Mission & Aims of the Program

Fielding’s APA accredited Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program is strongly aligned with the university’s mission to create a more humane, just, and sustainable world, and the university’s values that include academic excellence, community, diversity, and social justice.

Consistent with these values, a core mission of our program is to foster the inclusion of students from under-represented populations. These populations include students living in small communities, rural, or remote locations of the United States, students currently in the military or spouses of military members, adult learners with families, and students whose ongoing participation in their current communities cannot be halted for doctoral study elsewhere. These are student populations who are often unable to enter the field through preparation at a traditional university campus, yet these are the future psychologists for which the discipline and profession have expressed an urgent need.

In addition, our program aims to graduate entry-level scholar-practitioner psychologists who bring social justice values to their work as licensed health service professionals. Consistent with this overarching aim, we have four specific aims for our students, which must be achieved by the time of graduation.

• Students will demonstrate doctoral-level discipline-specific knowledge that represents the scientific and theoretical knowledge areas of the discipline of psychology (i.e., history and systems of psychology and the affective, biological, cognitive, developmental, and social bases of behavior).
• Students will demonstrate doctoral-level conceptualization, evaluation, analysis, and integration of discipline-specific knowledge across the curriculum.
• Students will demonstrate doctoral-level ability to understand and critique research; design, conduct, analyze, and communicate theoretically informed research; and conduct research in a manner that is culturally sensitive and consistent with legal code and ethical standards, including the APA ethics code.
• Students will demonstrate doctoral-level competence in the profession-wide competencies, including conducting an evidence-based diagnosis, assessment, and psychotherapy; and applying theory and research to develop case conceptualizations, treatment plans, and interventions that are consistent with legal and ethical standards and individual and cultural diversity factors.

Serving adults, many of whom have trained or worked in the mental health field, our unique distributed learning model blends the best of face-to-face learning opportunities with digital formats.

Faculty are active scholars and practitioners with a wide variety of expertise, which allows us to offer specialized concentrations and training in a variety of therapeutic orientations.

Geographic Eligibility

The program only considers applicants who reside in the contiguous United States and Canada. The program is not available to those residing internationally (except Canada). Applicants from Alaska and Hawaii may be considered pending confirmation of their ability and resources to attend local professional development seminars in contiguous U.S. on a regular basis, access to acceptable practicum training sites, and ability to relocate for internship. Liberty offers six specializations, including social psychology and developmental psychology. Learners conduct their own research, with the opportunity to present their work at conferences. Optional on-campus intensive courses allow students to deepen their academic and professional skills alongside faculty and classmates.

The school offers hybrid and fully online programming. Online learners have access to technical support and academic counseling. With courses held in eight-week terms, students can complete the program in as little as 36 months.

Keiser also offers a baccalaureate entry path; admitted students only need a bachelor’s degree before starting their Ph.D.

With an optional self-design track, learners can customize their specialization courses.

The blended program features a mix of online synchronous activities, like webinars and team projects, as well as asynchronous discussion boards, readings, and pre-recorded lectures. Program graduates complete 900 hours of supervised field training: a 600-hour practicum and 300-hour internship. Practicum sites include Comcast and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Learners without a master’s degree can enroll in a 90-credit post-bachelor’s program; those with a master’s degree in a related field can finish in as little as three years. To graduate, learners must pass a comprehensive exam and complete a dissertation in addition to a 200-hour social justice practicum at an aligned community site.

While an online psychology doctoral degree has its upsides, it isn’t the right move for everyone. In light of the huge commitment of time and money—to say nothing of effort—think hard about factors like budget, scheduling and learning style.

Online doctoral programs often cost less than campus programs since they allow you to save on big-ticket expenses like housing and transportation. Plus, some state schools extend in-state tuition rates to all online learners, regardless of their state residency status.

Online learning provides flexibility to work around work and family obligations. However, some programs mix asynchronous lessons with synchronous events like discussion groups.

