Modern Olympic Games

How it works

The modern Olympic games have been around for more than one century. There have been many respectable games throughout this time for many reasons, but one of the most defining Olympics in history are the 1960 Olympic Games. The 1960 Olympics took place in Rome, Italy from August 25 – September 11. The games featured 5,338 athletes competing in 150 events for 83 different countries. The 1960 Olympic games had many firsts for humankind, as well as many great athletes like Cassius Clay, Wilma Rudolph, and Abebe Bikila who all crossed amazing milestone.

In 1960, Cassius Clay was an 18 year old boxer from the United States. He travelled to Rome that year to compete in the Olympics in the light heavyweight division. Despite being so young, he won the gold medal with ease after defeating Poland’s Zbigniew Pietrzykowski, Australia’s Anthony Madigan, and Italy’s Giulio Saraudi. His performance gained him international attention and after the Olympics, Clay turned professional and won the World Heavyweight Championship for the first time. At about the same time, he changed his name to Muhammad Ali. Wilma Rudolph was diagnosed with Polio when she was about four years old, and was told she would never walk again.

Despite being told this, she overcame her disease and began to hop, then walk, and eventually be able to play basketball. When she was almost 16 years old, Wilma Rudolph competed in the 1956 Olympics in Australia to and won a bronze medal in the 4×100 meter relay. Four years later, she travelled to Rome for the 1960 games. There, she won gold in the individual 100 meter, individual 200 meter, and the 4×100 meter relay. After winning all of the golds, she was given the title “the fastest woman in the world”. She was also known as one of the greatest athletes in the 20th century because of her performance in Rome.

Abebe Bikila was not originally selected for the 1960 Ethiopian Olympic team, but was asked to join after one of their athletes was injured. Reluctantly, he travelled to Rome in 1960 to compete in the marathon. When Abebe got to Rome, he quickly discovered that none of the shoes there fit him right, so he decided to run the marathon barefoot. Despite this decision, Bikila won the marathon by 200 meters and set a world record in the process. He captured Ethiopia’s first and only Olympic medal at the 1960 Olympics, and also became the first Sub-Saharan African to win an Olympic gold medal.

Abebe became the first person to win two consecutive Olympic marathons when he won gold four years later, winning by four minutes and setting another world record. In 1964, he very smartly decided to wear shoes during the race. During the 1960 Olympics, there were many firsts for the world and and for the Olympic Games. To start, the 1960 Olympics were the first games to be televised in all of Europe, and the first to be televised in all of North America. The 1960 Winter Olympics were the first to be televised in the United States, just six months earlier. Italy’s Raimondo D’inzeo and Piero D’inzeo were the first ever pair of brothers to get gold and silver in the same event. Both brothers were also the first athletes to participate in eight Olympic Games.

The greatest first for the Olympics would be that the official Olympic anthem was first played in Rome. This anthem was composed by Spiros Samaras in the late 1800s and has been played at every Olympics since 1960. The 1960 Olympic Games in Rome were one of the most defining Olympics in history for many reasons. Athletes who crossed big milestones like Cassius Clay, Wilma Rudolph, and Abebe Bikila, and the fact that there were so many distinctive firsts is what make the 1960 Olympics so important.

The Olympic Games, often referred to as the Olympics, is a global sports event that brings together athletes from around the world to compete in various sports and disciplines. The history of the Olympic Games is rich and spans thousands of years. Read here to learn about the story of the Olympics.

The proposal from the Organising Committee of the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 (LA28) to include five new sports has been accepted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session held in Mumbai. Cricket (T20), Baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse, and squash will be in the program at LA28.

The history of the Games goes back around 3,000 years, to the Peloponnese in Ancient Greece. Sports contests organized at Olympia took place every four years and acquired the name Olympic Games.

The exact reasons for the birth of the Games are still unknown, as history has become mixed up with mythology.

Ancient Olympics (c. 776 BCE – 394 CE)

The origins of the Olympics can be traced back to ancient Greece, with the first recorded Olympic Games held in Olympia in 776 BCE.

