How to Write a Job Application Letter (Tips and Examples)

Do you have your heart set on a specific company but have never seen them post a single vacancy? And are you on the verge of giving up completely, and convinced you’re going to be jobless and broke for the rest of your life?

Well, don’t crumple your  perfectly written résumé  in a ball of paper just yet — there’s still hope for you!

All you need to do is write an awesome job application letter.

Application letters are a great way to get your foot in the door of a company that hasn’t advertised a position or when you’re applying for an academic program or an  internship .

So, what are you waiting for?

What is a job application letter/email?

Whereas cover letters are used when applying for a specific vacancy, and include details which are complementary to what’s on the applicant’s résumé, application letters are submitted when there is no job opening, and they tend to be more detailed.

Unlike cover letters, which usually span about one page, application letters can be twice as long.

How should you structure your letter?

The structure and formatting of your application letter is just as important as the words you use to sell your skills and enthusiasm for the job. The pointers below will help you deliver your message in a professional and effective way.

Sender’s address

Begin your letter with your address listed in the left-hand corner of the page. In the US, it’s acceptable to list your address in the right-hand corner. (Skip this step if you’re going to send your application via email.)

If you’re applying via email, create an email address for professional use if you haven’t already. This should include your first and last names or initials — no nicknames or years of birth! Two appropriate examples are [email protected] and [email protected] .

As with any official letter, include the date of your letter below your address.

Subject line

The  subject of your email  should make the manager want to read more and not automatically press the “Delete” button. It could be something like: “Social Media Expert with over 5 Years of Experience”.

Inside address

The company’s address should appear a few lines below your address and the date. Skip this if you’re sending an email.

As with any formal letter, you need to open with the correct formal salutation (such as “Dear Mr [surname]” or “Dear Ms [surname]”).

It’s also best to find out who the head of the department is, and address your letter directly to them to show that you’ve taken the time to really do your research. If you begin with “Dear Hiring Manager”, for example, you’re potentially destroying your chances of getting the job you’re applying for.

Opening paragraph

The opening paragraph should provide details on why you’re getting in touch.

Think about what you want to achieve with this letter before forming your answer. For example, you could say that it’s been a dream of yours to work for the company and that you feel that, given the chance, you’d love to bring new skills and ideas to the table. You can also highlight any qualifications you have here.

Middle paragraph(s)

This is where you will explain why you’re suitable for the position by listing skills you’ve developed through previous work experience . Remember that this shouldn’t be a word-for-word copy of your résumé; rather, you should use this as an opportunity to expand on notable achievements.

And make sure you tailor the content of your letter to the particular job title and company you’re applying to — you don’t want to ramble on about irrelevant details.

Final paragraph

Finally, focus on what you bring to the table and how the company can benefit from your skills and experience. If you have statistics and figures to back up your claims, even better!

For example, if you’re an experienced project manager, you could say how you want to showcase your leadership skills and help the company reach its desired turnover, and then back this up with statistics on how you did just that in previous positions.

You should close your letter with a call-to-action. For example, you could say something like: “I look forward to hearing back from you to discuss any possibilities”. And don’t forget to thank the reader for their time!

Your name and signature

If you’re sending this by snail mail, opt for a handwritten signature. If, on the other hand, you’re sending an email, simply write your name, followed by your contact information.

Most application letter templates (and formal letter templates in general) use the Times New Roman typeface at 12 points. Other recommended fonts include Arial, Georgia and Calibri.

Tips for writing your letter

When it’s time to write an application letter, bear the following points in mind to ensure that your document captures the hiring manager’s attention and successfully creates the impression that you’d make a good fit for their company.

1. Include bullet points

Bullet points can be used as an effective formatting tool when writing your application letter. They can demonstrate points clearly and concisely, as well as help with the overall layout, allowing for bite-sized, readable chunks of information.

2. Make sure the language you use is easy to read

You might be a literary wizard , but those long words won’t impress the hiring manager if they make your letter difficult to read.

3. Use positive language

Positivity is the way forward when it comes to selling your skills to a potential employer. Therefore, you should use positive words when explaining your previous work experience.

These words include “assisted”, “conducted”, “executed”, “proposed” and “recommended”, which (when used right) can demonstrate your contribution and dedication to your role and organization.

4. Be creative

Depending on the industry that you’re interested in, you can be a bit creative with your approach . This means that you don’t have to follow the conventional structure of a cover letter, and can instead adopt a more story-like approach.

Should you add any attachments?

Since application letters are not submitted in response to particular job ads, but rather serve as an inquiry into any unadvertised openings which may be available, they tend to be standalone documents. That is to say they are not typically accompanied by other files.

Whereas cover letters are concise, tailored to the job posting and accompanied by résumés, your letter of application will be a more extensive account of your skills and experiences.

That being said, if you’re applying for a creative position such as that of a video editor or blog writer, it makes sense to include a few samples of your work that best represent your talent and ability.

The following application letter samples can give you an idea as to what to include in your letter, as well as how to structure it effectively.

1. Job application email sample

Dear Mr Cannon,

I have long been following your company’s growth and progress, being extremely passionate about clean, renewable energy. I remember coming across XYZ Renewables back in the early 2000s, when it was still in its early startup stages, and I admire how your leadership has grown the company since.

Having gained extensive experience as a solar consultant over the last decade, I have kept an eye out for any job opportunities with XYZ Renewables. This is why I am writing to you today: to express a keen interest in working with you in the future, should any solar consultation vacancies become available at your company.

In my current role at ABC Energies, I train new hires in advising and liaising with clients, as well as in designing and installing solar systems that cater to the needs and budget of our clients. I carry out the same duties myself, and have been commended for my customer service skills and technical know-how in solar systems installations. Over the last year, I have overseen and facilitated transactions totaling upwards of $1 million.

During my final year at Arts College, I produced a screenplay for a short film, and found that setting up the scene and creating a whole new world in words was far more fascinating to me than trying to recreate it by moving around and rendering pixels on a screen. I received the highest mark out of everyone on my course for that piece of writing; and that was followed by my screenwriting professor’s recommendation: the way he spoke about AB University’s history and faculty removed any sort of doubt from my mind. It all became clear: this was to be my new path.

1. Do your research

Research is one of the most important steps when it comes to  job searching ; you need to make sure that you know all there is about the organization you’re targeting and you should have a clear understanding of what their company culture is like.

