How to create powerful presentations with Adobe Express

Jackie Dove

With the brand new version of Spark Video, Adobe continues to lure consumers into photographer and designer territory via its creative mobile and web apps. The Spark collection , featuring the newly updated Spark Video (now called Adobe Express ), is targeted not to the advanced Photoshop/Lightroom crowd, but to just plain folks—kids, teachers, neighbors, community activists, and small businesses who have something to say.

Adobe Express (which began life as Adobe Voice and then was called Spark Video, and earlier this year acquired its current branding ) provides the tools to create a sophisticated social media presence complete with presentation prowess for those without an art degree, a pocketful of cash, or time on their hands.

Adobe has updated Spark Video for the web, iPhone, and iPad by adding a video component. Previously, the app let you use a mixture of voice recordings, photos and icons, and a soundtrack to quickly create an inspiring, template-based animated presentation with a combination of your own assets and some help from online royalty free sources.

If you’re intent on creating marketing videos, school projects, product demos, event invites, business or team reports, or just plain storytelling, here’s how to do it with the video-enhanced latest version.

Before you begin, sign in with your free Adobe ID or log in using a Facebook or Google account. This lets Adobe publish and host your presentations, so you can easily access and share them. I used an iPad in this demo, but operations are similar on the iPhone and with the online app.

1. Choose a story template

Either pick a story template or start from scratch. Story templates get beginners started with a major concept: Promote an Idea, Tell What Happened, Personal Growth, An Invitation, and more. If you’re just getting started, using a template is optimal.

2. Add photos and video

You can use photos that are already on your device, or select them from Google Photos, Dropbox, Facebook, Lightroom, or your Creative Cloud space. You can also use Spark Video’s search feature to find Creative Commons licensed photos and icons online. If you are creating your project on an iPhone or iPad, videos must be present on your device.

3. Add voice narration

Adobe Spark Video makes it easy to add voiceovers to each slide. Just press and hold the microphone button. Speak clearly and make sure your mic is clear from obstruction and that the room has a minimum of distracting noise. You can easily re-record any slide if you’re not satisfied with the sound quality. Just navigate to the slide and record it again—the new recording will automatically replace the old one.

4. Working with video

Import video into your project just like any photo or illustration. Spark knows it’s a video file and immediately offers a way to trim its start and end points. Any clip can be distributed among multiple slides and trimmed to various durations. To do that, tap the Continue button (the middle button on the right side of the frame) to break up a clip into a new slide. The limit is 30 seconds per frame.

You can adjust the volume or mute a clip with the volume button. Spark can also automatically align the video clip to the length of your narration. Or you can add a music track.

5. Fill the slides

Each slide of a template presentation gives you a hint of what kind of content it could contain. You don’t have to adhere to the formula, but it is helpful for beginners. You can express your idea with video, stills, text, icon, or a combination. Spark Video gives you four layout choices for each slide: Full screen + Thing, One thing, Thing + Caption and Two things. The first two can include video, the rest a combination of text, photo, and icon.

6. Add a theme

Themes provide the visual punch of your message. You can add a theme at any point, but waiting until you load all your content may help narrow down the choices among the 32 built-in themes. Tapping each theme gives you a brief preview and you can try out any theme you want before committing to it. The arrow on the bottom left side lets you view your creation with any template and music and switch them around until you like what you see.

7. Theme Lab

Each theme offers various ways to customize with different colors, background, icons, main text, and secondary text complete with a dozen font choices. You can apply variations to specific slides or to the entire presentation, though not every variation is available for every theme.

8. Add music

Music will likely be the most evocative part of your presentation. Adobe includes a varied selection of instrumental tunes for different moods from happy, playful, and relaxed to rousing, thoughtful, uplifting and more. Or you can choose from your own music.

9. Tweak away

Just because you have filled in the template does not mean the presentation is set in stone. You can easily add, remove, replace, or reorder slides.

One thing that’s a drag: The last slide automatically reads Made with Adobe Spark Video and lists the website URL, which you can’t remove—unless you are a Creative Cloud subscriber. This is designed as an exclusive feature for Creative Cloud subscribers, but it is currently available for a limited time to all users, but only via the web app—not your mobile device.