These ancient games were held every four years in Olympia to honor the Greek god Zeus. They featured athletic competitions, including foot races, discus throwing, and combat sports like wrestling and boxing.

In addition to the Olympics, there were other major Panhellenic Games held in ancient Greece, including the Pythian Games at Delphi and the Isthmian Games at Corinth.
These games attracted athletes from various Greek city-states and helped foster a sense of unity among the Greek people.
The four-year interval between the Ancient Games editions was named an “Olympiad”, and was used for dating purposes at the time: time was counted in Olympiads rather than years.

There were originally three main criteria for participating in the ancient Olympic Games.

The athlete had to be male, of Greek origin, and freeborn. Women (exceptions were made for owners of horses), slaves, and foreigners were excluded.
After the conquest of Greece by Rome in 146 BC, the Romans were able to join the Greek athletes.

The Olympic Games continued for several centuries but declined during the Roman period. The games were banned by the Roman Emperor Theodosius I in 394 CE, marking the end of the ancient Olympics.

Revival of the Modern Olympics (Late 19th Century)

The idea of reviving the Olympic Games was proposed by Pierre de Coubertin, a French educator, in the late 19th century.

He believed that the Olympics could promote international understanding and goodwill through athletic competition.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was founded in 1894, and the first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896.

The modern Olympics quickly gained popularity and expanded to include various sports and events.

Women competed for the first time at the 1900 Games in Paris. Of a total of 997 athletes, 22 women competed in five sports: tennis, sailing, croquet, equestrianism and golf.
Since 1991, any new sport seeking to join the Olympic program must have women’s competitions.
With the addition of women’s boxing to the Olympic program, the 2012 Games in London were the first in which women competed in all the sports on the program.
In the early years, the Olympics were strictly for amateur athletes. However, this changed over time, and the Olympics gradually opened up to professional athletes, allowing them to participate.

The Olympics have often been influenced by global events and politics. They were canceled during World War I and World War II .

The Games have also been the stage for political protests and boycotts, with notable incidents occurring during the 1968 Mexico City Olympics and the 1980 and 1984 Olympics.

Winter Olympics

The Winter Olympics were introduced in 1924, and the Paralympic Games for athletes with disabilities began in the mid-20th century.

The first Winter Games were held in Chamonix (France), in 1924. Initially called the “International Winter Sports Week”, this event was renamed the “1st Olympic Winter Games” only in 1926 at the IOC Session in Lisbon.

From 1924 to 1992, the Summer and Winter Games were each held in the same year, every four years.

After 1992, the Summer and Winter Games are each still held every four years but the Summer Games are celebrated during the first year of an Olympiad, and the Winter Games are held in the third year.

In 1948, Sir Ludwig Guttmann organized a sports competition involving 16 World War II veterans with spinal cord-related injuries in Stoke Mandeville, England. Four years later, competitors from Holland joined, and the international movement, now known as the Paralympic Movement, was born.

Modern Olympics

The Olympic Games have continued to evolve, introducing new sports and disciplines, such as basketball, snowboarding, and skateboarding.

The number of participating nations has also increased, reflecting the global nature of the event.

The Olympic Games are not just about sports but also promote values like friendship, respect, and excellence. The Olympic motto is “Citius, Altius, Fortius” (Faster, Higher, Stronger).

The next Olympics will be held in:

In Paris, France, in 2024.
In Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, in Italy, in 2026.
In Los Angeles, USA, in 2028.
In Brisbane, Australia, in 2032.

International Olympic Committee

The International Olympic Committee is the guardian of the Olympic Games and the leader of the Olympic Movement.

It acts as a catalyst for collaboration between all Olympic stakeholders, including the athletes, the National Olympic Committees, the International Federations, the Organising Committees for the Olympic Games, the Worldwide Olympic Partners and Olympic broadcast partners.
It also collaborates with public and private authorities including the United Nations and other international organisations.