2. Don’t forget to proofread

This goes without saying, but never send your application letter off without proofreading it. With so many readily available editing tools online, there’s no excuse for a careless typo or wordy sentences. Grammarly and Hemmingway are two of the most popular programs to help you perfect your writing.

3. Use their style of writing

You can usually guess a company’s style of writing from their website and publications. So, it’s important to try and keep your letter in line with this so they can see that you’re a real match for the position and that they’d be silly to not invite you for an interview.

Final thoughts

Whether you go to write a cover letter or an application letter, or even to put together a portfolio for a prospective employer to see, the same thing applies: everything you include must be related to the position you’re hoping to land.

How to Address a Cover Letter

Here’s an example of how to address a cover letter:

Structure of a Cover Letter Address Section

1. cover letter heading (sender’s information).

At the very top of your cover letter, in what’s called the cover letter header, you’ll place your contact details. 

As we showed you above, it’s quite simple:

Your First & Last Name Your Address Line 1 Your Address Line 2

If you want, you can include your phone number or email address, as well.

Cover letters follow a business letter or formal letter format, but, you don’t have to necessarily stick to the styling of the example above. If you have a stylized heading with your name and contact details from your resume contact information section, feel free to use the same heading here!

However, for the remainder of the cover letter, stick as close to the business letter format as possible.

2. The Date

The entirety of addressing a cover letter is quite simple, and that’s true for the date as well.

Here’s how to add a date on a cover letter:

Just remember to leave a line break space both above and below the date to keep things looking neat and organized.

3. Inside Address (Recipient’s Information)

After the date, it’s time to add the recipient’s information, also known in formal letter writing as the “inside address.”

As we showed you above, here’s how to write the company’s info:

We start with the name of the person you are addressing the cover letter to, usually the HR manager or hiring supervisor, followed by their official title at the company. Do your best to find someone’s name so it is tailored by researching the company and its LinkedIn profile.

If you still can’t find someone’s name, simply put “Hiring Manager” or “ATTN: Hiring Manager” above the company name and address.

4. Salutation

The last part of the cover letter address section before reaching the body is the salutation. 

And here’s how simple that is:

Dear Jessica:

Easy as that! 

You can tweak that a bit, if you prefer not to use “dear,” for example. You could also choose to use their last name (“Dear Ms. Schwartz”) or their full name. However, in most cases, I think the first name is most powerful (and we’re in the 2020s now, as well).

Finally, use a colon after the name and you’re through!

A cover letter normally is attached with a resume for a specific job opening, whereas a job application letter can be submitted independently. As already stated, a job application letter can also be known as a cover letter. Format wise, there are a lot of similarities.

However, a job application letter can also be more detailed than a cover a letter. Usually a cover letter acts a quick introduction to a resume when a candidate applies for a specific job opening.

Meanwhile, you can submit a job application letter to a company even if there are no job openings. In this case, you would provide more detail about yourself and your qualifications. Due to this, job application letters tend to be a little longer than the average cover letter.

Now that we’ve gone through the basic formatting for a job application letter and a few examples of what one might look like, how can we condense all that information into digestible pieces?

Refer to these lists of “dos” and “don’ts” to help you through your drafting process:

Explain what you can bring to the company. Consider: how is your experience relevant to what the hiring manager is looking for?

Discuss your skills. Pick out a few skills listed in your resume and describe how you have utilized them in the workplace.

Give specific examples to support your experience. Is there a major project you worked on at your last job ? Did you accomplish something significant in your previous position? Including examples of these things in your letter will add new, specific content to your application and make you more interesting.

Edit your letter thoroughly. Read your letter a couple times, pass it off to someone to look over, run it through an online grammar check. Make sure it’s free of any errors.

Don’t focus on what the job can do for you. While it might seem nice to write that a job is your dream job or that you’ve always wanted to work with a company, it can read as vague flattery. Remember, this letter is about your qualifications.

Don’t list your current or previous job description. Your education and work experience certainly have value, but don’t just list your degrees and places you’ve worked at. Explained what you learned from those experiences and how they’ve made you a strong employee.

Don’t paste directly from your resume. A job application letter is meant to add to your value as a candidate, not just reiterate the same information repeatedly. Use your resume as a guide , but expand on especially relevant details.

Don’t submit an unedited letter. Before an employer ever meets you, they see your application and your job application letter. You don’t want grammar errors and misspelled words to make a bad first impression, so make sure to edit your draft multiple times.

Armed with these tips, guidelines, and examples, you’ll be able to draft your job application letter more confidently and send them off to potential employers knowing that you’re one step closer to employment.

Application letters are typically written to accompany school or job applications. The purpose of the letter is to introduce yourself to the decision committee, and to outline your qualifications in a specific way. It can be the only time other than an interview that you have a chance to really stand out in an application, so it's important to get it right. Writing a Job Application

Step 1 Say why you're writing and what you're applying for in the first sentences.

  • A good example would be: "I'm writing to apply for the Chimney Sweep position advertised in Rolling Stone. I think my experience in the heating industry makes me uniquely qualified for this position. Please find my application materials and a brief description of my qualifications below."
  • Don't write your name until the signature. It'll be in the header and in the sign-off, so there's no reason to put it in the body of the letter itself.

Step 2 Explain why you are the best candidate.

  • Be specific. Who are you? Where do you come from? What's your story? These details are important. HR screeners read hundreds of these.
  • Describe your ambitions. Where do you want to go? How will this opportunity help you get there?
  • What skills and experiences make you the right fit? Be as specific as possible and avoid vague language. It's better to describe a time you solved a specific problem at your last job than to just write, "I'm a good problem solver at work."

Step 3 Keep the tone professional.

  • Tailor it to the business. If you're applying to work at a record store, you need to talk about music. If you're applying to work at a tech company that writes, "Tell us something totally rad about yourself!" it's probably ok to be a little more informal.

Step 4 Explain how both parties will benefit from your selection.

  • Don't over-promise. Telling someone that you can guarantee that you'll be able to turn around their sales figures in six months or less is a good way to get fired in six months.

Step 5 Do some research.

  • Any kind of job requires this type of research. If you apply to a restaurant, you need to be familiar with the menu and the kind of customers the restaurant attracts. Consider eating there a few times before you apply.
  • Don't show you're familiar by criticizing a business and telling them what you can do better. Not the time to offer a harsh criticism of a business plan that you don't really know anything about.