10. Share your video

When you’re satisfied with your work and ready to share it, Spark Video makes it easy to post to Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter, or share via Message or email, as well as save it to the clipboard or your camera roll. Specify the general target audience by categorizing it as Business, Causes, Education, How-to, Lifestyle and more. You can add photo and video credits and author credit. You can also toggle on the optional Get Noticed control that allows your project to appear in search engine results and on the Adobe Spark website.

Available now

Adobe Spark Video is free online and available on the App Store for both iPhone and iPad. You need a free Adobe ID to access the app or update, but you do not need a paid Adobe subscription. If you need more than the allotted 2GB of Creative Cloud file storage, you can enable an in-app purchase of an additional 20GB for $2 per month, which will be automatically charged to your iTunes account.

  • Choose a theme and create your title slide. Head over to CC Express and select the presentation option. Start from scratch or choose a theme or template to work with. Then, add title text and a background image. With photos, you can upload one directly from your computer or import them through Lightroom, Dropbox or Google Photos. If you have photos stored in your Creative Cloud Library, these images can also be added to the presentation.
  • Add more content. Text conveys important information. Make certain lines stand out by using H1, H2 or quote features. Buttons give you a space to link to another website. Videos engage your audience, and you can link content from YouTube, Vimeo or even a short video you’ve made with CC Express! Photo grids give you the chance to show off a collection of pictures. With this function, you can adjust the size and display of your images. Glideshows add more flair to your pictures. With fluid motions and animations, your images and text captions will move across the screen.
  • Publish your presentation Once you’ve finished your presentation, publish it and send it out with a shareable link. Even after the presentation has been published, you can make edits and continue improving your work.

Stencil  is a great tool for creating easily shareable images tailored for social media, small business owners, and bloggers. Stencil's focus is to make image creation easy with a free all-in-one app. It has an impressive stock photo library available to both free and premium users, and creating images for social media or blog posts is intuitive. The actions are simple clicks and drag-and-drop functions that users of all tech and graphic design levels will recognize.

Posting images is simplified through several convenient features. Users can directly send images via SMS or post them to Facebook or Instagram feeds through login integration. Additionally, there's an option to connect with a Buffer account to schedule posts after creation. Stencil's free option allows users to save 10 images per month with access to a limited stock library. It won't be enough for a full-time blogger, but it's a great test drive. Unlocking everything Stencil has to offer costs $12 per month or a yearly fee of $86.40. This essentially removes all limitations and gives full access to its stock library. There are no other microtransactions or add-ons.

Snappa is another great alternative to Canva, especially if you're not a graphic designer. Its user interface is remarkably user-friendly, with easy adjustments made through simple sliders and menus. Snappa has over 6,000 templates to get started with, as well as an impressive library of free images and graphics. The images provided are royalty-free and can be used for any project without incurring additional costs.

The downside to Snappa's simplicity and ease of use is that graphic designers may find it lacks the functionality of some of the other services on this list. It's ideal for beginners and those who need an image but don't have any idea how to make one.

Snappa's free version functions more like a trial, granting access to all templates and images but limiting users to only three downloads per month. Access to all other features requires a paid account, which is priced at $15 per month or $120 annually -- equivalent to $10 per month.

Adobe Express

While the AI image creator Adobe Firefly has been getting most of the press these days, Adobe still has plenty of traditional image editing tools available. One of the most affordable is  Adobe Express , an entry-level software that's ideal for those unfamiliar with Adobe's range of products and as a user-friendly image creation and editing tool.

You'll find many of the standard Adobe tools you would with Photoshop and other Adobe products , but they have been streamlined for ease of use for beginners. Users can quickly create images for social media and smaller projects with ease. Included are numerous templates that can be customized for different projects, as well as options for creating vector images.

The free version of Adobe Express provides users with a limited capacity for image generation each month and offers access to a basic range of templates and stock photos. For those who want more comprehensive features, there's a premium subscription available at $100 per year or $10 per month that unlocks full access to all tools and an extensive stock library.

Adobe Express is much more intuitive and easy to use than Photoshop, making it a good starting point for beginners. However, those without any design experience may find it a bit challenging. In addition, more experienced users will find it easy to use but less comprehensive than Photoshop.

If you're looking for a powerful no-frills editor, Pixlr X is a great place to start. It's completely free, although the website monetizes itself through ads. However, this means you don't even have to make an account and can jump right into editing and content creation.