The modern Olympics face challenges related to issues like doping, commercialization, and the environmental impact of hosting the games. There is also ongoing debate about the choice of host cities and the cost of organizing the event.

Hosting the Olympic Games is a massive financial undertaking for the host city and country. The costs of infrastructure development, security, and event organization can lead to substantial financial burdens and the risk of cost overruns.
The environmental impact of hosting the Games is a growing concern. There is pressure to ensure sustainable practices in infrastructure development, transportation, and event management. Host cities are encouraged to consider long-term benefits beyond the Games.
Security threats are a constant challenge for Olympic organizers. Protecting athletes, officials, and spectators from potential terrorist attacks or security breaches requires extensive planning and resources.
Ensuring a level playing field and preventing doping scandals remains a challenge. Anti-doping measures are continually evolving to detect and deter cheating by athletes.
The physical and mental well-being of athletes is increasingly in focus. Issues like athlete abuse, harassment, and the pressures of competition need to be addressed to create a healthy and safe environment for competitors.
Developing extensive infrastructure for the Games often results in underutilized facilities post-event. Ensuring a productive and sustainable legacy for these structures is a challenge.
Geopolitical tensions can impact the participation of certain countries or disrupt the diplomatic and peaceful spirit of the Games.
Public support for hosting the Games can fluctuate, with some host cities experiencing significant opposition due to concerns about costs, displacement of residents, and other factors.
Climate-related challenges, such as extreme weather conditions or environmental changes, can affect the scheduling and safety of outdoor events.
Advances in technology impact the Games, from improving athletic performance to enhancing the viewing experience.
Ensuring the ethical conduct of officials and administrators is a constant challenge. Concerns about corruption, transparency, and fair decision-making need to be addressed.

The Olympic Games have become one of the world’s most-watched and celebrated sporting events, bringing together athletes and nations in the spirit of competition and international cooperation. The Games continue to evolve, adapt to contemporary challenges, and uphold their historical values.

History of olympic games.

3000 years before, from now, the ancient games took place in honor of Lord Zeus. It was all started from a town named Olympia near the Peloponnese peninsula in Greece. Olympics were first held in 776 BCE. These games were held every 4 years from 8th century B.C. to 4th century A.D. Coroebus was a cook from ancient Greece who first won the first Olympic game, becoming the first-ever Olympic champion by winning a 192-meter race.

The name Olympic is being given due to the place Olympia in Greece from which it has been started. The ancient Olympic Games were put on a stop when the Romans conquered the Greek empire. When the Romans conquered Greece during the mid of the 2nd century B.C. slowly, the standards of the game started to diminish. Moreover, in A.D. 393, the ancient Olympic Games were stopped.

The rise of modern Olympic games

Then it took another 1500 years when in 1896, the first modern Olympic took place in Athens, Greece. It was possible due to the efforts of a Frenchman named Baron Pierre De Coubertin. He was a person who showed a keen interest in the physical enhancement of people and was dedicated to the work of physical education for people. When he first visited the site of the ancient Olympic Games, he came up with a new scheme to start these games again with a different plan. When he went back to France, he arranged a meeting with the sports authority of France in November of 1892. He then managed to create an Olympic community, which was the leading organization that made the Olympics possible again.

The history of modern Olympics

In 1924 it was the first time when the 8th Olympic Games took place in Paris. It was the first time when the Olympics were held anywhere outside Greece. With 100 women and a total of 3000 contestants from around the world took place in those games. The level of the Olympics started to rise. From them, it became a matter of prestige for every country. Every nation desired to be part of the Olympics. Initially, contestants from 14 nations competed in the first modern Olympics.

These 11 below mentioned nations won some sort of medal in the first modern Olympic games-

Great Britain
United States

The United States is becoming the nation to win the maximum number of gold medals (11), and Greece, the hosting nation won the maximum number of overall medals (46). The Olympics held in 1896 were considered the most successful games. It was the game that hosted the maximum number of nations. It became a sign of friendship among those nations. Since then, these games are being organized as a gesture of respect and great camaraderie between different nations around the world. 206 nations in 2016 took part in the Olympic Games that were held in Brazil. Till now, the USA has won the maximum number of medals (2520) in Olympic Games. Baron de Coubertin is known as the father of the modern Olympics.

