I write left-handed).

But if you're at all interested in the premium pen, it's best to buy it with the Scribe because it's $60 ($30 more) if you buy it separately. The pen tips are replaceable, Amazon says.

Large, crisp display with uniform lighting

Aside from the 300 ppi display, which shows texts and images with good sharpness, the Kindle Scribe's front-light scheme is composed of 35 LEDs. That compares with 25 LEDs for the Kindle Oasis, 17 LEDs for the Kindle Paperwhite and four LEDs for the 2022 entry-level Kindle. You can adjust the color temperature from a warmer sepia tone to a cooler more bluish one. I generally kept it toward the warmer side, which gives it a more paperlike appearance, and like with other Kindles, for night reading, there's a dark mode that turns the screen black (or actually, very dark gray) with letters and images appearing in white or shades of gray.

The lighting has excellent uniformity to it and the touchscreen is quite responsive with the overall performance for an E Ink e-reader being top-notch despite the inherent laggy nature of E Ink. The Scribe runs on the same Mediatek system on a chip that runs the Paperwhite. It's capable of running up to 2GHz but only does so for certain applications that require higher performance, according to Amazon. As for storage, the base model has 16GB, but 32GB and 64GB configurations are available for more money. The Scribe is Wi-Fi-only Kindle, with no cellular option.

The Kindle Scribe has 18 notebook templates to choose from

The Scribe's to-do list template.

The power (and limits) of note-taking on the Scribe

While the 9.7-inch Kindle DX was discontinued around 10 years ago, the Scribe is its spiritual successor and a great choice for sight-challenged folks looking for a large Kindle that has the ability to display more lines of text at larger font sizes.

In the past, that was the biggest appeal of larger format e-readers (and that their screens wouldn't get washed out in direct sunlight, making them great for reading outdoors). But in recent years we've seen more of these stylus-equipped touchscreen e-readers finding a market with students and other folks looking for a dedicated E Ink device that offers note-taking and annotation capabilities without the distractions found in a feature-packed iPad or Android tablet (and that includes Amazon's own Fire tablets) which offer everything from web browsing to video watching to gaming. The Kindle Scribe, like other Kindles, has a rudimentary web browser, but it seems mainly designed to allow you to enable a Wi-Fi connection in public places like coffee shops and hotels where some web authentication is necessary.

Fellow CNET writer Sarah Lord has used more tablet-style e-readers , but I have tested the Kobo Elipsa , which is arguably the Scribe's most direct competitor and has been on the market for a while. It sells for $360 in a bundle that includes a cover and Kobo stylus. It has a front light, but the big difference is that its display is 227 ppi compared to 300 ppi for the Scribe's display. It's a noticeable difference.

Doodling on the Amazon Kindle Scribe

My daughter's doodle.

With the Elipsa, you can mark up Kobo ebooks. However, the one current shortcoming of the Scribe is that you cannot mark up Kindle ebooks or even DRM-free ePub ebooks (non-copy-protected ePub files). With e-books, you have to use Amazon's Sticky-note feature, which is available with other Kindles. You tap and hold on a word, then slide the pen across whatever words or sentences you want to select. Lift the pen and you have the option to create a handwritten or text note, highlight the word or sentence or share it.

Personally, I'm not someone who likes to mark up books and take notes in the margin, so I don't mind the sticky-note functionality, but lots of today's students do mark up their physical school books (my kids certainly do) and it would be nice to have the ability to make notes in the margins and circle sentences and whatnot.

As it stands, you can import a variety of file formats and document types to mark up if you so choose. You can import and write directly on-page in PDF documents (so if you had an e-book as PDF file, it could be marked up) and I found it easy to import PDFs using Amazon's Send-to-Kindle feature where you simply drag a file into a box on the Send-to-Kindle web page and it gets sent your Kindle (there are other options to send files, including via the Kindle app for iOS, Mac and Android as well as via email). It's also easy to export files via email.

Unfortunately, marking up PDFs isn't as seamless or intuitive as it is on other E Ink tablets. When you're in a PDF, you aren't able to adjust the font size or layout, so instead you have to pinch-to-zoom in order to enlarge or reposition the document. That part works well, and it's not too hard to find a level that works best for you. Once you're positioned in your PDF, you can't stay there. With the launch software, the Scribe makes it impossible to maintain your current zoom levels from one page to the next. Instead, you have to zoom all the way out again in order to swipe to the next page, just to reposition it all over again. This can make reading long PDFs cumbersome.