As a free product, Pixlr X offers its complete range of features through a web app. The app itself has a streamlined interface with menus that provide a wide array of customization tools and options, allowing precise image alterations according to user preferences.

The software includes templates and settings for virtually every need. It features ready-made templates for popular social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitch, allowing users to create perfectly sized images right from the start. Additionally, Pixlr offers templates for podcast cover art and much more.

The user interface of Pixlr X is clean and uncluttered, without any distracting graphics. It presents a simple menu packed with various editing options. The toolset is comprehensive, making it easy for beginners to use while also offering enough advanced features to satisfy experienced users and graphic designers.

VistaCreate is an excellent tool for creating visual marketing materials and ads for your business. The platform is designed to be easy to use and user-friendly while still providing visually impressive results. It offers templates for different seasons and industries that users can easily alter and customize to quickly create promotional materials, even if they lack an eye for design. Included with the editor is a massive library of tools like stock photos, videos, logos, fonts, and more that all can be used for free without licensing issues.

Signing up for the premium membership unlocks all of the available templates and graphics. Most users won't be stunted by the offerings from the free version, but the premium version has significantly more variety. If you want to try it before you buy, VistaCreate does offer a 14-day trial that gives access to the premium version. However, this trial requires a credit card entry, so you need to remember to cancel before the trial period ends to avoid charges.

The free version is free forever. It offers a respectable 10 GB of storage for projects and files. The premium version has unlimited storage, more templates and graphics, and access to unique tools like a background remover and instant sticker makers. VistaCreate premium costs $13 per month or $10 per month if paid annually.

Visme is a fantastic and incredibly versatile tool. It's a single app that can do most things that you'd want from an image editor, plus a few extra features that go beyond simple image content creation and editing.

Like many other platforms, it has a host of templates, fonts, and stock images that make it easy to create brandable materials, social media posts, and digital media. However, in addition to the simple image editor, Visme also has a lot of intuitive tools for small businesses. Users can easily upload data from spreadsheets and graph it visually using a simple, drag-and-drop interface that can readily be branded. Images and content you create on Visme can also be turned into videos and edited directly on the platform.

The only downside to Visme is its price. The website offers a free version that allows you to take the system for a test drive, but it doesn't allow you to export any of the files that you create. While there may be workarounds, it may be better to consider purchasing a membership or choosing another service from this list. The Starter membership costs $12.25 per month when paid annually, or $29 monthly, and the Pro membership costs $24.75 per month when paid annually, or $59 billed monthly. Although this pricing is on the higher end compared to other services, Visme's comprehensive all-in-one solution justifies the cost for many users.

If you need infographics, PowerPoint presentations, or short videos, then Piktochart is one of the best alternatives to Canva. The platform doesn't concentrate on pure image design and generation. Instead, it focuses on bringing data to life through fun and interesting infographics.

For businesses that generate significant traffic through social media or understand the value of SEO, Piktochart recognizes that a well-crafted infographic can be a powerful asset. Its tools and templates are designed to present data in a visually attractive manner, highlighting key points. All of Piktochart's tools and templates present data in visually appealing ways while still clearly showing key data points. The user interface is very user-friendly and comes with tutorials on every aspect of the system. There's even a quick crash course that claims can get you up and running within an hour.

Piktochart also has rudimentary video editors that are surprisingly easy to edit. While it may not offer the extensive functionality of dedicated video editing software, it meets the needs of most users. There's also the option to quickly turn images into PowerPoint presentations and videos, making it an excellent choice for office workers. Piktochart is free but only offers limited online storage options. It's essentially a forever-free trial that allows users to get started with the system and determine if they can make use of it. The paid version costs $14 per month when paying annually or $29 monthly.

The makers of DesignCap took all the fun aspects of making a poster or collage for grade school and turned it into software. Surprisingly, the software is known for its ease of use, making image creation as straightforward as those school projects.

DesignCap presents itself as a one-stop shop for all of your design needs, but in reality, it works better if you look at it like a poster maker. The platform can help users create simple images using templates and tools for social media posts, cards, wedding invitations, posters, and social media.

While it's not advanced enough for a professional graphic designer, it is ideal for someone who needs to make some eye-catching visuals. The free version has a smaller library of templates and stock photos available and is limited to five image saves. The only other limitation is export file formats. It has fewer options than some of the others on this list, but if you just need JPEGs to post or create images quickly, DesignCap is a great resource.