It was until the year 1994 that summer and winter Olympics used to take place in the same year. Participants from around the world gathered inside the stadium on the day of the opening ceremony of games. These contestants march around the stadium. Greece, due to the original place of the games, is given priority, so the sportsmen from Greece are the first in the march, and the last are from the country in which games are being organized.

Significance of Olympic rings

You must have noticed that the symbol of Olympic has 5 rings with blue, yellow, black, green, and red are the color that comprises the Olympic symbol, which is being represented on a flag. These five rings constitute five continents. The blue ring represents Europe, the yellow ring represents Asia, the black ring represents Africa, the green ring represents Oceania, and the red ring represents America.

Hosting ceremony

On the opening ceremony of the games, several athletes are selected to raise the flag light the Olympic flame. This flame lights up until the last Olympic game. Every sports person who takes part in the game takes an oath, which is commonly known as the Olympic oath. This oath, a vow that every athlete takes that took part in the game, will play its honesty and will perform his best.

The winners are being honored with gold, silver, and bronze medals according to their positions in the game. The medals are being given at the end of every event of games. The athletes are being selected by the sports authority of the respected country to represent their nation, the Olympic Games. It is the duty of the sports authority of the country to select the finest athlete to represent their nation. Whosoever wins at the end of each event medals are given to them with the national anthem of their country being played at the sports arena.

Selection of athletes

It is the duty of the international Olympic committee to make proper arrangements for the games and the arrangement of commute and proper living facilities for the athletes. The places where the contestants stay during the games is known as the Olympic Village. The primary duties of this committee are to look after the safety, living facility, training grounds, transport for the athletes. Management of stadium and living space is also the duty which this committee has to take care of.

These Olympics games are divided into two segments the summer games and the winter games. Summer games generally take place in the summer season, and winter games take place during mid of February.

Black day for Olympics

The 5th of September 1972 is considered as a black day in the history of the Olympics. Many terrorists entered the arena and killed several athletes. These games were held in Munich, Germany.

Only with the efforts of Baron Pierre de Coubertin, it was made possible for the Olympics to happen again. We should respect the athletes who sacrifice their comfort and luxury for the respect of their nation, for the peace of the world, and the sake of friendship.

The Olympic Essay – Essay 2

The first Olympic Games took place in 1896 in Athens in Greece . The aim of the Olympic was to bring together athletes from various countries in order to promote world peace. This aim remains the same even today. The Olympic Games include a variety of individual and team sports.

In 1920, the first Olympic flag was presented. The flag contains five interconnected rings upon a white background. Each of the rings stands for one of the five major continents; they are interconnected to symbolize that the world can work towards peace through this international competition.

The rings are blue, yellow, black, green and red. These colours were chosen because at least one of them appears on the flag of every country in the world.

The Olympic Games are held once in every four years and at different location each time. Two locations are chosen each time-one to host the winter Olympics and the other for the summer Olympics. It’s a very special honour to participate in the Olympic Games.

Participants spend years training for this special event. Qualifying for a spot on the Olympic team varies for each sport. However, dedication, skill, motivation, hard work, and desire to win are a part of the right formula for anyone dreaming of participating in the Olympic Games.

For each event the first three prizes are the gold, silver and bronze medals. In 1896, first prizes were silver medals because gold was considered of lower value than silver. At the Olympic Games at st Louis in 1904, gold replaced silver as the first-place medal.

The gold medals presented today are actually made from sterling silver. They are then covered with a thin coat of pure gold.

The Olympics and geopolitics

Ideally, sport and politics should not mix, but in reality, they often do. The Scottish Centre for Olympic Research’s (SCORE) work examines the geopolitical aspects of the Olympics and Paralympics.