Remote learning works well for disciplined self-starters. But if you need the accountability and support that come with in-person learning, an online doctoral program might not be a good fit for you.

There are two kinds of accreditation to consider in online psychology doctoral programs: institutional and programmatic.

Institutional accreditation is given by bodies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council of Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). To receive federal financial aid, you must attend an accredited institution. Several institutions on this list have earned accreditation by regional agencies like SACSCOC or the Higher Learning Commission.

Programmatic accreditation proves that a degree has been vetted to meet certain academic standards. The primary accreditor for post-graduate psychology programs in the U.S. is the American Psychology Association (APA), which accredits Ph.D. and Pys.D. programs. Consider Your Future Goals

To choose the best program for you, think through your long-term career goals. This helps inform whether you should pursue a Psy.D. or Ph.D. and what kind of field experience you may need to complete.

Programs vary in their focus on clinical application of psychological principles versus research and classroom instruction. For example, William James College’s Pys.D. in leadership psychology allows learners to work an additional 150 practicum hours beyond the program requirement. The extra hands-on experience could help you prepare for more specialized psychology careers .

A degree from an APA-accredited program is required for some employment opportunities and, in some states, licensure. If you intend to become a licensed psychologist after graduation, make sure your program prepares you for this path.

The programs on this list vary greatly in terms of cost. On the high end, the Chicago School at Los Angeles charges $1,703 per credit. At $528 per credit, Keiser University-Ft. Clinical Psychology PhD

The PhD in Clinical Psychology is an American Psychological Association (APA) accredited program, and also a program member of the Council of University Directors of Clinical Psychology (CUDCP). The program adheres to the scientist/practitioner model of training, and requires a number of clinical and research practica in addition to an extensive course curriculum.

• It is a four-year plus internship, full-time program.
• It emphasizes a thorough preparation in theoretical psychology and methodology.
• Theoretical foundations in personality and psychopathology are explored prior to behavioral and personality assessment.
• Concurrent with the work in assessment, students begin study of the theory, research, and practice of psychotherapy.

Admission requirements

This program is open to applications from those who hold an undergraduate degree in psychology or have taken the required number of psychology credits (18). The requirement of 18 undergraduate credits includes statistics and 15 additional credits, preferably introductory psychology, developmental psychology, experimental psychology, and social psychology.

Students are selected from a pool of academically qualified applicants who can contribute to the diversity of the student body. Students enrolled in the clinical psychology program come from diverse ethnic, cultural, individual and experiential backgrounds. Applications are encouraged from those identifying with cultural and/or individual areas of diversity, including (but not limited to) age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, language, national origin, race, religion, culture, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status.

Acceptance decisions are based on outstanding undergraduate and (where applicable) graduate academic performance, evidence of scholarly activity such as publications and paper presentations, prior work experience, the personal statement, and letters of recommendation. 

The deadline for application for admission to the PhD program is December 15, 2023.

NOTE: The FDU application fee for the 2023-2024 application cycle has been waived.

This application should be used only to apply for the PhD in Clinical Psychology. Your application to the PhD program will not be considered complete unless you submit the following through PSYCAS:

• all official undergraduate and graduate transcripts,
• three letters of recommendation,
• a personal statement,
• official GRE aptitude and psychology test score reports. The psychology GRE is optional for those who majored in psychology as an undergraduate or attained an advanced degree in psychology.

Internship and dissertation

Students are required to apply for internship via the national match system offered by the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) and participate in an approved internship. The internship may begin after the student has completed the courses listed under the first six semesters, completed the second year research project, passed the comprehensive examinations, and successfully defended the dissertation proposal. Typically, the dissertation is completed in the fourth year and the internship in the fifth year.

Evaluations

Ongoing annual evaluations of students will be conducted by the faculty using information submitted by practicum site supervisors, course instructors, and research mentors. Students will meet with the Program Director to receive feedback concerning these evaluations.