For more advanced users on a budget, Photopea is a fantastic solution. Photopea is not specifically tailored for bloggers or social media users -- instead, it is fundamentally an image editor. This focus on image editing first is reflected in its user interface and color scheme, which might not be specifically designed for bloggers and influencers but still offers useful functionality for them. The UI is very bare bones, devoid of any testimonials or marketing trying to upsell users.

Upon visiting the Photopea site, users can immediately upload and start editing images. The more you use Photopea, the more functionality you'll discover in the software. Users can create vector images, create layers, apply filters, and so much more. There's a dedicated tutorial section of the site to help users navigate the numerous features. If you can't find the answer there, Photopea also has a very active Reddit community as well as email support.

Photopea is unique in that beginners can do all of the simple editing that they'll need, while advanced graphic designers will also find a lot of useful tools to make something truly memorable. Photopea is a free service that supports itself through ads. Users have the option to purchase a premium membership, which removes ads and supports the developers. The free version already provides full access to all features, although premium users benefit from prioritized email support.

Desygner is a budget-friendly alternative to Canva that was specifically designed to be a more user-friendly alternative to Adobe InDesign. Desygner has intuitive controls that allow users to easily choose and modify templates. Like many of the other alternatives on this list, it comes equipped with a large stock image and template library that is free to use for commercial and personal use.

One of its best features is its PDF editor. All of the easy-to-use tools can be used to edit and alter PDFs to create impressive documents. These are perfect for flyers, notices, resumes, and much more. This task can often be tricky in standard word processors, but Desygner simplifies it with the same tools used for image creation. Another standout feature of Desygner is its background removal tool. If you've been creating images for a business, you'll know how essential this feature is, not to mention how frustrating it can be when it doesn't work well.

In terms of affordability, Desygner is very budget-friendly. Its pricing is among the most economical on this list, at approximately $5 per month when paid annually or $10 paid monthly. The free version of Desygner provides access to many of its tools and templates. While the free version is sufficient for smaller businesses and casual users, the premium version is a worthwhile investment for regular image creators. It includes the background remover tool and offers a significantly larger selection of stock images and templates.

Spice up learning with a video presentation.

As the world shifts toward the virtual classroom, teaching and education tools are moving into digital spaces, as well. With video presentations, students and educators alike have a powerful resource to make learning exciting and fun.

For educators, a video presentation can help introduce topics visually and hold the attention of a class longer. For students, video presentation projects draw on creative and analytical skills that they’ll use throughout their lives.

Go beyond simple PowerPoint slides and explore how Adobe Premiere Pro can help any video presentation maker create their own videos and live presentations that compel audiences with video, animation effects, and more.

Limitless video presentation ideas for any creative occasion.

In a virtual learning environment, students are exposed to limitless knowledge with the drop of a link. Videos offer digestible amounts of information that students can rewatch later to help retain new knowledge.

For teachers, video presentations add variety to teaching materials, which can help keep eyes on the lecture screen instead of the phone screen. Making video presentations can help both students and teachers express themselves, share ideas, and make meaningful learning progress.

Expand the possibilities of virtual learning for students.

Some subject matters lend themselves better to a video presentation than other teaching formats. For example:

  • Real-world events and experiences: Watch a video tour of the Parthenon ruins in Greece or experience rare green mambas hatching from their eggs in West Africa.
  • Art, creativity, and visual skills: Learn about painting, drawing, geometry, and more with visual aids to help better understand the topic.
  • Complex or technical topics: Get a 3D view of the human skeleton to help learn about anatomy, or show all of the elements of the periodic table in action.

Person looking down at their laptop watching a leather-working video

Make teaching more accessible and engaging.

Keeping students interested can be a challenge, especially in a virtual classroom setting. Try using videos to change up your course content — and give you a break from lecturing. But, entertaining as videos may be, there are lots of other good reasons to use them in the classroom:

  • Inclusivity: Online video presentations with subtitles can accommodate all audiences, including students with hearing impairment. Subtitles can also help students who are learning a new language better understand their teachers.
  • Information retention: Smaller chunks of information tend to be easier for learners to remember. Engaging visuals can help overcome learning curves so students can grasp concepts more easily.
  • Time efficiency: A brief  explainer video  or short clip can save you time with lesson planning and help share information from experts in their fields.
  • Effortless studying: Students can revisit and rewatch videos outside of the classroom and have time to reprocess the course material.