Writing a School Application

Step 1 Address the prompt.

  • Common prompts include things like, "Outline your qualifications for this position" or "In writing, explain how this position would affect your career goals." Sometimes, the prompt will be as short as, "Tell us something interesting about yourself."
  • If there is no prompt, but you still feel the need to introduce your application with a letter, it's usually best to keep it as short as possible. Explain what you're applying for, why you're applying, and thank the contact for their consideration. That's it.

Step 2 Tell your story.

  • Often, college prompts will ask you to describe a time you struggled, or a time you overcame some obstacle. Write about something unique, a time that you actually failed and dealt with the consequences.
  • The board will get thousands–literally, thousands–of letters about someone's first mission trip, and letters about the time someone's sports team was beaten, then overcame the odds, and won again. Avoid these topics.

Step 3 Write about your future.

  • Be specific. If you're writing to a college board, don't say, "I want to go to this college because I need a degree." That's obvious. What do you want to do with it? Why? If you're applying to a business, don't say, "I just need a job." That's obvious. Why this specific job?

Step 4 Don't include stuff that's also on your resume.

  • If you're applying to schools, what do you like about the school? What faculty are you interested in? Why this school, instead of another?

Formatting Application Letters

Step 1 Keep it short.

  • If you don't get a word-count guideline, just focus on making one or two good points about yourself, and keeping it at that. No need to drone on four several pages.

Step 2 Only address the letter if you have someone to address it to.

  • Instead of a salutation, write, "Letter of Application" at the top left corner of the page, or put it in the header on the left side at the top.

Step 3 Use a standard font.

  • Sometimes, it's appropriate to type your name, then print out the letter and sign it in pen. That can be a nice touch.

How to Address an Application Letter

Structure an application letter for a job or a college as you would a formal business letter. Find out the name and address of the person to whom you're sending the letter and include them in the proper format. Also use the proper salutation, or greeting.

Begin with your address at the top of the letter. This can be in the center--such as on formal letterhead--or left justified (indented to the left). Your name should go on the first line, your street number and street name on the second line, and your city, state and Zip code on the third line. Below this, add your telephone number and, on the last (fifth) line, include your email address.

Determine whom you'll be writing--the person's name and title. For example, if you're applying to college, search the school's website to for the name of the dean of admissions. If applying for a job, the job listing should specify whom the application is addressed to; look on the company website to learn the title if the listing doesn't include it.

Leave several spaces after your name and contact information. Then write the person's name on one line and the title below it. The company name should go on the line below that, followed by the street address and the city, state and zip code.

For example: Mr. John Smith Vice President of Marketing ABC Company 1234 Job Street Suite 1010 New York, NY 12345

Leave several more line spaces and write a salutation. Usually you should begin the salutation with "Dear." For example: Dear Mr. Smith. Use the proper title if the person has one: Dear President Smith, or Dear Dr. Smith, for example. If you're applying to college, you may want to include the names of the admissions committee too. For example, Dear Dean Smith and the Admissions Committee.

Making his case to union members and Democratic voters at an earlier campaign stop at a suburban diner, Biden said: “I promise you: I’m OK.”

The handful of Democrats calling for Biden to step aside continued to grow on Thursday and Friday. One example: Swing state Rep. Greg Stanton, D-Ariz., said in a statement that "For the sake of American democracy, and to continue to make progress on our shared priorities, I believe it is time for the President to step aside as our nominee.”

Energized Biden tries turning attention back to nemesis Trump

President Joe Biden went on the attack against "the press," accusing the media of hammering him over getting names wrong − "because I say Charlie instead of Bill" − while giving Trump a "free pass." On Thursday, Biden mistakenly referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as "President Putin" and Vice President Kamala Harris as "Vice President Donald Trump."

"Today we're going to shine a spotlight on Donald Trump," Biden told the energized crowd at Renaissance High School in Detroit. "We're going to do what the press so far hasn't − but I think they're going to soon. We're going to say who he is, what he's going to do. Folks, Donald Trump is a convicted criminal."

Biden later added: "Most importantly, and I mean this sincerely, Trump is a threat to this nation."

Biden took aim above all at Project 2025 , a 920-page policy blueprint of the Trump-aligned Heritage Foundation that includes plans to eliminate the FBI and Department of Education, banning abortion drugs, blocking climate change research, stripping back transgender rights and replacing career federal civil servants with political appointees.

‘I promise you, I’m OK,’ Biden assures voters on the campaign trail in Michigan

Fresh off his high-stakes press conference the previous night, President Joe Biden brought his campaign to Michigan on Friday, stopping in the afternoon at a restaurant before an evening rally set for later in Detroit.

“We gotta finish the job,” Biden told about 50 people seated at tables at Garage Grill and Fuel Bar in Northville, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. “I promise you: I’m OK.”

“We love Joe” posters were displayed in the restaurant’s windows.

In remarks that lasted about 15 minutes, Biden did not directly address the growing number of Democratic detractors who want him to drop out of the election or his disastrous debate two weeks ago that set off panic within the party about his mental fitness.

“This is an important one,” he said of the election, before the 81-year-old Biden referred to his age. “For the longest time I was too young because I was the second youngest man ever elected to the United States senate and now I’m too old.”

"With age comes a little wisdom,” Biden said. “The alternative is not much of an alternative."

Joe being Joe: Biden campaign downplays glaring gaffes at press conference

The Biden campaign waved away two major gaffes that President Joe Biden made during remarks at a NATO summit and press conference that followed on Thursday − both which attracted even more scrutiny over his mental sharpness. .  

Biden turned heads by introducing Ukrainian President Volodymyr President as “President Putin,” the leader of Russia. And during the press conference he mistakenly called his vice president, Kamala Harris, “Vice President Donald Trump."

But Biden's reelection team didn't miss a beat.

"Joe Biden has been making gaffes for 40 years. He made a couple last night. He will probably continue to do so," said Michael Tyler, the campaign’s communications director.

Tyler then pivoted to the policies of former President Donald Trump , the presumptive Republican nominee, singling out Trump’s comments about a “bloodbath” if he loses the election and being a dictator on “day one,” while accusing Trump of wanting a nationwide ban on abortion. 

"The voters of this country are smart,” Tyler said. “The voters watched the totality of that press conference. They saw the president lead on the global stage.”