The fundamental principle of the Olympic Games includes the harmonious development of humanity and the promotion of international peace through sport. In partnership with the UN, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) declares Olympic Truce resolutions before the opening of each Olympic and Paralympic Games. Geopolitical power games at the Olympics

One of the SCORE’s key interests is the geopolitical power games surrounding the Olympics and Paralympics. Our members have examined North and South Korean connections at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang and presented papers on the diplomatic boycott at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

Our most recent project looks at how current geopolitical tensions in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and East Asia influence the delivery of the 2024 Summer Games in Paris.O ur observation on this issue has attracted meaningful public attention.

The SCORE organised a session on the Olympics and Politics as part of the 2024 Political Studies Association Sport and Politics Specialist Group Conference. The IOC recognised the session as an official Olympic-related academic seminar.

The games will see flag football included as a sport for the first time with men and women from around the world competing on the biggest of international stages.

"I think it has to be a game-changer," says Kwok, who has played flag football for years in the New York area as a wide receiver and occasional quarterback.

"Flag football will be on the world stage and while it's taking place in the U.S., it will also have such an impact internationally.

Flag football is a hugely popular non-contact, five versus five version of American football that can be played by people of all ages, and is proving to be an ideal entry point for younger boys and girls. The NFL reports that more than 20 million people are currently playing flag football across 100 countries.

But it's not only young international athletes who dream of playing flag football at the very highest level, it's an ambition of some of the NFL's biggest superstars.

Once it was confirmed as an Olympic sport, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill and Dallas Cowboys defensive star Micah Parsons led the way in expressing a desire to form an American Dream Team for the flag football tournament in Los Angeles.

Kwok says: "Seeing how excited those players were about it and proactively bringing it up and saying they wanted to play and putting that pressure on to make it happen, it showed just how much excitement there is around the Olympics."

In speaking with Kwok - who previously co-founded a company called Pickup Football and ran competitive flag football tournaments across New York, New Jersey and Connecticut - it is clear that flag football will be about much more than the star power of the Los Angeles Olympics.

It is a sport that continues to gather momentum around the world, as Kwok explains: "What is so wonderful about flag is that it is a sport that has something for everyone.

"There are different positions people can play, you can have different skillsets and body types. But also, with the number of players on the field, you can play in a league, or you could even just have a pick-up game.

"Internationally, flag football is a great way for folks to get on a field, touch a football and experience what that's like. I know there are a lot of great flag activations around the excitement of watching football through our international games.

"So, that's a really good way for people to understand that if they love sports like American football, they can get on the field, they can throw and catch a football and they can play this game as well. Even if they haven't watched a game live, for young kids to get on the field and have that feeling of running a great route, catching the ball and juking someone, that visceral feeling is something that carries you forward."

While regular season games played internationally continue to dominate the headlines, there are wonderful examples of global success for flag football. In the United Kingdom, 60,000 boys and girls from 650 schools across England, Scotland and Wales are currently experiencing NFL Flag and will play for a national championship in Loughborough this June.

More than 5,000 schools in Mexico participate in the programme, giving more than 2.2 million young people access to the sport. China has 200,000 boys and girls playing in schools, flag football is part of the national curriculum in Japan's elementary schools and NFL Flag is played in every state in Australia.

Kwok explains: "We certainly anticipate flag football becoming even bigger. In what form, we will see. Having it in the Olympics in LA is a start and then hopefully continuing to have flag be an Olympic sport. When I think about my role and growing flag football, it really is around opportunities for boys and girls to play at the youngest level.

"If they want to, they can play a form of football in flag and then be able to play at the youth level and continue to play as they move through high school and college.

"And it's about making sure that girls and women have that same opportunity and they can play as a varsity sport in high school and then when they get to college, not just playing in intra-murals like I did at Stanford, but also the potential to play on a varsity team and then at an elite level representing your country and the potential to play in a professional league at some point.

"When you start to think about the demand for it? It's certainly a little early to say, 'Okay, we'll have a professional women's league' but there is so much momentum right now. Leading into 2028, it will be really interesting to see how we continue to grow it."