Research practicum

All first-, second- and third-year students participate in a research practicum of ongoing projects supervised by doctoral faculty members. The practicum requires approximately 8-10 hours a week. Research projects frequently culminate in the publication of articles in psychological journals and paper and poster presentations at various professional meetings, with students in the doctoral program participating as authors and presenters.

Forensic Track

An optional add-on forensic track is available to students in the Ph.D. program who fulfill the following additional requirements:

• Completion of at least one of the required clinical practicums at any point after the first year. This requirement can be satisfied through an NYNJDOT approved externship or similar placement meeting requirements of the track.
• Completion of at least two additional courses: PSYC7230 Forensic Assessment and Prediction and PSYC7235 Evaluating Criminal Responsibility and Competency.
• Completion of a dissertation on a forensic topic.

It should be noted that research opportunities in forensic psychology are available.

Forensic track courses may incur additional fees if they increase a student’s credit load for a given semester above the allowable flat fee level of 16.5 credits.

Students coming into the program without a Master’s degree may incur additional fees for the two courses mentioned above since they are above and beyond the required courses for the clinical doctoral program.

Completion of the forensic track will be noted on the student’s transcript.

“You are in a position to help individuals and our larger society. Along with providing direct treatment, you have credentials that allow you to advocate for systematic changes. You can advocate in a variety of ways, such as through assessments, creating community-based programs, and activism in legal arenas.”

“If I chose to do a master’s program, I don’t believe I would have had as many opportunities, and master’s-level clinicians tend to not make as much as doctorate-level clinicians/providers.”

Q: Why did you choose to earn a Psy.D. instead of a Ph.D. in psychology?

“I chose a Psy.D. program as opposed to a Ph.D. as my program really emphasizes putting what we learn in classes to practice in our practicum sites. I also did not want to attend a program so heavily focused on research.”

“I didn’t just look at program types, but also at the faculty I wanted to work with. Both types of programs can offer similar training experiences, but having the right mentor whose research or interests aligns with yours is a key part of a successful graduate school experience.”

Q: What is something that surprised you about your psychology program or the field of psychology?

“How much we don’t know! While the field is improving on its ability to replicate research and evaluate treatment effectiveness, we don’t fully understand how and why individuals react, or don’t react, to popular interventions.”

“As a trainee, I was shocked to see what goes into being a great practitioner and having only a fraction of the work put in get rewarded. This is a selfless job and career, and the needs of those we help must always be a priority.”

Q: What is your biggest piece of advice to those who want to become psychologists?

“Listen to the people who come to you for assistance and be mindful of social and political influences on mental wellness. Many individuals will not benefit from standardized interventions, particularly those from historically oppressed communities. We need to listen when people tell us what is, or is not, working for them and be open to other ways of healing.”

“Impostor syndrome is REAL! There will be many times in your training that you feel like you don’t belong or that you’re not as good as those around you, but this is not true! You belong in this field and are just as good as anyone around you — just don’t forget the reasons why you’re here!”

Second, set yourself up for success. These programs are a major, major commitment. If you’re like me and completed your doctorate while working and raising a family, your time will be stretched very thin. Plan accordingly. For some of us, that means waiting for the timing to be right (whether that’s kids growing a little older or saving money first); for others, that means identifying what you need to keep in your life because it makes you feel like a balanced person, and what can wait for your degree to be complete before you pick it up again. These programs will require sacrifice on our part—allow yourself to be the one who chooses what the sacrifice will look like because you’ve planned for it.

Types of Doctoral Programs in Counseling and Psychology

When it comes to doctoral degrees, there are several programs in counseling. Aspiring psychologists searching for PhD programs should know there are two accrediting organizations. The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) accredits master’s and doctoral degrees in counseling, and the American Psychological Association (APA) accredits doctoral, internship, and postdoctoral residency programs in psychology. 

To choose the best program, applicants are advised to consider their future career goals and interests. In general, PhD programs in counseling prepare graduates to focus on patient adjustment issues such as anxiety, depression, couples counseling, behavior disorders, and substance abuse. By comparison, PhD programs in psychology may also see patients or specialize in clinical research and administer psychological assessments measuring intelligence, emotional relation, or neurological capabilities.  