Biden campaign says ‘donations exploded’ during press conference

The Biden campaign said Friday it received nearly 40,000 individual donations on the night of President Joe Biden’s press conference as team Biden sought to project momentum despite the emergence of more Democratic detractors.

“Donations exploded,” Michael Tyler, the Biden campaign’s communications director, told reporters on Air Force One while Biden was en route to Detroit for a Friday evening campaign rally.

Tyler said the campaign took in seven times its typical hourly haul during Biden’s one-hour press conference Thursday night – his first press conference since his disastrous debate with Donald Trump two weeks ago. Tyler did not provide a dollar amount.

Reports by NBC News and other outlets have said the campaign’s fundraising has taken a major hit over the past two weeks while Democrats have called on Biden to drop from the election. The New York Times reported Friday that mega donors from Biden’s largest Super PAC, Future Forward, are putting $90 million in pledged contributions on hold if Biden remains the Democratic nominee.

“The president gave answers to a wide range of questions reminding Americans that he is the best leader to continue to move our country forward and the best candidate to beat Donald Trump,” Tyler said.

Dems in Congress feel the heat from voters back home 

Some Democrats in Congress are facing growing pressure from their constituents to push President Joe Biden out of the 2024 race. 

Rep. Cori Bush, D-Mo., who is in the middle of a tight primary race , said at an event Friday that “100%” of the phone calls her office is receiving are from people asking her to call for Biden to drop out. 

Rep. Becca Balint, D-Vt., said in a statement that she “heard overwhelmingly from Vermonters that they would like to see President Biden step aside in this race.” 

Sen. John Hickenlooper, D-Colo., said his office had received more than 3,000 calls and emails from constituents saying something similar over the last week or so. 

“These are people that are not donors. These are not elite,” Hickenlooper told Semafor earlier this week.

Biden 'energetic, responsive' in meeting with Congressional caucus

Rep. Judy Chu, D-Calif., said in a statement that the virtual  Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus meeting with President Joe Biden Friday afternoon was "productive."

"President Biden heard our concerns and was energetic, responsive, and clear in communicating his messages and goals," she said. "I thank the President for taking the time to have this meeting and hear our concerns."

Rep. Mike Levin, D-Calif., calls on Biden to step aside

Rep. Mike Levin is the 18th House member to call for President Joe Biden to leave the presidential race. 

The California Democrat said in a statement that he has heard from "several hundred" constituents about Biden's debate performance, adding to his own concern about the president's candidacy. Levin added that Biden has been "an outstanding leader" but that it is time for him to "pass the torch."

"We must prevail against the incalcuable threat Donald Trump poses to the American institutions of freedom and democracy," he said. "Donald Trump actively seeks a bleak authoritarianism and the overthrow of the values which have guided us towards justice and prosperity for nearly two and a half centuries."

"Once again, our national mettle must be forged in the crucible of history. It is time to move forward. With a new leader. Together.”

Biden meeting with Congressional caucuses

President Joe Biden is meeting virtually with various congressional caucuses as a chaotic week on Capitol Hill winds down.

He is meeting this afternoon with the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus and will meet tomorrow with the Congressional Progressive Caucus, according to sources familiar with the meetings. 

He has also reportedly scheduled meetings with the centrist New Democrat Coalition and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. Biden met earlier this week with the Congressional Black Caucus.

Biden campaign glows about press conference, but was it enough?

President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign and his strongest allies came away pleased with Biden’s performance during his 59-minute press conference Thursday, convinced he passed the test demanded by his skeptics.

Yet it’s still unclear whether it was enough to stem the tide of Democratic detractors, with new Democrats in Congress on Friday calling for him to withdraw from the race.

The reviews from Biden world were glowing – that he showed a mastery of complex foreign policy issues, took the fight to Donald Trump and demonstrated he’s up for the rigor of the campaign.

“Honestly, I worried that Biden could only lose in this press conference. I was wrong. He comes out a winner. Big time,” Geoff Garin, a Biden pollster, wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

“You saw the president’s command of policy issues around the world,” Ron Klain, Biden’s former White House chief of staff, said Friday on MSNBC’s Morning Joe:”

Still, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, in a letter to Democratic colleagues Friday recounting his meeting with Biden after the debate, did not say whether he told Biden to stay in the race. Instead, Jeffries wrote that he “expressed the full breadth of insight, heartfelt perspectives and conclusion about the path forward” held by House Democrats.

Quentin Fulks, Biden’s deputy campaign manager, told MSNBC Friday that Biden and Jeffries “had a very good conversation, a substantive conversation,” but did not elaborate further.

Another House Democrat asks Biden to 'pass the torch'

Rep. Brittany Pettersen, D-Colo., released a statement Friday saying that Biden "saved our country once, and I'm joining the growing number of people in my district and across the country to ask him to do it again."

"Please pass the torch to one of our many capable Democratic leaders so we have the best chane to defeat Donald Trump, who is the greatest threat to the foundation of this country that we have ever faced."

Pettersen, a freshman Democrat, is the 17th member of her caucus to call for Biden to step aside, with a slow drip of announcements increasing in recent days. 

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries met with Biden last night

As the House Democratic caucus wrapped up a week of internal discussions over Biden's fitness to represent them on the November ballot, their leader met with President Joe Biden, according to a letter released by his team Friday morning. 

Jeffries said he "request and was graciously granted" a private meeting with Biden last night, during which he "directly expressed the full breadth of insight, heartfelt perspectives and conclusions about the path forward that the Caucus has shared in our recent time together."

He concluded the letter noting that House Democrats will "continue to work in the best interests of everyday Americans."

Jeffries and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer have been listening to their members throughout the week but have not publicly pushed for an outcome in the debate over whether Biden should remain the nominee. Both have publicly stated they are personally supportive of Biden.

David Axelrod says Joe Biden’s team has sheltered him from reality  

Former Obama adviser David Axelrod said the debate around President Joe Biden’s candidacy is playing out publicly because his team has sheltered him from it in an appearance on CNN Thursday. 

He told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer that the president’s aids did not want to have conversations about his age, but that Biden’s debate performance became a “break glass situation.” 

During his NATO press conference Thursday, Biden said the only way he would exit the 2024 race is if his team told him he could not win. Axelrod, who has grown increasingly critical of his campaign in recent weeks, responded in a social media post  saying his chances of winning reelection are “very very slim.” 