The Olympic Games are held once in every four years. The games which include the winter and summer games involve thousands of athletes drawn from more than 200 nations from around the world. In addition to that, the event is hosted by cities that are selected by the International Olympic Committee which decides where and when the Olympic Games are going to be held (Toohey 15).

With reference to the given question, this paper will provide a brief history about the Olympic Games. This paper will also discuss the impact that IT and IT strategy has had on the Olympic Games. On the other hand, this paper will also identify issues that the Olympic Games face with regard to the IT strategy.

The word Olympics was derived from the word Olympia which is a holy place in Greece that is believed to have been the only place that the Olympics took place in the world. The Olympic Games have been divided into two major categories. The categories are the ancient Olympics which were first held in 776 BC in Olympia, Greece (Toohey 45).

The other major category is the modern Olympics which were first held in Athens, Greece in the year 1896. In the years 1916, 1940 and 1944, the Olympic Games were cancelled to the world wars that were taking place then which led to very few countries agreeing to participate during the 1980 and 1984 Olympics.

In the ancient Olympics, the winner got all the wealth they deserved while the looser remained poor as they were before the Olympic Games. The Olympic Games were a common practice in the Greek culture and some games were eve played during the Persian Wars.

The games coincided with the Battle of Thermopylae but still went on without any cancellations whatsoever. In the modern Olympics, the winners get to walk away with the gold medal which is medals that have been carved from 100% gold with the runners up getting the silver medals and the bronze medals respectively (Toohey 52).

IT has been a major tool in the organization of the Olympic Games in the past century. This has been due to the technological developments that have been seen in the IT sector.

These new technological developments have been used in the Olympic Games before in the departments that are involved in the organization of the event. One of the main departments that IT has been used in the Olympic Games is the ticketing department.

In this department, IT has had a significant impact in that this is the department that has been tasked with the mandate of having to sell the tickets for all the games that are scheduled to take place during the Olympic Games.

On the other hand, this department is also mandated with the task of making sure that all the people that go into the stadiums have bought their tickets. This department is faced with so many challenges when it comes to selling the tickets for the events.

These challenges have been addressed by the improvement of in technology in that most of the people who buy their tickets can now be able to buy their tickets over the internet which eases congestion at the centers where the tickets are sold.

This has also had a huge impact because most of the ticket buyers can now be able to buy their tickets well in advance and this in turn reduces cases of fraud within the department.

The IT department in the Olympic Games is working tirelessly in a bid to making sure that technological developments are made so as to make the running of the Olympic Games smoother.

Some of the measures that would be taken by the IT department in the Olympic Games include the development of new software that will be used in the Olympic Games events. The Ticketing department will be able to make more efforts in a bid to be able to sell their tickets more accurately so as to reduce the cases of fraud.

The introduction of smart phones will also have a huge impact on this department in the future. The smart phones will be used by the customers and also by the departmental staff in a bid to making sure that everything runs fine.

The IT department will introduce the use of QR (Quick Response) codes where the customers can scan them by using their smart phones and this will enable the staff to be able to know of any queries that may arise and thereby solve it as quickly as possible.

The departmental staff will also create codes on the tickets which will be scanned by the smart phone thereby detecting any use of fake tickets which costs the department millions of shillings.

The smart phones will be used by the ticket personnel in-charge at the gate that will scan the tickets before one is allowed to enter the stadia and this will in turn reduce cases of people with fake tickets gaining access to the stadia using those tickets. This will be a huge development to the ticketing department.

Hold the French Fries! Paris Olympics Chart a New Gastronomic Course.

The environment will come first as France tries to revitalize the global image of its cuisine.

There will be no French fries for the 15,000 athletes at the Olympic Games that open in France in July. Yes, you read that right.

In what is being called the biggest restaurant in the world — a 700-foot-long former electrical power plant at the heart of the Olympic Village — there will be no foie gras, either, but vegetarian hot dogs and quinoa muesli will abound.

