English at Hull is friendly, inclusive and supportive, and characterised by the internationally excellent research that informs our postgraduate degree supervision. Our academic staff have expertise in all literary periods, from Early Modern to 21st century literature. We have renowned expertise in medieval literature and medievalism, Shakespeare and Renaissance drama, early modern literature and politics, 19th-century studies (particularly the novel and the visual arts), modern and contemporary literature (particularly poetry and fiction), genre fiction (gothic, crime and science fiction), and creative writing. We offer two research options for postgraduate students MRes English (Literature and Creative Writing pathways) or a PhD (English or Creative Writing). You have access to the superb facilities of the newly refurbished Brynmor Jones Library, as well as our Graduate School. PhD students have exclusive use of the library's Postgraduate Lounge. Research is strongly interdisciplinary and enhanced by the research networks of its centre including the Andrew Marvell Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Studies. Our community

The fear talking.

One of our newest staff members Dr Chris Westoby has recently published his debut novel The Fear Talking . Chris – our Programme Director of the Hull Online MA in Creative Writing – is also a Hull alumnus and credits his experiences as a student here at Hull for helping shape his literary career:

‘My journey towards being the Programme Director of the Hull Online MA Creative Writing and publishing my debut book, The Fear Talking , all began here as a student at the University of Hull. Our MA Creative Writing cultivates an environment where it is safe to try new avenues of writing, take risks, experiment and face down difficult subjects. As a student, this supportive community encouraged me to disclose my mental health condition for the first time via creative writing. It was barely a sentence, but it was the seed that led to undertaking a PhD and developing an entire book on the subject’.

The Fear Talking is available from Amazon and Waterstones .

Dr Chris Westoby

"I know there are young people out there who feel like I did"

‘a university that puts the interests of their students first’.

BA English Language alumnus Sam Green shares his excellent student experience:

‘Like many students at the University of Hull I was initially impressed by the phenomenal campus and the incredible resources and facilities that were available for students. Hull is certainly a university that puts the interests of their students first.

‘The support I received from the academic staff in the English department was exceptional and was an essential factor in allowing me to achieve a first class degree. The whole faculty truly are experts in their respective fields, which was evidenced without exception through their engaging and passionate teaching.

‘From day one you are treated as an individual and supported in as many ways as possible to reach your potential. After leaving Hull with my first class BA Hons English Language and Literature, I went on to study at the University of York and completed my PGCE. I am now a teacher of English at one of the highest performing academies in South Yorkshire.

‘If I were to give one tip to aspiring students it would be to use the knowledge and expertise of your lecturers – they are all friendly, approachable and dedicated to supporting you along your journey at the University of Hull’.

English Society Fosters Community Spirit

The English Society epitomises the community ethos of the department. As the current chair Laura Skinner explains:

‘Hull University English Society is a safe, inclusive space for students with a passion for literature to meet like-minded individuals and become a part of the University’s literary community. We host a range of events including a virtual book club, ‘Meet the Author’ sessions, and publish our own interdisciplinary creative anthology The Scribbler ’.

The Scribbler is the department’s creative writing journal. Chief Editor Lydia Cutmore explains the inclusive nature of this creative outlet for students:

‘Exploring a different theme in each issue, The Scribbler unites creative students from across all departments of the University, offering a space for self-expression. Accepting a wide array of submissions – from photography, film and music, to poetry and creative writing – it showcases the endless talent of our community’.

Creative community.

The department embodies a creative community spirit. Russ Litten, an American Studies alumnus, explains how his degree helped him on his way to becoming a writer:

‘I came to the University of Hull as a mature student after several years signing the dole and playing in bands. I was a big fan of American literature, so the American Studies department was ideal for me. My burgeoning literary ambitions were given great encouragement by staff and their comments gave me the confidence I needed to submit work to publishers.’

Learning from Scottsboro: Exploring Past and Present American Racial Injustices in Collaboration with Local Schools

Dr Barnaby Haran has been awarded £4150 from the Ferens Education Trust for his project ‘Learning from Scottsboro: Exploring Past and Present American Racial Injustices in Collaboration with Local Schools’.

The project involves engagement with local schools through workshops and a poster competition in conjunction with an exhibition entitled ‘Scenes from the Scottsboro Trials: Photographs by Fred Hiroshige’ , scheduled to coincide with the university’s hosting of the 2022 British Association of American Studies Conference . The aim is to create a forum for critically examining racial injustices in the United States by responding to photographs of this infamous case from the 1930s when nine African American teenagers were convicted of sexual assault on false testimony. The workshops and poster competition will generate dialogues with sixth form students about representation and diversity in relation to the media portrayal of the Scottsboro Nine and will explore comparisons with contemporary instances.

To find out more contact DR Barnaby Haran .