“If what he said at the end of his presser is true, it sounds like Biden's team has not been very candid with him about what the data is showing: the age issue is a huge and potentially insurmountable concern,” Axelrod said. 

Ashley Judd joins list calling for Biden's exit

Ashley Judd echoed fellow celebrities and a growing group of lawmakers calling for Biden to step back from the election. In a opinion piece published Friday, the 56-year-old actress said she believes Biden as nominee will not be able to defeat Republican opponent Trump.

"The defense of our cherished rights and freedoms, the moral imperative that we do better by more people, and our bodies, cannot be left to voters who see and are frightened of the consequences of President Biden's obvious limitations, or who are now not going to vote," Judd wrote. "We take the risk of an off night and minimize the warning signs at our gravest peril."

What is Biden's schedule today?

The president will leave the White House this afternoon for an evening campaign rally in Detroit, Michigan. 

Biden then heads home to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware later tonight.

Clyburn stays 'all in' on Biden

Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., credited with Biden's success in 2020, continued to defend the president and his decision to stay in the 2024 election.

"I am all in. I'm riding with Biden," Clyburn said, adding that he thinks conversation around Biden dropping out should conclude.

"... Let Joe Biden continue to make his own decisions about his future. He's earned that right, and I am going to give him that much respect."

Who could Democrats nominate if Biden drops out?  

Several names have been floated as replacements for the Democratic incumbent. Vice President Kamala Harris would most likely be the top choice, according to Reuters, but the outlet cites Harris’ difficult start to the job and poor polling numbers as potential hurdles.

Other names that have been mentioned include California Governor Gavin Newsom, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, who are also seen as viable contenders. These possible replacements are currently Biden supporters working to re-elect the president.

Despite the mounting calls, Biden remains defiant. “I’m getting so frustrated by the elites ... any of these guys that don’t think I should run, run against me. Announce for president, challenge me at the convention,” he told MSNBC earlier this week.

Will Biden be replaced?

Barring a very messy intra-party revolt, the Democratic presidential nomination  is Biden's to accept – or decline . And so far the president has pushed back on growing calls for his exit with seemingly no intention yet of stepping away.

If Biden were to change his mind and drop his bid for reelection, focus would then turn to finding a replacement for the top of the ticket. Vice President Kamala Harris, already first in line for the presidency, is a favored candidate for the position.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden, in a letter to congressional Democrats, stood firm against calls for him to drop his candidacy and called for an “end” to the intraparty drama that has torn apart Democrats since his dismal public debate performance.

Biden’s efforts to shore up a deeply anxious Democratic Party came Monday as lawmakers are returning to Washington and confronting a choice: decide whether to work to revive his campaign or edge out the party leader, a make-or-break time for his reelection and their own political futures.

Biden wrote in the two-page letter that “the question of how to move forward has been well-aired for over a week now. And it’s time for it to end.” He stressed that the party has “one job,” which is to defeat presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump in November.

“We have 42 days to the Democratic Convention and 119 days to the general election,” Biden said in the letter, distributed by his reelection campaign. “Any weakening of resolve or lack of clarity about the task ahead only helps Trump and hurts us. It’s time to come together, move forward as a unified party, and defeat Donald Trump.”

Anxiety is running high as top-ranking Democratic lawmakers are joining calls for Biden to step aside despite his defiance. At the same time, some of the president’s most staunch supporters are redoubling the fight for Biden’s presidency, insisting there’s no one better to beat Trump in what many see as among the most important elections of a lifetime.

As lawmakers weigh whether Biden should stay or go, there appear to be no easy answers.

It’s a tenuous and highly volatile juncture for the president’s party. Democrats who have worked alongside Biden for years — if not decades — and cherished his life’s work on policy priorities are now entertaining uncomfortable questions about his political future. And it’s unfolding as Biden hosts world leaders for the NATO summit this week in Washington.

Time is not on their side, almost a month from the Democratic National Convention and just a week before Republicans gather in Milwaukee to renominate Trump as their presidential pick. Many Democrats are arguing the attention needs to be focused instead on the former president’s felony conviction in the hush money case and pending federal charges in his effort to overturn the 2020 election.

It’s what Biden himself might call an inflection point. As he defiantly says he will only step aside if the Lord almighty comes and tells him to, Democrats in the House and Senate are deciding how hard they want to fight the president to change course, or if they want to change course at all.

In an effort to “get on the same page,” House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries is convening lawmakers for private meetings before he shows his own preference, according to a person familiar with the situation and granted anonymity to discuss it. He plans to gather Democrats on Monday whose bids for reelection are most vulnerable.

But a private call Sunday of some 15 top House committee members exposed the deepening divide as at least four more Democrats — Rep. Jerrold Nadler of New York, Rep. Jim Himes of Connecticut, Rep. Adam Smith of Washington state and Rep. Mark Takano of California — privately said Biden should step aside.

Nadler, as the most senior ranking member on the call, was the first person to speak up and say that Biden should step aside, according to a person familiar with the call who was granted anonymity to discuss it. He did so aware of his seniority and that it would allow others to join him.

Many others on the call raised concerns about Biden’s capability and chance of winning reelection, even if they stopped short of saying Biden should step out of the race.

Still other members, including Rep. Maxine Waters of California and Rep. Bobby Scott of Virginia, both leaders in the Congressional Black Caucus, spoke forcefully in support of Biden, as did Rep. Richard Neal of Massachusetts, the top Democrat on the powerful Ways and Means Committee.

And several lawmakers appeared frustrated that leadership was not providing direction or a path forward, according to people familiar with the call. One Democratic lawmaker said regardless of the decision, the situation has to “end now,” one of the people said.

Neal said afterward that the bottom line is Biden beat Trump in 2020 and “he’ll do it again in November.”

The upheaval also is testing a new generation of leaders, headed by Jeffries and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Both New Yorkers have refrained from publicly directing lawmakers on a path forward as they balance diverse opinions in their ranks.

Behind the scenes is Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, who continues to field calls from lawmakers seeking advice about the situation, and is widely viewed as the one to watch for any ultimate decision on Biden’s future because of her proximity to the president and vote-counting skills in party politics.

Pelosi spoke up last week, saying Biden’s debate performance raised “legitimate” questions he needed to answer, but she has remained supportive of the president. And Biden called her last week when he reached out to other party leaders.

