A special committee nominates people. The Bharat Ratna and the Padma Awards are the two highest civilian honours. There are three different categories for the Padma Bhushan Award: Padma Vibhusan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri.

The second-highest civilian honour, the Padma Vibhusan, is granted for exceptional and distinguished service.

The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian honour granted for exceptionally meritorious service.

The Padma Shri is India's fourth-highest civilian honour, granted to individuals for exemplary service.

History of Republic Day

While we got independence from British rule on August 15, 1947, our country was still lacking a concrete constitution. Moreover, India also did not have any experts and political powers which would help in the functioning of the state affairs smoothly.  Up until then, the 1935 Government of India Act was basically modified in order to govern, however, that act was more bent towards the colonial rule. Therefore, there was a dire need to form an exclusive constitution that would reflect all that India stands for.

Thus, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar led a constitutional drafting committee on August 28, 1947.  After drafting, it was presented to the Constituent Assembly by the same committee on November 4, 1947. This whole procedure was very elaborate and took up to 166 days to complete. Moreover, the committee organized sessions were kept open to the public.

No matter the challenges and hardships, our constitutional committee left no stone unturned to include rights for all. It aimed to create the perfect balance so all citizens of the country could enjoy equal rights pertaining to their religions, culture, caste, sex, creed and more. At last, they presented the official Indian constitution to the country on January 26, 1950.

Moreover, the first session of the India Parliament was also conducted on this day. In addition to that, 26 th January also witnessed the swearing-in of India’s first president, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Thus, this day is very important as it marks the end of the British rule and birth of India as a Republic State.

Indians celebrate January 26 each year with lots of enthusiasm and zeal. On this day, people forget their religion, caste, creed, sex, and more. It brings together the country as a whole. Republic Day is a Significant Moment in India's History

26 th January is celebrated as Republic Day in our country. On this day in 1950, the constitution of our country was formally adopted and India became a fully sovereign state. The fundamental law of the country, the Constitution, was enacted out of the diligence and hard work of great men like Mahatma Gandhi and the numerous freedom fighters who fought and sacrificed their lives for the independence of our country. So, the 26 th of January was declared a National holiday and has been recognized and celebrated as the Republic Day of India ever since.

After Independence, the country did not have any self-made official Constitution, instead, its laws were based on modified colonial acts. So, establishing an official constitution for our own country was the utmost task in front of the Government of India. Our constitution is the result of the hard work and struggle of the esteemed members of the Constituent Assembly under the Presidency of Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Dr. Ambedkar was the Father of our Constitution. After deeply studying the various constitutions of other countries, our founding fathers framed our Constitution and it is the lengthiest constitution in the world. It reflects upon the dedication and foresight of these great men. That is how the Constitution came into being. It took two years, eleven months, and eighteen days to complete the Constitution. Though it was enacted and adopted by the constituent assembly on 26 th November 1949, it came into force on 26 th January, 1950.

Significance of 26 th January

It is to be noted that January 26 had a great significance in India’s struggle for Swaraj. The Congress Session at Lahore on December 29, 1929, had passed a resolution declaring Purna Swaraj (Complete Independence) as India’s goal. It was also decided that the 26 th of January should be observed all over India as Purna Swaraj Day. The complete Independence Day was for the first time celebrated on January 26 th, 1930. It continued to be so observed until 1947. On achieving Independence, August 15 became our Independence Day.

The republic day.

1. On 26th January, 1950 India became a Republic. It adopted the constitution on this day. 2. It is considered the red-letter day. Since then, it is celebrated with great pomp and show. 3. On this day the President takes salutes of our armed forces at Rajpath, in New Delhi. 4. The programme starts from Vijay Chowk in the morning. People occupy seats on either side of the road. 5. The President unfurls the National Flag. He is given a salute of 21 guns. Jhankies of different states are taken out which present a wonderful sight each. 6. School children play dance or bhangra. A colourful march past of our forces, police and NCC is displayed. Brave children and army officers are given prizes for their bravery and remarkable services. Brave children are seated on the elephants. 7. Tanks, aeroplanes, jeeps and military trucks are also displayed. In all, it is a day of great pride for every citizen. 8. Aeroplanes in the sky whiz the place making a colourful row of our National Flag. The whole show is telecast live on all the channels. 9. Those who can’t come to witness the show watch it on T.V. screens sitting in their homes. 10. Millions of people witness the march past and other displays from Vijay Chowk to the Red Fort.