Keeping a journal with the Kindle Scribe

You can keep a journal with the Scribe and upload your entries to the cloud (free storage included).

You can also import and create handwritten sticky notes in Microsoft Word docs (DOCX, DOC), HTML, EPUB, TXT, RTF, JPEG, GIF, PNG, and BMP text and graphic files, but not in manga, comics, graphic novels, magazines or newspapers. Like with other recent Kindles, you can listen to Audible audio format (AAX) or text-to-speech audio with Bluetooth headphones or speakers. Additionally, Amazon says it's working with Microsoft to allow you to export a Word doc directly from a computer to your Kindle Scribe within that Word doc. That feature is coming in 2023, Amazon says, along with the ability to sync.

For free note-taking, doodling or creating notebooks and journals, the Scribe has 18 templates to choose from, including six lined options, graphing paper, musical notation and to-do lists. You can organize your notebooks in folders and search by their titles and Amazon says that in early 2023, you'll be able to get access to your notebooks through the Kindle app sync feature on other devices.

However, as my colleague Sarah Lord -- who also spent time with the Scribe -- notes, "All of that is great, but these notebooks lack any smart features. For example, there's no way to insert equations or convert your handwriting to text. Similarly, you don't get any help in drawing shapes or straightening lines. And while you can export your notebooks via email, there's no support for Dropbox or any other third-party service." That may not be a big deal for some folks, but the long and short of it is that serious note-takers might want more.

Lord says she prefers the ReMarkable 2 as a pure note-taking E Ink tablet, but it has its limitations as an e-reader and obviously doesn't include access to Amazon's extensive Kindle eco-system and its massive library of ebooks.

Kindle Scribe final thoughts

The big question for a lot of people will be whether to buy a Kindle Scribe or perhaps a new iPad or a Samsung Galaxy Tab S , the best Android tablet (or so a lot of people say). While you still have to buy some sort of stylus for an iPad (while Samsung's Galaxy Tab S8 series includes a stylus, iPads don't), it clearly offers a lot more functionality, zippier performance and high-resolution color display (alas, we're still waiting for color E Ink). You can certainly take notes and mark up documents with an iPad -- and also basically use it as a computer, particularly if you link a keyboard to it.

But as I said earlier, the Scribe is for someone looking for a distraction-free device with a specific purpose, and I do think it has some room to grow a bit with software and feature updates, some of which we know are coming in 2023.

Compared to a tablet, it also delivers much better battery life. You can get up to three months of battery life if you just use the Scribe as an e-reader (based on 30 minutes of reading a day), but note-taking draws more energy and cuts battery life down considerably. However, depending on usage, you can still get weeks of battery life while note-taking and doodling. It charges via USB-C -- a cable but no power adapter is included -- and using a 9-watt or higher adapter does speed up charging just like it does with your iPhone or Android smartphone.

The Scribe's size and weight make it more of a burden to carry around, especially when you consider the smaller baseline Kindle can fit into a coat pocket. But in all, the Scribe strikes a very good balance between a large-format e-reader and an E Ink note-taking tablet. Folks will probably have some quibbles about the Scribe's high price and the robustness of its mark-up and note-taking capabilities, but I do expect we'll see the device improve in the coming months.

Would you recommend the Text-to-Speech in the Kindle paperwhite?

I am a dyslexic reader. I love the Dyslectic font that the kindle provides. But for the most part, when I read digital books I like to listen to them as I read. I know that there is a hidden feature of the paperwhite where you can get the VoiceView Screen Reader but I don't know if is worth it.

Has anyone tried it? and if so, What did you think of it?

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (2021) review

The Kindle Paperwhite has had a spruce-up and then some

kindle paperwhite 2022 text to speech

It can sometimes feel like Amazon launches a new Echo device every time you go to make a cup of tea, but the company is a lot more relaxed when it comes to Kindles.

The entire point of a Kindle is that you exclusively read books on it, and there’s only so many ways you can jazz up plain text on a colourless display. Still, it’s been a long time since Amazon updated its Goldilocks e-reader, the Kindle Paperwhite, presumably because the old model has been selling consistently well since it debuted in 2018.

Given the wait, it’s not surprising that in 2021 the Kindle Paperwhite has had a spruce-up and then some. We’re talking about a larger display, reduced bezels, adjustable warm light and USB-C charging. And if you pay a bit extra for the fancy Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition you get more memory, wireless charging and an auto-adjusting front light, a la the top of the range Kindle Oasis.