Strolling the length of what is known as the nave, a light-filled vaulted space where some 45,000 meals a day will be served 24/7 throughout the Olympics and Paralympics, Stéphane Chicheri and Charles Guilloy, the chefs in charge, sang the praises of vegetarian shawarma, za’atar-spiced sweet potatoes with hummus, cabbage pickles, beetroot falafel and grilled eggplant with smoked paprika.

This is a far cry from the classic French cuisine of elaborate sauces and “enough melted butter to thrombose a regiment,” as A.J. Liebling once described a dish .

But these are 21st-century Games on a warming planet. Carbon imprint trumps cassoulet. Vegetable protein is the thing; and of course athletes have to perform in a country of a thousand epicurean delights that are no-noes to their exacting nutritionists.

“French fries are too risky because of fire-hazard concerns over deep-fat fryers,” Mr. Guilloy explained. “No to foie gras because animal well-being is on everyone’s mind, and no to avocados because they are imported from a great distance and consume a lot of water.”

So how French sans French fries can these ecological Games be?

“Don’t worry; we’ll have French cheeses, blanquette of veal but with a lightened sauce, and of course baguettes,” Mr. Chicheri said with a smile. “Athletes will even be able to learn to make bread with a master baker.”

About 500 different dishes will be served at the Olympic Village dining hall in Saint-Denis, just north of Paris. The building is itself a tribute to environment-conscious adaptation: an almost century-old power plant of wrought-iron skeleton that became a movie studio before being transformed over the past year into a giant restaurant.

The Olympic Village restaurant will open as a global campaign by the government to boost French gastronomic impact and appeal gathers pace. With some 15 million visitors expected at the games, two million of them foreigners, France itself will be on display, and in particular Paris, posing the challenge of how to energize a tradition-bound culinary culture.

This is a critical moment for French cuisine, whose pedigree is undisputed but whose image has languished. How many “likes” these days does beef Bourguignon get beside ceviche, tapas or an omakase dinner?

“We’re a country of centuries-old gastronomic tradition, but the truth is that if you have a talent and you don’t nurture it, it can fade,” Olivia Grégoire, the minister for tourism, said in an interview.

She visited New York this month to promote a new multimillion-dollar initiative designed to introduce young chefs and innovative French dishes in places that will initially include South Korea, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. “Food is French soft power,” Ms. Grégoire said. “It is also hard money.”

More than 800,000 people are employed in the restaurant business in France, and the gastronomic sector, including wine and spirits, generates more than $55 billion a year in revenue.

In few countries is the ritual gathering around a table as important. In even fewer is pride so intense in the varied produce of “terroirs,” particular parcels of land with their own soil and climate, from the Alps to the Atlantic and from Normandy to the Mediterranean.

“The finest gastronomy is in our DNA; it’s a reference for all students of haute cuisine,” said Alain Ducasse, one of the most acclaimed French chefs who has been chosen to cater the July 26 Olympics opening dinner for heads of state, at which the chef has been asked to serve beef.

“But there is a new international challenge and we have been slow to be part of it,” he said. “Talent is everywhere. We need to wake up to that.”

With 34 restaurants, and 18 Michelin stars, in Europe, Asia and the United States, Mr. Ducasse is no slouch, and there are other French chefs, like Jean-Georges Vongerichten and Daniel Boulud, who have successfully seen the world as their market.

But even as French cuisine has changed — adding fusion touches to old dishes in ways that have spawned the “néobistrot” and introducing “le sharing” as a shockingly novel way of eating — its image has scarcely changed.

In this context, the repertoire at the Olympic Village could be an important game changer. There will be six “grab-and-go” outlets, Asian cuisine, Afro-Caribbean dishes, vegetarian shawarma, hamburgers (meat, vegetarian or a combination of the two), Middle Eastern food and halal cuisine. Kosher food will also be available on demand.

Patatas bravas will probably be the closest anyone gets to French fries.

Two fully fledged French restaurants are planned — but without such classics as steak tartare, blood sausage or choucroute. Wine, of course, is off limits because in the end the point of this 46,000-square-foot emporium with 3,623 seats is to ready athletes for top performance.