Here are two lists of PhD programs in counseling and psychology included in CACREP- and APA-accredited programs.

CACREP-accredited PhD Programs in Counseling

• EdD in Counselor Education and Supervision : This is a practical degree program focusing on applying solutions to mental health problems from an administrative or teaching role; a clinical internship may not be required.
• PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision : This is designed for those who want to work in theoretical, clinical, teaching, and leadership roles; a clinical internship is typically required.

It is worth noting that as of 2013, new university teaching faculty members in CACREP-accredited programs must have a doctoral degree from a CACREP-accredited program to be eligible for employment. Additionally, licensure requirements vary by position and state requirements, and earning a doctoral degree from a CACREP-accredited program prepares candidates for the National Counselor Examination for Licensure and Certification (NCE) to become a licensed counselor. 

APA-accredited PhD Programs in Psychology

• PhD in Counseling Psychology : This is a foundational degree that leads to various positions seeing patients in clinical practices, research, teaching, and supervisory roles in private or public healthcare facilities.
• PhD in Psychology : This is a general degree program that can be broad or specific in its focus and includes clinical and research components; a one-year internship may be required.
• PhD in School Psychology : This school counseling degree program prepares future school psychologists to work with youth and behavioral issues that interfere with learning and socialization.
• PsyD in Counseling Psychology : Students in PsyD programs focus on client interaction, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment and learn practical applications of research-based psychology practices; a one-year internship may be required.

Online Counseling and Psychology Doctoral Program Accreditation

As mentioned above, master’s and doctoral counseling degree programs are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). There are more than 900 CACREP-accredited programs in the United States. Programs demonstrate their academic rigor through a two-part process of self and peer assessment and must prove that their mission, curriculum, and teaching meet high standards of excellence. 

In addition, the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) recognizes CACREP as an accrediting body, and nine of the 86 CACREP-accredited PhD programs in counseling are offered through online programs. 

As for psychology, the American Psychological Association (APA) currently does not accredit any online doctoral programs. Therefore, the APA urges students wishing to pursue an online doctoral degree in psychology to seek online PhD programs in psychology that hold regional or national accreditation through the U.S. Department of Education or an accrediting body approved by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). 

Typical Admissions Requirements for Doctoral Programs in Counseling and Psychology

Each doctoral program has its own unique admissions requirements. Here are some standard admissions requirements for online doctoral degree programs in counseling and psychology: 

• A master’s degree from a CACREP-accredited counseling program or a master’s degree from an accredited psychology program 
• Criminal background check
• Current license or be eligible to apply for licensure in the state of residence 
• GPA of 3.0 or higher from master’s degree program
• GRE scores 
• Interview with an admissions committee
• Letters of reference
• Official transcripts for undergraduate and graduate coursework
• Previous clinical experience in counseling or psychology 
• Statement of career or research goals

Supervised Clinical Hour Requirements – Doctoral Programs in Counseling and Psychology

Counseling programs accredited by CACREP include a supervised clinical hours component to prepare students to work one-on-one with patients. CACREP requires students to complete skill development preparation before being eligible for supervised clinical experience. 

A minimum of 700 hours of supervised experience is required, and hours are divided into two categories: practicum and internship. Practicum hours must total 100, and at least 40 of those hours must be in direct service with clients. 

As for internship hours, the minimum requirement is 600 hours, of which students must spend 240 in direct service with clients. CACREP defines direct service hours as ”the supervised use of counseling, consultation, or related professional skills with actual clients (can be individuals, couples, families, or groups) to foster social, cognitive, behavioral, and affective change.” The organization does not count tasks in administration and observation as direct service hours.

As for APA-accredited doctoral programs in psychology, students are encouraged to keep well-documented records of their supervised clinical hours. Depending on the state where licensure is sought, a psychologist must earn 1,500 to 6,000 supervised clinical hours. 