When Biden’s prime-time ABC interview on Friday appeared to do little to calm worried Democrats, and some said made the situation worse, Pelosi stepped forward to publicly praise Biden on social media as a “great President who continues to deliver for America’s kitchen table.” She added, “and we’re not done yet!”

Schumer has kept a lower profile throughout the ordeal but will convene Democratic senators Tuesday for their weekly lunch when senators are certain to air many views.

One Democrat, Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia, had intended to gather senators Monday to discuss Biden privately, but a person familiar with his thinking said those conversations will take place in Tuesday’s regular caucus luncheon with all Democratic senators.

Another Democrat, Sen. Alex Padilla of California, said it was “time to quit the hand-wringing and get back to door knocking.”

Padilla spoke with Biden over the weekend, and urged his campaign to “let Joe be Joe.”

“Given the debate, I think the campaign has no choice,” Padilla said Sunday, explaining that Biden needs to hold town halls and unscripted events to show voters “the Joe Biden I know, and that most people in American have come to grow and love.”

While some deep-pocketed donors may be showing discomfort, strategists working on House and Senate races said they posted record fundraising as donors view congressional Democrats as a “firewall” and last line of defense against Trump.

House Democrats have had some of their better fundraising days yet, including a $3 million haul last Friday night after the debate at an event with former President Barack Obama and Jeffries in New York City. That’s on top of $1.3 million that rolled into the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee during the debate and its immediate aftermath.

Senate Democrats are also seeing a “surge” of support, according to a national Democrat with knowledge of Senate races.

As Democratic candidates campaign alongside Biden, the advice has been to focus on building their own brands and amplifying the way the work that’s done in Congress affects their local districts.

Teachers demand Superintendent address rising student violence at Garfield Heights schools

Teachers blame district leaders for lack of support, one plans to read resignation letter at next board meeting.

GARFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio (WOIO) - Rising student violence is forcing more teachers to resign from the Garfield Heights City School District. Many also say they’re not getting the support they need from administrators, and now they’re calling on the superintendent to take action.

After watching 19 Investigates’ reports documenting student fights , one former teacher who taught at the district for three decades spoke out at the last board meeting to address the violence. Another long-time teacher says she’s planning to read her resignation letter out loud at the next meeting ― hoping it sends a strong message to district leaders.

Brutal student fights at Garfield Heights schools are nothing new. They happen in every building and every grade level. By the end of the day, some teachers are literally beat.

“There’s definitely a problem,” said Lisa Granfors, who taught at the Garfield Heights City School District for the past 32 years.

Granfors resigned last year; two years shy of her original goal. She says that in recent years she has seen more violence and, as a result, more teachers getting hurt. Then, after watching our recent reports , she confronted district leaders at last month’s regular school board meeting .

“The reason I did want to speak is because of the concerns that I’ve seen on the news, on Channel 19,” said Granfors on June 17.

19 Investigates documented dozens of student fights erupting in classrooms, hallways and cafeterias. Sometimes, teachers got hurt while trying to break up those brawls ― forcing them to take what is referred to in their contracts as “assault leave”.

Recently, many teachers have chosen to leave the district altogether. In 2023, a total of 72 teachers resigned, according to minutes taken at the regular school board meetings. In the two years prior, only a fraction of that number resigned.

“I got up there because I want to see the change that can only come from good leadership,” said Granfors.

When asked whether teachers felt they could rely upon administrators to address their concerns, Granfors answered, ‘no’.

“There’s fear of retaliation,” Granfors added.

Granfors says Superintendent Richard Reynolds needs to address the situation before it’s too late.

“I’d like him to respond to the community and tell them what he’s going to do to make the city schools better,” said Granfors.

For months, 19 investigates reached out to Dr. Reynolds for comment. On July 3rd, he eventually emailed us saying quote,

“I would consider responding to a written list of questions in writing. I will be out of the office during the early part of July and can respond accordingly.” Dr. Richard Reynolds, Superintendent, Garfield Heights City School District

“I said the buck stops here,” Granfors said, referring to the night she addressed district leadership at the June meeting.

“You are where it stops and you have to make it happen, or you will get the credit or the blame,” Granfors said. “I will be there at the next board meeting to ask, ‘what are you doing? What is your plan?’”

The next school board meeting will be held on July 15th at 6pm at the Board of Education building, located at 5640 Briarcliff Drive in Garfield Heights.

Attempts to contact board members for comment have been unsuccessful.

Title Transfers and Changes

To prove vehicle ownership, it’s important to have a valid, up-to-date, and accurate California Certificate of Title. Here’s how you can transfer and change a title.

How to Transfer a Title

Anytime there’s a change to a vehicle or vessel’s registered owner or lienholder, that change must be updated in DMV’s records within 10 days and the California Certificate of Title must be transferred to the new owner.

A change in ownership is usually due to:

  • Sale, gift, or donation
  • Adding or deleting the name of an owner
  • Inheritance
  • Satisfaction of lien (full payment of car loan)

To transfer a title, you will need:

  • Either the California Certificate of Title or an Application for Replacement or Transfer of Title (REG 227) (if the title is missing). 
  • The signature(s) of seller(s) and lienholder (if any).
  • The signature(s) of buyer(s).
  • A transfer fee .

Depending on the type of transfer, you might need to complete and submit additional forms. See below for other title transfers and title transfer forms.

Other Title Transfers

When you’re buying a new car or a used car from a dealership, the dealer will handle the paperwork and you’ll receive your title from DMV in the mail.

When vehicle ownership is transferred between two private parties, it’s up to them to transfer the title. If you have the California Certificate of Title for the vehicle , the seller signs the title to release ownership of the vehicle. The buyer should then bring the signed title to a DMV office to apply for transfer of ownership. 

If you don’t have the California Certificate of Title , you need to use an Application for Replacement or Transfer of Title (REG 227) to transfer ownership. The lienholder’s release, if any, must be notarized. The buyer should then bring the completed form to a DMV office and we will issue a new registration and title.

Make sure you have all signatures on the proper lines to avoid delays.

Other Steps for the Seller When Vehicle Ownership is Transferred

  • 10 years old or older.
  • Commercial with a GVW or CGW of more than 16,000 pounds.
  • New and being transferred prior to its first retail sale by a dealer.
  • Complete a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability (NRL) within 5 days of releasing ownership and keep a copy for your records.