There’s also a redesigned interface, which makes bookworming the day away easier than ever.

Design and features: bigger is better

kindle paperwhite 2022 text to speech

Oasis and the oft-forgotten Kindle DX aside, Kindles have had 6in displays since Amazon invented its e-reader in the late noughties. And honestly, we’ve always felt that it was a perfectly fine display size for reading books.

But Amazon has seen fit to up the new Paperwhite’s display from the tried and tested 6in to 6.8in, trimming down the surrounding bezels in the process. A bit of extra space is welcome and overall makes for a more pleasurable reading experience, but it does mean that the 2021 Paperwhite is noticeably larger than its predecessor, both in width and height, even if it is a teeny bit slimmer. Small-handed users might find the proportional change to be unwieldy, but it didn’t particularly bother us.

It definitely looks and feels different, but the new Paperwhite does lift several design elements from the previous model. Once again the display is completely flush, you’ve still got that grippy plastic back and there remains a slightly unwelcome Kindle logo below the screen. The lack of buttons means all interaction with the device when reading relies on the touchscreen, which like every Kindle before it is totally fine but lacks the responsiveness of modern phones and tablets. The best thing about the more expensive Kindle Oasis is its side-mounted page-turning buttons, and we do wish Amazon would add something similar to the mid-range e-reader.

For reasons we can’t explain, the sole button (power) the Paperwhite does have is located at the bottom of the device, next to the charging port. Not only is this a bit awkward to reach with any finger bar your thumb, but if you’re reading with the Kindle propped up on your lap it’s not impossible to accidentally nudge it into standby.

The most notable feature of the 2018 Kindle Paperwhite was probably IPX8 waterproofing, and it’s still very useful nearly four years on, allowing you to read in the bath without fear of butter fingers.

You get 8GB of storage on the standard model, which is enough to hold a library of thousands of books. The Signature Edition comes with 32GB, and you’ll really need to go some to fill that up. Both models support Bluetooth headphones for Audible audiobooks.

USB-C charging is a very welcome addition, and the Signature Edition adds wireless charging too. It’s a shame Amazon denied the cheaper model that option, as most of us have several Qi charging pads lying around now, and to our mind it’s more a useful feature than one that should be considered premium.

Display: Warming to it

kindle paperwhite 2022 text to speech

As for the display itself, it might be larger than before, but Amazon has kept the pixel density at 300ppi. You’re almost always just looking at text so there’s no need to make it any sharper as far as we’re concerned. The monochrome display is 10% brighter at its max setting compared to the last-gen model, although it’s rare we feel the need to crank it up that much anyway.

A more significant enhancement is the warm light function, which was added to the Kindle Oasis in 2019, and when employed in conjunction with brightness turns the frontlit display various shades of amber rather than blue, which is much easier on your eyes late at night and at the right setting makes the pages look more like those of a real-life paperback.

As with the Kindle Oasis before it, there’s no automatic display temperature adjustment like you get with most half-decent smartphones these days, so you’ll probably spend more time fiddling about in the settings to get it right than you’d ideally like to.

The standard Paperwhite doesn’t have automatic brightness either; you’ll need a Signature Edition for that. But a warmth setting really closes the gap on the Kindle Oasis, so unless you really want the buttons, we’re not sure it’s still worth the extra cash. That is, until a new model is launched, which could happen early next year if we had to guess.

The biggest strength of the Paperwhite display (and any Kindle display for that matter), though, remains the fact it is gloriously glare-free, which no tablet, no matter how ludicrously powerful, can match. It’s why e-readers are still by far the best way to read books that aren’t bound by paper when outside.

Software: new and improved

kindle paperwhite 2022 text to speech

Along with most other Kindle models released since 2015, the new Paperwhite features a redesigned user interface that makes navigation easier. A bar at the bottom now lets you quickly hop between the Home screen, your currently open book – displayed by a small cover art icon – and the Library screen. There’s also a prominent search bar at the top for finding a particular book quickly without having to swipe through your entire library.

You can now swipe down from the top of the screen, smartphone style, to access quick settings like airplane mode, Bluetooth and dark mode, as well as the adjustable brightness and warmth sliders. Amazon has also added the option of having the cover of the book you’re currently reading on the lockscreen, reminding you to get it read.

All the changes are good ones, although they do relegate the Kindle Store icon to a tiny shopping telly at the top right of the screen. Initially, we were scratching our heads a bit as to how we were supposed to buy books with the new software.