Licensure requirements vary by state, and students are advised to carefully research the number of supervised hours required for each state listed on the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB) website.

Adams State University

Adams State University offers an online PhD in counselor education and supervision program. Accredited by CACREP in 2017, this program requires four one-week summer residencies. This program’s mission is to position counseling professionals in a diverse range of counseling positions and advance the knowledge base through scholarly inquiry. 

With a PhD in this field, graduates can find work as counselor educators, supervisors, researchers in academic settings. Students must write a dissertation or a comparable research project related to counseling or counselor education and supervision to complete the doctoral program.

Amridge University (Hybrid)

This program isn’t designed to meet state counseling licensure requirements but is open for licensed counselors and non-licensed counselors to pursue. 

This doctoral program is designed for pastors, licensed counselors, marriage and family therapists, and clinical social workers who want to incorporate biblical counseling skills into their work. Graduates from this program complete a dissertation and benefit from a practice-focused degree program solving real-world problems with advanced research.

Oregon State University (Hybrid) 

Located in Corvallis, Oregon, the College of Education at Oregon State University offers a hybrid PhD program in counseling. Students in this program are members of a multi-state cohort that has included participants from western states Oregon, Washington, California, Hawaii, and Alaska. The in-person classes take place on weekends twice each quarter in Portland, Oregon, making the courses accessible for students traveling from outside the area to attend these courses. 

This part-time program aims to develop a specialized area of professional counseling and requires a dissertation and an internship. For more than 50 years, Shippensburg University has offered master’s-level counseling programs and currently provides a part-time EdD in counselor education and supervision. What does it mean when a program is not accredited.

Accreditation is a voluntary process, as programs choose whether and when to apply for initial accreditation. The Commission on Accreditation (CoA) has no basis for evaluating programs that have not applied. View the current list of applicant programs for initial accreditation.

When accreditation is denied or revoked, that means that the program has been deemed inconsistent with the Standards of Accreditation in Health Service Psychology (SoA). When the CoA denies or revokes accreditation, those programs are publicly listed as such .

What if I want to study psychology at the undergraduate or master’s level?

The APA Commission on Accreditation only accredits programs at the doctoral level. There are no APA-accredited bachelor’s or master’s programs.

Are programs outside the United States accredited?

Currently, the accrediting authority of the Commission on Accreditation (CoA) extends to programs in the United States and its territories.  The CoA currently accredits several programs in Puerto Rico. In order to be eligible for accreditation by the APA, doctoral programs must be sponsored by an institution of higher education accredited by a nationally recognized regional accrediting body in the United States.

As of Sept. 1, 2015 the APA CoA no longer accredits programs in Canada, in accordance with the revised agreement between the APA and the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA). Accreditation of programs in Canada are handled solely by the CPA. This agreement follows several years of discussion and surveys, a six-month period of public comment in 2004-2005, and approval by the APA Council of Representatives in 2007.

The CoA does not evaluate foreign degrees. Please contact the appropriate state licensing body for more information on this issue.

Will I have trouble getting a job or becoming licensed if I don't go to an accredited program?

This depends on your own career objectives and the law in the state(s) in which you wish to practice. In the United States, each state makes its own laws regarding the educational requirements for licensure of psychologists. If you wish to pursue licensure, it is important to know that some states require that students have a degree from an APA-accredited program. Which are the best psychology programs? How can I decide which psychology program to attend?

The Commission on Accreditation (CoA) accredits psychology programs; it does not provide qualitative information about programs, nor does it compare or "rank" them. The decision about what program is "best" is up to the individual student.

The CoA encourages students to look for a program that meets both their professional and personal goals. Ask practical questions such as: Does the program offer the type of training I want? Can I live here? Is it affordable? Is the institution too big/small? Does the program appear to have a faculty and staff with whom I can work? Talk to the faculty, students, and alumni about your questions, concerns and about your specific interests.