Types of video presentations.

There’s no limit to what you can create with your video presentation, from a video of you dancing the cha-cha to an animated infographic, or even funny GIFs for a dose of comic relief. Here are a few types of videos you can make yourself — or find online — to use in the classroom:

  • Personal narratives: As a class assignment, a personal narrative video can help students learn about themselves and each other. Or, share a personal narrative of people related to the subject you’re teaching.
  • Instructional videos: Step-by-step tutorials are a versatile way to break down complicated topics. Try making a how-to video on linear algebra, novel writing, or even a DIY art project.
  • YouTube videos: Try using a YouTube video in your presentation slides to connect with younger students in their own language. Many YouTube stars cover educational topics . Or, within a larger video presentation, pop in a short video or two from credible YouTubers to help students stay attentive.

The makings of an engaging video lesson.

Whether you're a student with a video project assignment or a teacher looking to change up your lesson plan, a solid outline will help you or your students create a cohesive video presentation. Start by writing an outline that includes the following:

1. Introduction of your topic:

Hook your audience with an exciting story, fact, or anecdote about your topic.

2. Agenda or overview:

Provide a slide of the talking points you will be sharing with your audience so they can see the full breadth of the presentation.

3. Explain your topic or subject:

Tell the audience about the most important aspects of your topic as you work your way through the sections you presented in your overview.

4. Examples and discussion points:

Get practical on your topic and dive into detail to get the conversation going.

5. Conclusion:

Wrap up your presentation with any last remarks or touch back on the theme of your presentation.

Use Adobe Premiere Pro to create your presentation.

You don’t need a vast knowledge of video editing software to craft a quality video presentation. Adobe Premiere Pro features many video and presentation tools that you can use to customize and finalize your video. Choose from several themed video and presentation templates, slide transitions, and features that let you add subtitles , music, and much more.

Polish off your video by adding some creative components.

Take your video presentation to the next level with these creative tips:

Two images side by side: one of a leather chair with personal accessory items laid out on it and one of a person taking a photo with an audio soundwave file superimposed over it

Editing ideas:

  • Select short clips : Pick a quick video clip to add variety as a visual aid, but keep it bite-sized so it’s easier for your audience to grasp. You can add video files and clips easily in Premiere Pro and use video templates to speed up that work.
  • Add transitions : Premiere Pro features many fun transitions and animated effects you can use within your presentations to keep your audience’s attention.
  • Throw in some music: Sometimes a little background music can make a presentation more engaging. Keep the tempo up by adding a tune.

Add the final touches:

  • Choose a color scheme or overall design: Slideshow and presentation templates can help you unify the color and theme of your presentations to ensure nothing distracts the viewer. Customization controls can help you update those color schemes too.
  • Use stock images: Select a few stock images as visual aids to place throughout your presentation to add high-quality visuals to your piece.

Top Questions

No, the desktop applications in Creative Cloud, such as Photoshop and Illustrator, are installed directly on your computer, so you don't need an ongoing Internet connection to use them.

An Internet connection is required the first time you install and license your apps, but you can use the apps in offline mode with a valid software license. The desktop apps will attempt to validate your software licenses every 30 days.

Annual members can use the apps for up to 99 days in offline mode. Month-to-month members can use the software for up to 30 days in offline mode.

Your Creative Cloud files are stored on your desktop as well as on the Creative Cloud servers. If you cancel or downgrade your paid membership, you will still have access to all of the files in the Creative Cloud folder on your computer and via the Creative Cloud website.

Your account will be downgraded to a free membership, which includes 2GB of storage. If you’re using more than 2GB of storage, you will not be able to upload any new files to the cloud until the amount of online space used in your account drops below your allotted amount.

If you are over your storage limit, you have 90 days to reduce your online usage or you may lose access to some or all of your files saved on the Creative Cloud servers.

No, you can continue using your current version of the product as long as you have an active membership. You have flexibility on when and if you install a new release.

Students and teachers can purchase Creative Cloud at a discounted price. See the  Students and Teachers plans page .