Otherwise, it’s much the same experience as before. You can swipe up on the Home Screen to see recommended books based on your reading history and active subscriptions. When you’re reading a book it’s easy to look up words, hop to different chapters and change everything from font style and size to page layout and theme. Getting around is still sluggish in comparison to using an iPad, but we’re happy to sacrifice a bit of speed for eye comfort and the lack of other distractions that can make trying to get through a book on a tablet problematic

Performance and battery life: fast reader

Amazon says page turns on the new Paperwhite are 20% faster than before, and we definitely noticed a bit of speed boost where E Ink refreshing is concerned. Loading books feels slightly snappier too. You still wouldn’t call it zippy, but the days of Kindles feeling slow to the point that using one can actually be a bit of a chore are long gone.

As for battery life, Amazon says you can expect up to 10 weeks if you’re only reading casually and not getting overzealous with screen brightness. Admittedly we haven’t yet had our review unit for even half of this time, so can’t say either way.

What we can say for sure is that battery drain is still remarkably slow – a good three or four hours probably won’t see you drop more than a few percent – and even hardcore bibliophiles won’t have to worry about regular trips to the nearest plug socket. If you do somehow kill it without realising, a 9W USB-C charger will juice the Kindle up fully in 2.5 hours.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite verdict

kindle paperwhite 2022 text to speech

With the redesigned and markedly improved Kindle Paperwhite there’s really no reason why Amazon’s Godzilla-like dominance of the e-reader market won’t continue until the next update. The slightly larger display is just about worth the added heft, while the warm light setting means the gap between the middle child Kindle and the comically expensive Kindle Oasis has never been smaller. We only wish it would pinch it’s flashier brother’s page-turn buttons, too.

The new interface gets a thumbs-up too, and when it comes to ebook stores Amazon’s enormous library and great value Kindle Unlimited subscription continue to win out. That is, providing you’re happy to buy all your books from Amazon, because it doesn’t make it all that easy to read from other sources.

The question isn’t whether you should buy a Kindle if you want an e-reader. That is – perhaps sadly – pretty much a given. The question is what model. Well, we’ve always recommended the Paperwhite as the one to go for, and the 2021 model’s enhancements only cement that further. Sure, the Oasis still offers the ultimate non-actual-book experience, but it’s simply not worth the extra £100. Nowhere close now.

If you have the previous edition and are wondering if it’s worth upgrading, that depends on how much you think the adjustable warm light would improve your reading experience. It’s definitely both nicer to look at and easier on the eye, but we don’t think it’s so essential that you should chuck your old one out of the window immediately.

What are the models of Kindle?

There are currently six models of Kindle offered by Amazon: the Kindle (old version Kindle e-reader), Kindle Kids (2022), Kindle Paperwhite, Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition, Kindle Paperwhite Kids, and Kindle Oasis.

What are the Advantages of a Kindle?

  • Convenience. An e-reader is convenient. You can carry five thousand books in your purse.
  • So many books to choose from. There are thousands of eBooks to buy on Amazon. Once you buy them, you can keep them in your library and access them anytime you want offline.
  • Accessibility feature to libraries’ online collections. Most libraries in the US let you check out eBooks for free.
  • Internet, music, and games. You can also surf the web (clumsily, but it works), listen to mp3 recordings (music or podcasts), and play games.
  • Dictionary. The dictionary feature is especially nice. Put your cursor in front of a word and you can immediately see that word’s definition: A great way to increase your vocabulary.
  • Translations . If you come across a word or sentence in a different language, you can translate it instantly.
  • Search function . You can easily search for a certain word in a book.
  • Paperless. You save a lot of trees.

What is Speech to Text?

The terms dictation software, speech-to-text, voice recognition, voice-to-text, and speech recognition can all mean a program that converts your voice to text on a screen in real-time.

Kindle are essentially a book and an audiobook/ audible book rolled into one. You can add your notes by speaking on Kindle. To do that, follow the steps below:

Step 1: Update Your Kindle Software

Before you begin, make sure your Kindle device has the latest software update.

  • Go to the “Settings” menu
  • Select “Device Options.”
  • Then select “Device Software Update”
  • Check for any available updates.

Step 2: Install a Speech-to-Text App

Install a voice to text app / text-to-speech app on your Kindle device. There are several options available on the Amazon Appstore. You can convert your audio file into a written file via them.

Step 3: Grant Access to the Microphone

Once you have installed a speech-to-text app, open it and grant it access to the device’s microphone. This will allow the app to pick up your voice and transcribe it into text.