You can also ask programs about their outcomes, such as the types of jobs their graduates obtain. All APA-accredited programs are required to provide prospective students/trainees with data (See Implementing Regulations C-26 D, C-27 I, and C-23 P for details).

How can I verify which programs are accredited?

This listing is for informational purposes only and should not be used for official credential review, as it does not include a full historical record.

This website also provides a current list of programs applying for initial accreditation in order to allow for third-party comment. Please contact programs directly to find out whether they have plans to apply for accreditation in the future.

Are there any accredited programs that are offered online?

At this time there are no APA-accredited programs available that ONLY use online methods of instruction. Some programs may offer courses online, or utilize some nontraditional/distance education methods, but the Commission on Accreditation (CoA) does not maintain information on the courses offered, the modality of such courses or which programs might be offering them. All accredited programs must meet all provisions of the Standards of Accreditation (SoA), regardless of the methods of instruction they may use.

When can I say I am a graduate of an accredited program?

The initial date of accreditation (for applicant programs that become accredited) will be the final day of the site visit preceding the CoA's final accreditation decision.

Students who are in the program on that date and subsequently complete the program are considered to be graduates of an accredited program, provided, of course, that the program maintains an accredited status through the date of the students' graduation. Accreditation is not retroactive.

The time it takes to complete a doctoral program online varies widely by university. For some universities, 3-year PhD programs are the norm. The official timeline on most university websites is about 3 – 5 years to complete a doctoral degree, but that’s just a general guideline.

If you are looking for the shortest PhD programs, you’ll want to select a program that does not require a dissertation. Dissertations are notorious for taking 2+ years to complete beyond the actual course requirements.

The following doctoral programs do not always require a dissertation: EdD, PsyD, DBA, DPA, and similar professional degrees. Most PhD programs require a dissertation (which means they’ll take longer to complete).

Another way to speed up your degree is by enrolling at a university that offers accelerated (8-week) doctoral courses. Since the courses take half the time to complete, you can finish your studies in less time.

Finally, you’ll want to pick a program that requires fewer credit hours. For example, one university may require 64 credit hours for an EdD while another may only require 42 credits. When looking for the shortest doctorate programs, you’ll want to examine the credit hour requirements closely.

This is also a great way to find the cheapest online doctoral programs. Generally, you’ll pay less tuition if you don’t need as many credit hours for program completion.

Are There Any One-Year Online Doctoral Programs?

When exploring the fastest route to a doctorate, it’s important to understand the available options and their typical timelines.

While some fast track schools offer the possibility of finishing a professional doctorate in 12 to 18 months, most accredited universities generally promote their doctorate programs as taking 3 or more years to complete.

These are some things to consider when looking for a faster doctoral program:

• Standard PhD duration : The usual time frame for completing a PhD is about 3 to 5 years. Occasionally, you might come across a 2-year PhD program, but these programs are quite rare.
• Other career-focused doctorates
• Select an online program with fewer credit hours required.

• Consider no-dissertation programs
• Look for programs that don’t require a GRE for admission.

Artificial intelligence and data analytics are revolutionizing education — from traditional K–12 classrooms to advanced research labs — and Penn GSE’s Learning Analytics online M.S.Ed. program is perfectly timed to meet this growing demand. The program equips aspiring data scientists and educators with the skills to significantly impact various educational sectors, including schools, educational technology, and policymaking. 

The Learning Analytics program is designed for part-time and full-time students to develop measurement, analysis, and predictive modeling expertise. Students will also master advanced technologies such as generative AI, machine learning, and intelligent instruction and tutoring. 

Penn GSE Professor Ryan Baker , who also serves as the Penn Center for Learning Analytics director, says the program offers wide applications across the education sector. For instance, predictive analytics can help schools and districts identify students at risk for dropping out, enabling timely interventions. An ed-tech company can also use learning analytics to develop adaptive learning programs that tailor content to individual students’ needs, or a university can deploy data to analyze its curriculum resources. 