The other point is to underscore that France takes its environmental responsibilities seriously.

The French Olympic authorities banned throwaway cutlery and plates. They have not banished trash cans from kitchens, as some Paris restaurants have, but they do demand a zero-waste culture. Some 80 percent of ingredients will be French, and 25 percent from within 155 miles of Paris. Halving the carbon imprint of the Tokyo or London Olympics is the target.

The French company organizing this vast catering enterprise is Sodexo Live, a branch of the Sodexo company, which employs 420,000 people in food services and facility management worldwide. Sodexo Live, which has catered 15 Super Bowls as well as 36 Roland Garros tennis tournaments in France, knows its business, but the scale of this challenge is unique.

“We are hiring 6,000 people. Our aim is that everyone should feel at home and that we marry the nutrition an athlete needs with gastronomic pleasure,” Nathalie Bellon-Szabo, the chief executive of Sodexo Live, said in an interview.

To that end, three much-lauded chefs have been chosen, each of whom will appear for a couple of days every week at the Olympic Village and prepare the creative dishes that France wants the world to know better.

They are Alexandre Mazzia, who grew up in the Democratic Republic of Congo and has a restaurant in Marseille, AM, that bears a strong African influence and three Michelin stars; Akrame Benallal, who grew up in Algeria and runs Restaurant Akrame, a Paris restaurant with one star and some astonishing combinations of flavors — crab with gray shrimp and coffee, for example; and the French-born Amandine Chaignot, whose Café de Luce serves some of the most succulent frogs’ legs in the capital.

“French cuisine is emancipating itself. It has realized the need to change,” Mr. Mazzia, 47, said. “For me French cuisine is now multicultural, with different roots and spices, lighter, allied to a savoir-faire we must preserve.”

Mr. Benallal, 42, calls himself an “architect of taste,” forever sketching the presentation of new dishes because he believes “we eat first with our eyes.” His red and white quinoa muesli, topped with Parmesan, a little mascarpone and some smoked yogurt is typical of the inventiveness that has brought him a wide following.

“French cuisine is sometimes seen as boring,” he said. “It’s not boring. It’s singular. My restaurant is a cabinet full of curiosities, and that is what I will bring to the Games.”

As for Ms. Chaignot, 45, she has prepared a poached-egg croissant with artichoke cream, goat cheese and truffles to be eaten on the go at the Olympic Village. Another creation is a chicken dish with langoustines.

Even in a changing culinary world there are some constants. What, I asked her, defines French cuisine today?

“Butter is France,” she said. “And France is butter.”

The Galaxy have signed midfielder Riqui Puig to a contract extension through the end of the 2027 MLS season. Financial terms of the designated-player deal were not announced, but it is expected to include a substantial raise from the $2.5 million he is guaranteed this season.

Puig, 24, has recorded 17 goals and 21 assists in 61 games played (59 starts) across all competitions in parts of three seasons with the Galaxy. This year he has five goals and a team-leading eight assists in 15 games and leads MLS in touches (1,603), passes attempted (1,440), passes completed (1,270), multi-assist games (3), distance covered in possession (78.93 km) and fouls suffered (44).

“We are incredibly excited that Riqui has extended his commitment to the Galaxy through 2027,” Galaxy general manager Will Kuntz said in a statement. “Riqui has been an elite midfielder during his time in MLS and ensuring that he will remain a critical piece of our team was crucial as we continue our pursuit of putting a championship-caliber squad on the field.”

Special Olympics Torch Run

A handful of athletes along with supporters kicked off the Law Enforcement Torch Run on May 28, 2024, in Chula Vista.

Law enforcement officers and Special Olympics athletes gathered Tuesday at the Chula Vista Police Department to light the torch for the 2024 Special Olympics Southern California Summer Games and to begin the torch run. The 1,100-mile journey will culminate June 8 in Long Beach for the start of the competition. The torch will go through eight counties — San Diego, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles.