  • Tap Microphone
  • Tap to turn on the microphone

Step 4: Start Speaking

Begin speaking into the microphone. The app will convert your speech to text in real-time and display it on the screen. Speak clearly and at a consistent volume to ensure accurate transcription.

Step 5: Save or Copy the Text

Once you have finished speaking, you can save the text to a file or copy it to the clipboard for use in another app.

Note: Some Kindle devices such as the Kindle Fire tablet / Fire HD series have a built-in text-to-speech feature (tts), it’s called Voiceview, which can read text aloud to you.

How to Get More Accurate Transcription on Kindle?

  • Speak clearly and at a consistent volume to ensure accurate transcription.
  • Some apps may require an internet connection to work properly.
  • You may need to train the app to recognize your voice before it can accurately transcribe your speech.
  • Some apps may have limitations on the length of speech that can be transcribed at one time.

  • This Thing Is Like a Kindle, But It Fits in My Pocket

Portrait of Jordan McMahon

As much as I love e-readers like my Kindle and Kobo, I often wish they were easier to operate one-handed, that they fit in my pocket, and that I could do more than just read text or listen to audiobooks on them so that I didn’t have to carry so many devices with me. The Onyx Boox Palma, which came out in August 2023, is the first e-ink device that lets me do all those things and more.

The Palma, which is about the size of an iPhone 15 Pro Max, has a crisp e-ink display with the same amount of pixels as the standard Kindle, so text looks especially good. There’s also a sensor on the front of the device that allows it to automatically adjust the screen’s brightness based on your environment. My favorite feature on the Palma, though, is its customizable buttons, which you won’t find on any Kindle or my other favorite e-reader, the Kobo Libra Color .

Additionally, the Palma’s built-in app for reading is packed with thoughtful features, including the ability to set up auto page-turn intervals, a floating toolbar with custom slots for actions such as viewing bookmarks and enabling text-to-speech, and tabs for multiple books. That said, it’s not my preferred reading app because it can feel overly complex compared to the reading apps on a Kobo or Kindle. Luckily, you’re not limited to what’s pre-installed.

The main appeal of buying an Onyx device is that they all run Android. You can install just about any app from the Play Store on the Palma, including the Kindle app (I prefer the Moon+ Reader myself), if that happens to be where you get your books. You can also use it to listen to podcasts or music on Spotify or your preferred streaming services. The built-in speaker doesn’t sound great, unsurprisingly, but you can pair the Palma to a Bluetooth speaker or headphones for a pretty good listening experience.

The Palma also supports installing apps from outside Google’s own store; I found a lightweight web browser designed specifically for e-ink screens, which I use for quick search queries based on what I’m reading or following links from newsletters. I can check email using the browser or install Gmail, but the onscreen keyboard has some delay due to the e-ink display, so typing out long emails isn’t fun without a portable keyboard . The ability to install any app may seem like a drawback — it could easily be as much of a time sink as a phone — but the slow refresh rate of e-ink screens makes it hard to do anything that isn’t text-based (video- and image-heavy apps like Instagram and TikTok as well as games more complex than Sudoku or crosswords don’t work well enough to be appealing). But since text looks so good on the Palma, I haven’t wanted to.

While the Palma looks like a smartphone with an e-ink screen, it doesn’t have cellular capabilities, so any downloads require a Wi-Fi connection. When it’s connected to Wi-Fi, you can even make calls and send texts through apps like WhatsApp or Google Voice.

A couple of quibbles: Because the Palma runs the already outdated Android 11, a developer could stop supporting that old version at any point, so your choice in apps may become more limited as time goes on. Plus, the device is also more vulnerable to security threats, so you may not want to use the Palma to store any sensitive personal data. The device’s plastic also feels cheaper than that of the Kobo Libra Color or Kindle Paperwhite and makes the device feel less premium despite a similar price tag.

My gripes haven’t been enough to stop the Palma from being the only reader I’ve touched for over two weeks; it’s even replaced my iPhone as the device I keep in my pants pocket.

The display quickly refreshes occasionally to remove these shadows and ensure a high-quality optical experience.

No. You do not need a Kindle Unlimited membership to read on a Kindle. All Kindle devices come with instant access to the world’s best eBook store. Kindle Stores worldwide offer millions of titles, including the latest best sellers.

3. How do I setup this Kindle?

You have the option to set up Kindle on the device following its on-screen instructions or with your Kindle app on your phone. When setting up using the phone, just open the Kindle app and enable Simple Setup in settings before you power on your Kindle.