“Our goal is to get people with methodological tools, and also [with] the understanding of how to do … the real work in ways that are fair and don’t promote bias and don’t violate privacy,” Baker said. “There are a ton of potential applications.” 

With entry points in both the fall and spring, the program allows students to tailor their studies to fit their schedules, enabling them to apply their knowledge in their current roles immediately. 

The program enrolled 23 students in its first year, and a second-year cohort started in August. Students tune in from across the U.S., East Asia, and Europe. 

Baker said most students have worked in education in schools, policy, or government and want to burnish their data and contemporary analytics skills. They don’t need a computer science degree to participate, although Python, a high-level programming language, is necessary. 

Next year, the program will be named “Learning Analytics and Artificial Intelligence” and expand the focus on generative AI. 

Baker said Penn GSE’s program is a lab for new technologies. Students use intelligent tutor-based assignments, video discussion tools, and an AI assistant called JeepyTA that answers questions and gives real-time feedback as they work through ideas and assignments. There’s even a video discussion tool where students have conversations moderated by a video version of Baker. 

Baker said the program’s strengths are innovation and research. 

“The capacity of our faculty is outstanding, and we’re also very pedagogically experimental,” Baker said. “We’re not just doing lectures and programming assignments. We aren’t just teaching about learning analytics and artificial intelligence in education; we are actually using them to improve the program.” 

Learning Analytics students say their cohorts are tight-knit, and Penn GSE professors are accessible and supportive. 

“The program may be online, but the experience has been personal,” said Cesar Flores. 

Flores didn’t set out to work in education or technology. After college, he joined the family grocery business. He worked for a grocery brokerage firm, where he experimented with a new data analytics program and quickly became a one-person analytics department. 

Intrigued, Flores returned to school for a master’s in applied data sciences and worked as an adjunct professor in data analytics at Lone Star College. After joining a Dallas-based educational nonprofit, he applied to Penn GSE’s program to combine his passions for technology and education and use data to advance education. 

“I see technology as a tool that can help close the educational learning gap between students in economically disadvantaged communities and those who do not come from such communities,” Flores said. 

Students from across the Penn community can take individual courses. Mariana Riestra enrolled in Baker’s Big Data, Education, and Society class to complement her International Educational Development program and her job in alumni relations at Penn GSE. 

“Learning analytics plays an important role in maintaining a student-centered approach toward education through measuring learning growth and outcomes,” Riestra said. 

Another student, Lemar White, attends classes from Maryland, where he works for Google as the head of inclusive learning and development. White holds an MBA from Texas A&M University-Commerce and an Ed.D. from Northeastern University. He enrolled in Penn GSE’s program to burnish his data science expertise. 

“I wanted to gain the knowledge and skill set to use data effectively to make decisions about future learning experiences and learning design for Googlers,” White said. 

For his part, Baker envisions the program growing to hundreds of students learning data analytics and advanced methods for the greater good of education. 

“I want to expand the pool of people using these methods well to impact kids and adult learners,” Baker said.

Clinical Skill Development & Practicum

• You will gain practical experience beginning your first semester in our clinical psychology degree as you meet with Vanguard University undergraduate volunteers and practice the clinical skills you’re learning in class. This applied experience will prepare you for your practicum placements and help you grow as a clinician.
• You will complete supervised field experience at your practicum placement and begin earning hours towards licensure.
• Required personal therapy will give you the opportunity to be engaged in the therapeutic process as a client.

Accreditation/Program Approval

Our degree fulfills all academic requirements that are set forth by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences for licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) (Business and Professions Code of California Section 4980.36). The program also offers additional coursework for students interested in dual licensure as both an MFT and a Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC). With this additional coursework, the degree also fulfills all academic requirements that are set forth by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences for both licenses (Business and Professions Code of California Section 4980.36 and 4999.33). Our on-campus program offers 16-week courses on our Santa Ana Campus. Learning in person provides ongoing interaction with your faculty and classmates, and allows for spontaneous discussions, meals together, and making connections in between classes.

Clinical foundations i.