Once the seller gives the buyer all required documentation and DMV receives the completed NRL, the seller’s part of the transaction is complete.

*If the vehicle has been sold more than once with the same title, a REG 262 is required from each seller.

Other Steps for the Buyer When Vehicle Ownership is Transferred

  • Current registered owner(s), how names are joined (“and/or”), and lienholder/legal owner (if any).
  • License plate number, vehicle identification number (VIN), make, model, year, and registration expiration date.
  • Title brands (if any).
  • Words “Nontransferable/No California Title Issued,” indicating a California title was not issued and a REG 227 cannot be used (see FAQs).
  • Get a smog inspection (if applicable).

Once the buyer has provided the DMV with all the proper documents and fees, the vehicle record is updated to reflect the change of ownership and a registration card is issued.

A new title is issued from DMV headquarters within 60 calendar days.

To transfer a vehicle between family members, submit the following:

  • The California Certificate of Title properly signed or endorsed on line 1 by the registered owner(s) shown on the title. Complete the new owner information on the back of the title and sign it.
  • A Statement of Facts (REG 256) for use tax and smog exemption (if applicable).
  • Odometer disclosure for vehicles less than 10 years old.
  • Transfer fee .

You may transfer a vehicle from an individual to the estate of that individual without signatures on the Certificate of Title.

Submit the following:

  • The California Certificate of Title. On the back of the title, the new owner section must show “Estate of (name of individual)” and their address. Any legal owner/lienholder named on the front of the title must be re-entered on the back of the title.
  • A Statement of Facts (REG 256) confirming the owner is deceased and Letters Testamentary have not been issued. The person completing the statement must indicate their relationship to the deceased.

Use tax and a smog certification are not required.

Vehicle ownership can be transferred to a deceased owner’s heir 40 days after the owner’s death, as long as the value of the deceased’s property in California does not exceed:

  • $150,000 if the deceased died before 1/1/20.
  • $166,250 if the deceased died on or after 1/1/20.

If the heir will be the new owner, submit the following to a DMV office:

  • The California Certificate of Title. The heir must sign the deceased registered owner’s name and countersign on line 1. The heir should complete and sign the back of the title.
  • Affidavit for Transfer without Probate (REG 5) , completed and signed by the heir.
  • An original or certified copy of the death certificate of all deceased owners.

If the heir prefers to sell the vehicle, the buyer also needs (in addition to the items above):

  • Bill of Sale (REG 135) from the heir to the buyer.
  • Transfer fee (two transfer fees are due in this case).

To transfer vessel ownership, submit the following:

  • The California Certificate of Ownership. The registered owner signs line 1. The legal owner/lienholder (if any) signs line 2. Complete the new owner information on the back of the certificate and sign it.
  • Bill(s) of sale, if needed to establish a complete chain of ownership.
  • A Vessel Registration Fee .
  • Use tax based on the tax rate percentage for your county of residence.

After you sell a vessel, complete a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability (NRL) within five days of releasing ownership and keep a copy for your records.

How to Update or Change a Title

Because a California Certificate of Title is a legal document, it is important to keep it accurate and up-to-date. Here’s how you can update or change a title. 

Order a Replacement California Certificate of Title

You must order a replacement California Certificate of Title when the original is lost, stolen, damaged, illegible, or not received. 

To order a replacement title, submit the following:

  • Application for Replacement or Transfer of Title (REG 227) .
  • The original title (if you have it).
  • California photo driver license (if submitting form in person).
  • Replacement title fee .
  • If another replacement title was issued in the past 90 days, a Verification of Vehicle (REG 31) completed by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). This requirement only applies if the registered owner’s name or address doesn’t match DMV records*.

You’ll receive your title by mail 15-30 calendar days from the date you submit the replacement title application.

*If you’re applying for a replacement title and the registered owner’s name or address doesn’t match DMV records (except for obvious typographical errors), you must submit your application in person with proof of ownership (e.g. registration card) and an acceptable photo ID (e.g. driver’s license/ID card).

Change or Correct a Name on a Title

Your true full name must appear on your vehicle or vessel California Certificate of Title and registration card. If your name is misspelled, changes (e.g as a result of marriage or divorce), or is legally changed, you need to correct your name on your title.

To change or correct your name, submit:

  • California Certificate of Title with your correct name printed or typed in the “New Registered Owner” section
  • A completed Name Statement in Section F of the Statement of Facts (REG 256) .

Removing Information that was Entered by Mistake

If a name or other information is entered on a title by mistake, complete a Statement to Record Ownership (REG 101) .

Here are the Democratic lawmakers calling for Biden to step aside in the 2024 race

Washington — A growing number of Democratic lawmakers have begun to call for President Biden to withdraw from the race in the wake of his debate performance last month. This week on Capitol Hill, they have been weighing arguments about whether Mr. Biden should be the party's nominee. 

So far, 18 House Democrats and one Senate Democrat have directly called on the president to exit the race:

House members calling on Biden to exit presidential race

  • Lloyd Doggett of Texas : He became the first Democratic lawmaker to call on Mr. Biden to drop out, saying on July 2 that he was "hopeful that [Mr. Biden] will make the painful and difficult decision to withdraw." 
  • Raul Grijalva of Arizona : He told The New York Times on July 3 that what Mr. Biden "needs to do is shoulder the responsibility for keeping that seat — and part of that responsibility is to get out of this race."
  • Seth Moulton of Massachusetts: He told CBS Boston on July 7 that George Washington chose not to run for a third term, and Mr. Biden should follow that cue on another term. "I think that can be President Biden's legacy as well," Moulton said. "He defeated Donald Trump once and then he was willing to hand power over to a new generation of leaders. That's the kind of amazing legacy that a great president like Biden deserves."
  • Mike Quigley of Illinois : Quigley said on MSNBC on July 5, "Mr. President, your legacy is set. We owe you the greatest debt of gratitude. The only thing that you can do now to cement that for all time and prevent utter catastrophe is to step down and let someone else do this."
  • Angie Craig of Minnesota: Craig, who represents a key swing district, said in a statement on July 6, "This is not a decision I've come to lightly, but there is simply too much at stake to risk a second Donald Trump presidency. That's why I respectfully call on President Biden to step aside as the Democratic nominee for a second term as President and allow for a new generation of leaders to step forward."
  • Adam Smith of Washington: Smith on July 8 called on Mr. Biden to end his candidacy "as soon as possible." He said in a statement that presidential candidates "must be able to clearly, articulately, and strongly make his or her case to the American people. It is clear that President Biden is no longer able to meet this burden." Smith told CBS News that if Biden announced he was ending his bid, "there would be a huge sigh of relief amongst just about every Democrat in the House." 
  • Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey: In a statement posted to social media July 9 following a closed-door meeting among House Democrats, Sherrill praised Mr. Biden's presidency but said she was asking that he "declare that he won't run for reelection and will help lead us through a process toward a new nominee." Sherrill said the "stakes are too high — and the threat is too real — to stay silent."
  • Pat Ryan of New York: He said in a social media post on July 10 that he's "asking Joe Biden to step aside" in the upcoming election to "deliver on his promise to be a bridge to a new generation of leaders." The vulnerable House Democrat said, "Joe Biden is a patriot but is no longer the best candidate to defeat Trump."
  • Earl Blumenauer of Oregon: On July 10, Blumenauer wrote in a statement that he hoped Mr. Biden and first lady Jill Biden had "come to the conclusion that I and others have: President Biden should not be the Democratic presidential nominee." The 75-year-old congressman, who has served in the House since 1996, declared that "there is no question in my mind that we will all be better served if the president steps aside as the Democratic nominee and manages a transition under his terms. He has earned that right."
  • Hillary Scholten of Michigan: In a statement posted to social media on July 11, Scholten praised Mr. Biden's first-term accomplishments, but said that "for the good of our democracy, I believe it is time for him to step aside from the presidential race and allow a new leader to step up." The congresswoman said that if Mr. Biden decides to continue his campaign, she will vote for him but believes "it's time to pass the torch."
  • Brad Schneider of Illinois: On July 11, Schneider said in a statement that it's time for "Biden to heroically pass the torch to a new generation of leadership," which he said would give the president a chance to "seal his place in history as one of the greatest leaders our nation, and history, has ever known."
  • Ed Case of Hawaii: Case said in a July 11 statement that his decision to call on the president to withdraw "has nothing to do with his character and record," but Mr. Biden's "ability to continue in the most difficult job in the world for another four-year term." 
  • Greg Stanton of Arizona: The congressman said in a statement on social media, "For the sake of American democracy, and to continue to make progress on our shared priorities, I believe it is time for the president to step aside as our nominee."
  • Jim Himes of Connecticut: The ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee called on the president to withdraw after his  solo NATO news conference  on July 11. "Joe Biden's record of public service is unrivaled," Himes said. "His accomplishments are immense. His legacy as a great president is secure. He must not risk that legacy." 
  • Scott Peters of California: In a statement issued after Mr. Biden's July 11 news conference, Peters said, "The stakes are high, and we are on a losing course. ... We must find a candidate from our deep bench of talent who can defeat Donald Trump."
  • Eric Sorensen of Illinois:  In a post on social media following Mr. Biden's news conference to conclude the NATO summit on July 11, Sorensen wrote , "In 2020, Joe Biden ran for President with the purpose of putting country over party. Today, I am asking him to do that again. ... I am hopeful President Biden will step aside in his campaign for President."
  • Brittany Pettersen of Colorado : On July 12, Pettersen shared a statement  on her social media account urging Mr. Biden to step aside from the presidential race. She said he "saved our country once, and I'm joining the growing number of people in my district and across the country to ask him to do it again. Please pass the torch to one of our many capable Democratic leaders so we have the best chance to defeat Donald Trump."
  • Mike Levin of California : Levin praised Mr. Biden's leadership and said he has respect for his decades in public services, but said in a statement that "the time has come for President Biden to pass the torch." The California Democrat went on to say that "it is time to move forward. With a new leader. Together."

Senators calling on Biden to exit presidential race

  • Peter Welch  of Vermont:  In an op-ed that appeared in the Washington Post on July 10, Welch became the first senator to publicly call on Mr. Biden to drop out. "For the good of the country, I'm calling on President Biden to withdraw from the race," he wrote. Welch argued that "the national conversation is focused on President Biden's age and capacity. Only he can change it."

Still, more congressional Democrats have publicly expressed support for Mr. Biden since the debate. And in recent days, some lawmakers have called for the party to unequivocally back the president, including prominent members of the powerful Congressional Black Caucus.

As lawmakers prepared to return to Washington after the July Fourth recess, a group of senior House Democrats met with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries over Zoom Sunday night, where a person on the call and three people familiar with the meeting told CBS News that three more lawmakers said Mr. Biden should leave the race: 

  • Jerry Nadler of New York
  • Mark Takano of California 
  • Joe Morelle of New York

But by Tuesday, Nadler said that he's "fully supportive" of Mr. Biden, and added that he was not going to "comment on what I said in a private meeting."  

"All I'll say is the president made very clear yesterday that he's running," Nadler said. "And to me that's dispositive, we have to support him."

An aide to Jeffries confirmed to CBS News on Wednesday that Jeffries plans to convey the growing concerns of the caucus directly to Mr. Biden by Friday. 

Mr. Biden has been working to address concerns about his ability to serve another term with a number of appearances in recent days, making clear his intention to stay in the race at every turn — from a highly anticipated interview with ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos last week to rallies in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania over the holiday weekend. 

On Monday, the president sent a letter to Democrats in Congress saying he is "firmly committed" to staying in the race and making clear that "I wouldn't be running again if I did not absolutely believe I was the best person to beat Donald Trump in 2024."

The president aimed to shut down discussions about replacing him, arguing that "the voters of the Democratic Party have voted," and had selected him as their presumptive nominee. In March, he surpassed the number of delegates needed to clinch the Democratic Party's nomination, and now has secured 3,896 delegates. There are 1,976 delegates needed to secure the Democratic nomination at the convention in August. Mr. Biden warned that forcing him off the ticket would subvert the will of the voters: "How can we stand for democracy in our nation if we ignore it in our own party?"

Mr. Biden also called into "Morning Joe" on Monday, saying "I'm more than presumptive, I'm gonna be the Democratic nominee." He expressed frustration with "the elites" doubting his fitness for another term, saying "any of these guys that don't think I should run — run against me. Go ahead, announce for President. Challenge me at the convention."

The president has also made outreach efforts in recent days, with a campaign official saying he personally made 20 calls to congressional members since the debate.