Republic Day, being celebrated on 26 January 2025, is the 76st Republic Day of India. It is an important day for each Indian, as we owe all the privileges that this nation has to offer, to the Constitution of India, which was adopted on this day. 

Essay on Republic Day illustrate why we celebrate this day, what is its significance, what happens in the parade, and various other aspects of this day. Here are some beautiful essays on Republic Day that are useful for all of you. 

Republic Day Essay In English

India is a secular, sovereign, democratic, republic. Her secularism is enshrined in the preamble to the constitution and the fundamental rights and other clauses in the constitution.

The India Constituent Assembly adopted the constitution on 26th January, 1950. Since then, the republic day is celebrated all over the country with great pomp and show. The main attraction is the Republic Day parade at Delhi , where the President of India takes the salute. 

The Republic Day parade I witnessed on the Rajpath was a memorable one. First of all there was the booming of guns. The National Flag was unfurled by the President, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. Simultaneously MI 17 helicopter showered flower petals on the people. The king of Nepal, who was accompanied by his wife was the Chief Guest.

The Prime Minister paid homage to the martyr soldiers at Amar Jawan Jyoti.

The parade began with the Major General of Delhi Area in the lead. Winners of the highest gallantry award including the Ashok Chakra, Param Vir Chakra, and victoria cross followed the parade commander in jeeps.

The most awe-inspiring was Agni, the intermediate Range Ballistic missile with the range of 2450 km, carrying 1000 kg load of explosive including a nuclear warhead Then there were 28 tableaux (jhansi) from states and public undertaking. They represented India’s variety, cultural diversity, and secularism. Then there were a national bravery award winner children and their march. Then there was “Flypast” termed the “Big Boy” comprising several planes.

Finally, there was the breathtaking “Vertical Charlie” by a Su-30 aircraft, I can never forget what I saw long long back.

Everything I saw in the Republic Day Parade was so fascinating that I have decided that I will attend the Republic Day celebration every year! And I am certain that I will next time too I will get to watch many clips of scientific advancement in the pioneering fields.

Honoring what our ancestors did to fight for the freedom and constitution of the nation, I pray for a nation that they dreamed of – A nation without religion, racial and regional tensions, where man’s miseries vanish and mankind can live with greater dignity, peace, and comfort in an atmosphere of national respect and greater equality. That may be just a form of hope, but I will work towards it. 

In the India of my dreams, where all citizens are happy to get up for the national anthem and are delighted to be part of nation-building.

• 26 January, Republic Day is a day of pride and honor for every citizen of India. 
• Years ago on this date, in the year 1950, the Constitution of our country, which today governs our nation, came into being. 
• This gazetted public holiday is one of the most glorious day in the history of India as on this day, our country became ‘Republic’ wherein, its citizens have the supreme power and have a nominated president rather than a monarch’. 
• India is about to celebrate its 76st Republic Day on January 26 with the same enthusiasm and pomp as other festivals of India. 
• The Republic Day parade is held at Rajpath, New Delhi every year that starts with the President of India saluting all the military governors and our national anthem is played in the background. 
• Various school children take part in the parade, the national flag is hoisted by the President of India. 
• What attracts the audience and all the viewers of this parade is the cultural programmes happening at the parade ground; the jhankis depict the rich history and age old culture of India. 
• This year, Tania Shergill, an officer with Army’s Corps of Signal will be the first woman parade adjutant for the Republic Day. 
• It is a historic day for India as she becomes the first woman whose dream of being on the ground has finally become the reality; and the icing on the cake is that women CRPF bikers are also going to make debut in this year’s parade. 
• Republic Day thus celebrates the birth of the constitution, which finally came into effect when years ago on this date Dr. Rajendra Prasad took the first oath of India being a Republic country.