Clinical and theoretical foundations of the field of clinical psychology are presented with an emphasis on Client-Centered therapy and the development of beginning level skills. Course includes  supervised experience which will be used in assessing eligibility for trainee status.

Psychodynamic Theory and Treatment

A study of the theories and processes of therapy based on the psychodynamic modality. Emphasis is placed on understanding a client's internal dynamics. Required Supporting Materials

Applicants for the MS in Clinical Psychology  should also submit the following:

• References: (3) letters of recommendation from people who can speak about various aspects of your suitability, such as academic ability (professor), professional performance (i.e. work performance), clinical/leadership/relationship ability, or other relevant experience. The recommender cannot be a family member or friend.
• Personal Statement (750 words): Provide a detailed statement describing your significant life experiences and how they have lead you to pursue a degree in Clinical Psychology. In addition, discuss your future plans and professional goals as a result of obtaining this degree.
• Resume/Curriculum Vitae: Provide a detailed resume or curriculum vitae listing all employment, experience, education, training, etc.

Admissions Requirements - International Applicants

To apply for a degree program at Vanguard, the following requirements must be fulfilled in addition to meeting the domestic applicant and any program-specific admission requirements specified above.

• Evalution of Official Transcript(s):  All transcripts reflecting prior coursework must be submitted. Transcripts must be evaluated, not just translated, by an official agency.
• Official TOEFL ( Test of English as a Foreign Language ) Scores:  The minimum TOEFL score requirement is 80 on the web version. If English is the primary spoken language and medium of instruction at the institution(s) attended and at least two years of full-time study occurred at such institution(s), the TOEFL may be waived.
• Affidavit of Financial Support: If supported by personal and/or family funds, submit this form with an original bank statement in U.S. currency reflecting bank balance availability of the total amount listed below. If sponsored by a government or other official agency, an official letter stating that the funding and/or scholarship is valid for use at Vanguard University must be submitted. Please contact [email protected] to obtain the Affidavit of Financial Support.
• Copy of Valid Passport
• Students applying within the U.S. must submit copies of their visa , I-94 , and if on a student visa, copies of their I-20 A-B Form .

All materials must be received in the Admissions Office by the appropriate deadline:

• Fall semester - June 1  |  Spring semester - October 1

International students must be enrolled full-time within their program. For information on specific unit requirements, please contact the Graduate & Professional Education Office at [email protected] . International students are not eligible for any financial aid with the exception of institutional talent scholarships.

Scholarships

Vanguard University offers graduate academic scholarships for the biotechnology, clinical psychology, education, leadership studies, organizational psychology, and theology programs. These 10-15% tuition scholarships are based on cumulative undergraduate GPA calculations.  You will automatically be awarded a scholarship if you qualify. Vanguard University also offers a colleague discount for the MSN and post graduate certificate programs and the Ministry Grant for applicants working full time in ministry as ordained or licensed ministers or missionaries. Please ask your admissions counselor for more information.

Financial Aid

Financial aid is offered through the FAFSA application. Please see the  Financial Aid  page for further information and talk to your admissions counselor. 

Once an applicant’s file is complete, with all required items submitted, the file is forwarded to the department for review and potential admissions interview invitation.

From there, the Office of Graduate & Professional Education will inform the applicant of their admissions decision via email with a) a program acceptance to the university, or b) a program denial with recommendations for improving their file for potential resubmission.

List of APA-accredited programs

We are excited to announce that starting this year the Commission on Accreditation (CoA) and the Office of Program Consultation and Accreditation (OPCA) will begin publishing archival lists of accredited programs digitally. These lists were formerly published in the American Psychologist . A separate list will be available annually for doctoral programs, doctoral internships, and postdoctoral residencies, each of which will include programs with fully-accredited, “accredited, on contingency”, “accredited, on probation”, “accredited, inactive”, and withdrawn statuses. The lists for 2018 and those published afterwards will be available on the commission’s webpages . Members of the public with questions about these lists should email us .
